In order to infer the attainment of the signs of non-retrogression, through possessing two stable realizations of skillful means and wisdom, namely, the special verbal expressions that unerringly show the great path together with its fruits, and the special bodily expressions such as the hair of the body standing on end and tears flowing from the eyes upon seeing other sentient beings tormented by suffering. In order to separately explain the signs of non-retrogression, there are three: the explanation of the signs of non-retrogression for those on the path of union, those on the path of seeing, and those on the path of meditation. The first exists, namely, "Signs of turning away from form, etc." These four lines briefly indicate the signs. In order to explain in detail the twenty signs from "turning away from form, etc." to "not turning away from complete enlightenment." What are the twenty? They exist, namely, from turning away in various ways from the manifestation of true phenomena from form, etc., to the eleven signs of abiding in warmth between clean clothes, etc.; from not arising worms in the body, to the six signs of abiding at the peak between seeking to go to hell for the benefit of others; the two signs of patience in recognizing that the demon who shows the non-path as the path is called a demon, and one sign of abiding in the most excellent position of the Dharma called the actions of the three doors are the actions that please the Buddha, there are twenty in total. The second exists, namely, "Patience on the path of seeing, etc." etc. briefly indicate the signs, from "turning away from the perception of form, etc." to "giving up life for the sake of the Dharma," in order to explain in detail the sixteen signs. What are the sixteen? They exist, namely, the special expressions of body and speech of the seer of the path of seeing with the name of sixteen moments of knowledge and patience, from turning away from the imputed perception of truth in form, etc., to being able to give up one's own life for the sake of obtaining special Dharma, there are sixteen in total. The special expressions of body and speech brought about by the sixteen moments of knowledge and patience of the path of seeing are the signs of non-retrogression, but the sixteen moments of knowledge and patience themselves are not the signs of non-retrogression, because these sixteen cannot be reliably determined by ordinary beings, and therefore cannot be used as signs to infer other natures. The third is, the path of meditation.
