Or are there five separate ones? Or, just as I am one, the five aggregates also become one. The third objection is that, in general, it is just 'I'. Although arising and ceasing are not contradictory, the 'I' as grasped by the clinging to 'I', if it arises and ceases, then the self-established arising and ceasing has occurred, so in that state of 'I', the moments before and after arising and ceasing, are they one or different? If one, it is unreasonable, as the 'I' of past and future lives in this life also, would indivisibly transform into one, and the six realms of beings would have a common basis, hence it is a fault. If different, in general, it is just the 'I' and the aggregates. Although they are different, if that very 'I' is considered different from all those parts, it becomes an independent, unrelated difference, so if that is the case, the previous birth becoming memorable, existence itself is not reasonable. Furthermore, one would encounter uncreated karma, and what has been done would be wasted, because the truly established 'I' accumulated karma, and another such 'I' wants to experience the result, because of that reason, it pervades, and if the truly established cessation exists, then it is not reasonable for there to be a later birth. Therefore, I repeatedly contemplate that such an 'I' is not established as one on top of the five aggregates. Fourth, the way to ascertain the truth of aggregation and separation is: If it is not one with the aggregates, is it considered different? It is not reasonable, for then it would be self-established, and having become different, it becomes an unrelated difference, like a pillar and a vase. On one side, having separately eliminated the five aggregates, that 'I' must independently exist to be seen, but it is not seen to exist, On the collection of aggregates, one thinks, "It is I." The thought arises, and at the time of the arising and ceasing of the aggregates, I also posit arising and ceasing. That is also because seeing the aggregates is seeing 'I', and when the aggregates are sick, I also say, "I am sick," the term used is perfectly reasonable. Therefore, other than the basis of designation, the aggregates, I think there is no independent 'I'. Furthermore, the mode of reasoning is as follows: For example, when darkness falls on a rope, at the time when the thought of it being a snake arises, on that, the snake is merely imputed by the mind, except for the individual parts of the collection of ropes, no snake exists, like that, on the collection of aggregates, the darkness of ignorance falls.

The mind that mistakes self as real, when it arises, it is just an imputation on the aggregates. Other than the collection and continuity of the aggregates, and the individual parts not being self, there is also no other different self. Therefore, one should think that there is no self that can be independent. Furthermore, as stated in the Ratnavali: The person is not earth, not water, not fire element, not wind, not space, not consciousness, not just an accumulation, nor a different entity from the aggregates. As stated in the sutra, it is not one with the aggregates, nor is it different in nature from the aggregates, like a tree on a mountain as the support of the aggregates, and not like a tiger in a forest relying on the aggregates. Not like one's own wealth being different in nature, nor like the ear being the same in nature, it is not truly existent, the collection and shape of the aggregates are also not a reasonable basis for self, for example, just as a chariot on its own limbs, if searched with the sevenfold reasoning, cannot be found. Thus, through examination, when it is certain that the self grasped by the innate self-grasping does not exist, it is said to have attained the view of Madhyamaka. When practicing the selflessness of phenomena, although there are many rational ways, in short, it is the self-grasping that arises towards one's own body, thinking that this body is not merely imputed on the collection of limbs that serve as the basis of imputation, but rather thinking that on the five aggregates, the body is established like a solid whole, and grasping according to the way it appears, this is the way of grasping that the self is truly established. Is such a body on the five aggregates one or different? If it is one, it is unreasonable, because the body and the limbs become undifferentiatedly one, the past, present, and future bodies, and all the limbs will also become one. Since the possessor of limbs and the limbs become one, the part and the whole, the seer and the seen, the cutter and the cut will also become one. If the agent and the action become one, then it is never reasonable. If one thinks that it is not one with the collection of limbs, but one with each individual limb, then just as there are five limbs, the body will also become five parts, or just as the body is one, the five limbs will also become one. Therefore, one should not think that it is established as one. If one thinks that it is established as different from the various limbs, then generally the body itself and the limbs are merely different in name, but that self-grasping
