Although having (the vows) is also considered discipline, those who are not like that, even if they have the seed of discipline in their continuum, it is not discipline. The discipline of a monk is the nature of abandoning seven things, namely the three of body and the four of speech. The discipline of a novice is endowed with four abandonments, because they have not actually promised to abandon frivolous talk, harsh words, and divisive speech, as it is said. Secondly, if classified, there are eight types: Upavāsa (close dwelling), male and female lay devotees, male and female novices, female probationary monks, nuns, and monks. Thus, the eight types of individual liberation are proclaimed. Among the eight, the first three, Upavāsa and the vows of male and female lay devotees, are the vows of the householder's side. The other five vows, such as those of male and female novices, are the vows of the renunciate's side. The first three are the householder's vows, and the last five are the renunciate's vows. Thus it is said. The meaning of "side" is: in order to prevent the lay devotee's vow in the continuum of a monk who has taken the three vows in sequence from being a true householder's vow. The meaning of the term "individual liberation" is: the protector individually liberates from samsara, or first liberates from non-discipline. The meaning of the term "discipline" is the meaning of restraining from misdeeds. Thirdly, there are six types of individual recognition, the first of which is Upavāsa: The four root and four branch vows, abandoning eight is the Upavāsa vow. After briefly indicating this, the detailed explanation is: non-celibacy and not giving, killing and lying, etc., are the four root vows, high and large beds, drinking alcohol, dancing, etc., garlands, etc., and food after noon are the four branch vows. Thus it is said. The second is the lay devotee: abandoning the five of killing, stealing, lying, and sexual misconduct, and drinking intoxicants, is the lay devotee's vow. Thus, after showing what is to be abandoned by a complete lay devotee, if we distinguish lay devotees by name and category, there are six types: practicing a part, some, mostly, practicing completely, practicing celibacy, and the six types of refuge-taking lay devotees. Thus it is said. The Kashmiri believes that except for the two, complete and celibate, the others are not true lay devotees, while the Lower Sun and the Sutra School both believe that those are true lay devotees, but have the lay devotee's vow.
