Because of "not existing by nature," this indicates that it is not established by its own nature; because of "not being completely non-existent," this indicates existence in name; because of "not existing by nature," this indicates that it is not established as truly existent, so the former eliminates the extreme of nihilism, and the latter eliminates the extreme of eternalism, thus preventing the two extremes of eternalism and nihilism. The main reason for being free from the two extremes of eternalism and nihilism is the reason of dependent origination, because the meaning of dependent origination is the meaning of relying on one's own parts, etc. Therefore, all phenomena depend on their respective parts, etc., and there is nothing that does not depend on parts, just like a flower in the sky. Although there are many kinds of reasoning that prevent the two extremes, the main one is the reasoning of dependent origination itself. As the venerable Chandrakirti said: "Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination cuts through all nets of evil views." Je Tsongkhapa himself also said: "By the reason of arising dependently, it does not rely on extreme views, this well-spoken word is the unsurpassed cause of your speech, O Protector." Therefore, the sign of dependent origination can eliminate the two extremes simultaneously. That is, dependent origination means arising dependently, being established dependently, or being interdependent. Because of "arising dependently," it actually prevents the extreme of nihilism. When understood as the existence of "arising dependently" or "being established dependently," it can also prevent the extreme of eternalism in a way that can actually prevent the extreme of complete non-existence, because of "arising dependently" or "being established dependently." When understood as "not being established by its own nature," it can well prevent the extreme of eternalism. If one can generate a view that prevents the two extremes on one phenomenon, then one can also generate such a view on other phenomena. As Aryadeva said: "Whoever is the seer of one, is said to be the seer of all. Whatever is the emptiness of one, is the emptiness of all." And "Whoever sees the suchness of one thing, also sees the suchness of all things." Therefore, understanding that all phenomena are merely imputed by conceptual thought can also eliminate the two extremes. If it exists merely as imputed by conceptual thought, then understanding it as existing in name eliminates the extreme of nihilism. If it exists in name, then knowing that it does not exist by its own nature can

It eliminates the extreme of permanence. This is done by preventing the two extremes of existence. It also eliminates the two views of permanence and annihilation regarding the existent. Generally, although there are no extremes of permanence and annihilation, the way to establish falling into extremes is: for example, in the world, falling off a cliff leads to destruction. Similarly, if one grasps those two extremes, the one who grasps will be destroyed, so it is established as falling into extremes. Moreover, merely having the mind that grasps inherent existence is not established as falling into the extreme of permanence, because even the noble ones of the Great Vehicle have the mind that grasps inherent existence. So, how is it established? If one is bound by the grasping of truth, then one has fallen into the extreme of permanence. The meaning of being bound is not merely having the grasping of truth, but when one thinks about any phenomenon, whether it is truly established or not, if one cannot transcend and is unable to transcend the clinging to the truth that grasps it as truly established, then one is established as being bound by it. Therefore, if one has experienced the absence of truth, then one is not bound by the grasping of truth. Similarly, falling into the extreme of annihilation is not established merely by grasping that something that exists does not exist, because, except for the Buddhas, let alone ordinary beings, even all the noble ones who are learning have not completely resolved their doubts about all the extremely subtle distinctions of all the phenomena that exist. Therefore, in general, viewing that there is no cause and effect, no Three Jewels, etc., is falling into the extreme of annihilation. Similarly, I think that viewing that there are no coarse suchness and coarse Four Noble Truths, etc., is the same. Although it is a fault to grasp that cause and effect and some subtle phenomena of suchness do not exist because one does not know that they exist, it is not appropriate to say that all individuals who have that lineage have fallen into the extreme of annihilation, so it should be examined. Some people think that generally, grasping that something exists is falling into the extreme of permanence, and grasping that something does not exist is falling into the extreme of annihilation, which is a great misunderstanding. How could one fall into permanence and annihilation by grasping that the Buddha has qualities and grasping that he has no faults? If something exists in the nature of some self-grasping cognitions, it does not need to exist generally, because a truly established pot, although it exists in the nature of the cognition that grasps it, does not exist generally. Similarly, the variegated rope being a snake, although it exists in the nature of the cognition that grasps the snake, does not exist generally. So, just as there is no snake on the variegated rope, all phenomena also
