Because it has the function of being able to ripen and liberate sentient beings. In short, there are five aspects of the path knowledge mentioned here: being free from manifest pride that is an obstacle to becoming that; generating the mind of enlightenment; being pervaded by the nature of the inherent lineage; the nature of not abandoning the main afflictions; and having the function of being able to ripen and liberate sentient beings. Secondly, it is divided into explaining the meaning of pervasiveness and explaining the nature. First, there is the meaning of pervasiveness here, as it says in the commentary: "Establishing the three vehicles is intentional, but not from the perspective of characteristics," according to this statement, all beings have the ultimate of unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, from "the very knowledge of the path should be meditated upon is pervasive." As it says, because the lineage of the Buddha pervades the minds of all sentient beings, it is pervasive because it is feasible to meditate on the path knowledge, and it is also pervasive because one can ultimately attain Buddhahood by relying on it, so all three types of pervasiveness are explained here. Even so, it is not contradictory to the sutras that ultimately teach the three vehicles, because it is explained as provisional meaning from the perspective of intention, necessity, and what harms reality. There is an intention, because it takes into account that there is a temporary certainty for each of the three lineages. There is a necessity, because it is to gradually guide some who initially want to enter the Mahayana. There is something that harms reality, because it is harmed by many scriptures and reasonings. The first point is established, because it is harmed by many scriptures such as the Lotus Sutra and the Garland Sutra. The way of harming by reasoning is that ultimately, one must gain certainty that the minds of all sentient beings are without inherent existence in the ultimate sense, and that defilements are temporary and abide in the mind stream in a separable way. The detailed explanation of these reasons should be understood as explained in the root and commentary of the Uttaratantra. In short, although all co-emergent dharmas exist nominally, if one examines and searches with the correct reasoning that analyzes the ultimate, one will not find the imputed meaning. Therefore, by realizing that the root of all other afflictions such as attachment, the belief in true existence, is a delusion about the object of attachment, one can achieve the ability to abandon it. That is also true.

Therefore, due to the certainty that clinging to the truth of afflictions as their root is mistaken, like mistaking a patterned rope for a snake. Therefore, one can be certain that all other afflictions arising from it are temporary. If one cultivates antidotes based on this, one can understand that all afflictions such as attachment can be abandoned. Ultimately, one will understand that one can attain Buddhahood by abandoning all obscurations. Moreover, this reasoning can also determine that although samsara has no beginning, it does have an end. As it says in the commentary on the Uttaratantra: Because there is a naturally pure lineage, it is not reasonable that anything should never become completely pure. Although it has no beginning, it has an end. Because self-nature is pure and has the nature of permanence. The beginningless sheath obscures and cannot be seen, just as the form of gold is obscured. As it says in the Catuhsataka: Just as one sees the end of a seed, but it does not have a beginning. And so on. Similarly, it appears in the Abhisamayalankara, the Pramanavarttika, and so on. These are only briefly mentioned here. For details, one should learn from other texts and from what I have already explained in the second chapter of the Perfection of Wisdom. Secondly, the reason why Bodhisattvas are said to be superior to the paths of Hearers and Solitary Realizers in terms of their nature, by not primarily abandoning afflictions, is that some afflictions are transformed into limbs for accomplishing the benefit of others. What are these afflictions? They exist. They are the desire of the desire realm. Bodhisattvas must transform some afflictions included in the form realm into limbs for accomplishing the benefit of others, and therefore do not abandon them as the primary object of abandonment. The reason is that Bodhisattvas, in order to take birth as a Chakravartin and accomplish the benefit of others by producing offspring, necessarily need the desire of the desire realm. And, in order to take birth in the form realm and accomplish their benefit, they transform the desire of the form realm into limbs. These are also based on common understanding. It is not necessary for Bodhisattvas to have desire in order to take birth and accomplish the benefit of others by producing offspring. Because Bodhisattvas who have obtained power over birth can abandon some afflictions and become Chakravartins.
