Thus it is said. Also, Maitreya says: The basis of the offering of wisdom is listening; therefore, listening is supreme. Thus it is said. The Protector Nagarjuna says: Even when white hair and wrinkles increase, one should accumulate listening. Wherever listening goes, the body will not go there. Thus it is said. In "Unraveling the Seven Ornaments," it says: Initially, with the wisdom of listening, listening arises in the continuum through words. Thus it is said. In "Meaningful Clarification," it says: Initially, by striving for the meaning of listening, whoever constantly perseveres, in that person's hand, accomplishments are well attained. Thus it is said. The Great Yogi says: When practicing the Buddhadharma, do not act like a book-mule; showing something the size of a palm, moving it slightly, one will not go anywhere. Thus it is said. Internalizing the instructions does not mean gaining certainty about a scripture the size of a palm; rather, it means understanding all the scriptures as instructions. Thus it is said. In the "Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path," it says: Listening and contemplation are very important for practicing meditation, as stated in the scriptures and their commentaries. Thus it is said. Also, from that, the more one listens, the more wisdom arises from it, and the more contemplation there is, and so on. For those who wish to practice the Dharma properly, the supreme cause for generating the wisdom that fully discriminates the Dharma, the life force of the path, is to listen extensively to the stainless scriptures and treatises. Thus it is said. Therefore, one must gain certainty that wisdom and listening as its cause are indispensable for practicing the Dharma. Thus it is said. Even if one does not understand from the beginning, one should not refrain from asking, but strive for whatever amount of listening, large or small, that suits one's intelligence. Thus it is said. One should rely on a worthy lama, serve and respect him in order, and seek listening in order to accomplish wisdom. Thus it is said, as it is said, one should rely on a wise person and listen according to one's ability. Without that, the wisdom arising from listening and the wisdom arising from contemplation will not arise. If that is the case, because one does not know what to meditate on, if one listens, by contemplating its meaning, the wisdom arising from contemplation will arise. From that, the wisdom arising from meditation will become vast. Thus it is said. Also, from that, listening must precede the wisdom arising from listening, and contemplation must precede the wisdom arising from contemplation.

Also, in the Great Treatise on the Stages of Secret Mantra, it says, "Whatever you do, whether practicing yourself or teaching others, you must first seek an unmistaken understanding through listening and thinking. Because if you don't know yourself, you can't teach others." And in the same treatise, quoting the five stages, it says, "The one who holds listening is a noble disciple." Furthermore, Je Rinpoche said, "To block the cliff of terrifying samsara, one relies on immaculate, vast learning." And so on, and "Through vast learning that finds the intention of the Able One," and so on, and prayers such as "With explanations aimed at all the Buddha's scriptures," and "There, having reached the end of vast learning," and so on, making prayers, etc. Even if it is established by the words of Je Rinpoche alone that one must listen extensively, it goes without saying that there is no need to look at others. Other scholars have also explained the reasons why one must listen extensively, but I have not written them here because I am concerned about the length. Second, refuting the arguments against this. Some say, "You have established with scripture that one must engage in listening, and it is true that listening is necessary when teaching, but vast listening is not necessary for practice." To think so is very unreasonable. Palden Drepung said, "One with little listening is like a blind person, not knowing how to meditate. Without it, what should one think about?" And in the Garland of Pearls, it says, "Without intelligence there is no listening, and without listening there is no thinking." And in the Commentary on the Compendium of Trainings, it says, "One who does not have listening does not know the method of meditation and the method of abandoning afflictions." And Sharawa said, "I think that listening should be continuous. To think that it is not necessary for meditators but necessary for speakers, there is a great danger of the speaker incurring sin. It is necessary only for meditators." And so on, because they said that listening is necessary for practice. To that, someone says, "One should listen extensively, but it is not necessary to form an understanding. Without that, it is enough to practice single-pointedly." That is also unreasonable. Because if an understanding is not well formed, even if one meditates for a long time, it will be of little use. Moreover, if the understanding is wrong, the practice will also become wrong. That is so, because in the Stages of the Path it says, "Without understanding the object, striving for a stubborn experience will not go anywhere, like a rudderless boat." And in the Stages of Secret Mantra it says, "If the understanding is wrong, the practice will be wrong,
