Now there is suspicion of theft. Abandoning the practice of the ten virtues, relying on words, power, wealth, and deception, one presumes to accomplish the benefit and happiness of beings. If that were the case, then the omniscient Shakya lord must be mistaken. What other certainty is there besides this? Furthermore, some say, if much learning is necessary, then, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "One should practice well with the body. What benefit is there in merely speaking words?" and so on. Also, Lord Atisha said, "This life is short, and the forms of knowledge are many," and so on. Also, in the biography of Lhodrak Chador, it is said, "One cannot attain Buddhahood through mere verbal Dharma," and so on. What does that mean? There is no fault. That is said with regard to those who are content with mere learning without practice, and those who are content with mere outward-looking explanations. However, the scriptures say that most of hearing and contemplation is practice. So, are you yourself engaging in hearing, contemplation, and meditation in that way? Otherwise, you should not say so. Although it is difficult for people like us to accomplish the three, hearing, contemplation, and meditation, as mentioned earlier, some may think that it is not necessary to seek much learning, and especially that it is not necessary to engage in common cultural knowledge. Therefore, in order to prevent the wrong views of those people, and in order to encourage some intelligent people to engage in hearing and contemplation, I have done this. If the wise see it, please do not take offense. It is said: This world and the world beyond, The basis for accomplishing special qualities, Is wisdom, and its cause is hearing, Therefore, one should strive to engage in it. Although one cannot attain Buddhahood by that alone, Among the two teachings, scriptural and realized, Hearing is necessary to enter the scriptural teaching, As it is said, hearing benefits the teaching. Hey! Householders and animals, Do not engage merely for the sake of food and clothing, like their behavior, Follow the holy ones, strive in hearing, contemplation, and meditation. Why? Because the purpose of the ordained is not that, but to accomplish enlightenment. That method, in the teachings of scripture and realization, Is accomplished through hearing, contemplation, and meditation, not otherwise. Those who are not interested in general hearing, and especially In common cultural knowledge, And directly say that it is not necessary

Ah! Is that person abandoning the sacred Dharma? However, merely hearing is not enough; after hearing, one should practice accordingly. If one teaches in this way, that is the good saying of the noble ones. No one can say that this is unreasonable. Even if one is slightly familiar with the way of hearing, those clever and foolish people who act recklessly and rudely are like those with eyes who fall into a cliff. For them, what can even the Buddha do if he comes? If there is virtue arising from this effort, may it enable one to easily realize the Buddha's intention through much hearing of all scriptures and meanings, and through proper reflection! This article, entitled "The Whip that Drives Away the Elephant of Evil Speech and Encourages the Wise on the Path of Hearing," was personally written by the Shakya Bhikshu, named Shedrup, at Chone Monastery. Auspicious! The Whip that Encourages the Wise on the Path of Hearing.
