A Whip to Encourage the Wise on the Path of Learning. A Whip to Encourage the Wise on the Path of Learning. This is a treatise called "A Whip to Encourage the Wise on the Path of Learning." The warm and moist air of aspiration, long accustomed, In the center of the golden egg of the well-nurtured path, Well-born, with wings fully endowed with abandonment and realization, Incomparable Teacher, soaring in the sky, may you be victorious! Constantly relying on the force of diligent wind, The pair of wings connected to vast learning and discernment, Extending greatly, traversing the vast palace of profound meaning of many scriptures, The assembly of great Indian and Tibetan scholars are praised! Those who are not satisfied with a one-sided path, A few unbiased individuals who seek meaning through vast learning, Here, I will speak of a method to generate joy, Those who are impartial, lend an ear and listen! There are two aspects to this: establishing the necessity of seeking learning, and, Dispelling disputes about it. The first is: Although there are many foundations for the wise to engage in, The main ones are hearing, contemplation, and meditation, but proper contemplation and meditation depend on hearing. Therefore, it is certain that engaging in hearing is of utmost importance. If asked: By what scriptural authority is it established that hearing is of utmost importance? Answer: There are countless scriptural authorities that establish this, but here I will mention a few: The necessity of engaging in hearing is established by many scriptures, Such as in the Sutra of Four Dharmas: Shariputra, if one possesses four qualities, a Bodhisattva will be endowed with wisdom and quickly attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. What are the four? Shariputra, a Bodhisattva is one who has heard much, retains what he has heard, accumulates what he has heard, and is diligent in teaching the Dharma. Thus, seeking learning, and completely seeking learning in this way, if it increases the wisdom of the Dharma that is seen, then what need is there to mention the next life? That wisdom is also accomplished by diligently engaging in hearing. Shariputra, those who generate the mind of enlightenment for the sake of the enlightenment of the Buddhas, if they do not exert themselves greatly in vast learning, then it should be known that those Bodhisattvas are not speakers of truth. It also says: Wisdom arises from vast learning.
