This is the view and practice of the Heshang. Some say that meditating without making any affirmative or negative judgments about anything is meditating on reality, but this is also unreasonable. If that were the case, it would lead to there being no Buddhas, no sentient beings, and so on. Some say that if I cannot find the "I" inside or outside, above or below, or in the middle of the body, and then think that there is no "I" at all, and meditate on that, this is also unreasonable. Because this is a nihilistic view. The reason is that even if I cannot find the "I" when searching in that way, the "I" still exists. Some say that if the "I" cannot be apprehended as any color or shape, and then think that the "I" is not inherently existent and meditate on that, this is also unreasonable. Because the color and shape of the "I" do exist, it is unreasonable. Merely by realizing that the "I" is not a color or shape, one cannot realize that the "I" is without inherent existence. The reason for the latter point is that merely by realizing that the "I" is not form, one cannot realize that the "I" is without inherent existence. Some think that because the mind is not a color or shape, the mind is nothing at all, or they meditate thinking that the mind is not inherently existent, which is also unreasonable. Because the former is nihilism, and the latter is also somewhat unreasonable. The reason is that the mind is awareness, so it is very easy to ascertain that it is not a color or shape. By that alone, one cannot ascertain that the mind is without inherent existence. Furthermore, some think that the mind initially comes from nowhere, like coming out of a doghouse; in the middle, it does not abide anywhere, like a king sitting on a throne; and finally, it goes nowhere, like a mouse entering a hole; and having realized that it is without basis or root, they think that it is not inherently established and meditate on that. Saying that this is meditating on the reality of the mind is also somewhat unreasonable. Because this is a way of searching as if the mind were a physical object, even if one says that it is without inherent existence, one cannot draw a definite conclusion from it. The reason is that, in this way, even if one realizes that the mind is free from the three states of arising, ceasing, and abiding, like a physical object, one cannot realize that the mind is without inherent existence. If one could realize it, then all proponents of substantial existence would also be able to realize it. Furthermore, this is unreasonable because the three states of arising, ceasing, and abiding are inherent.

Because it is not the way to search in a way that is established as real, it is not correct. The reason is that the way to search is: one must examine that the mind does not newly arise with its own nature, nor does it remain with its own nature during its own time, and that at the time of its establishment, it does not cease with its own nature in the second moment. Some say: As soon as the mind arises, it arises as the nature of clarity, and if one examines and investigates that clarity, one cannot find any color or shape, so at the time of clarity it is emptiness, and at the time of emptiness it is clarity, so meditating on the inseparability of clarity and emptiness is meditating on the true nature. This is also not reasonable, because it is only seeing the conventional nature of the mind, so it is not meditating on the true nature. If that were the case, then merely being clear and aware would also become meditating on the true nature. Some say: When one stares at the nature of the thought that has just arisen before and after the moment, meditating on the thought going to its own object is meditating on the true nature. This is also not reasonable, because it is only thinking that the thoughts before and after the moment do not stay in their own second moment, but it is not seeing the meaning of the true nature. If that were the case, then even without seeing the moment, it would be enough to see the true nature. Some say: When one looks like that, seeing the emptiness of the thought naturally disappearing is seeing the true nature of the mind and the self-face of the Dharmakaya. This is also not reasonable, because it has been negated by the previous reasoning. Some say: When one places the mind in an unshakable state and then stares at the nature of the thought, the mind appears empty like the sky, and meditating on that itself is meditating on the true nature. This is also not reasonable, because it is seeing the mind free from the touch of obstacles, or it is seeing any situation where the mind does not stay in its own second moment, so it is not seeing the meaning of the true nature. Some say: It is not necessary to prevent the arising of conceptual thoughts, but rather to contemplate all arising thoughts as wisdom Dharmakaya, which is to transform all good and bad thoughts into the path, because samsara and nirvana do not go beyond conceptual thoughts, so all conceptual thoughts must be meditated on as equal in taste with the Dharmakaya. This is also not reasonable, because thoughts are not wisdom Dharmakaya, and the meaning of equal taste is also not reasonable. The reason is that if it is reasonable, then all good and bad would also be equally in taste.
