The characteristic of the Vaibhashika, who is a proponent of the Lesser Vehicle tenets that asserts things as truly existent with attachment. Secondly, because they follow the Great Commentary of the Vaibhasha and assert the distinctions of substances in the three times (past, present, and future), they are called Vaibhashikas. Thirdly, dividing them, from the perspective of essence, there are two: the Kashmir Vaibhashikas and the those beneath the sun Vaibhashikas. From the perspective of how they split, there are eighteen schools. Initially, the root schools are the Sarvastivadins, the Mahasanghikas, the Sthaviras, and the Sammitiyas, existing as four. The first split into seven, the second into five, the third into three, and the fourth also into three, thus splitting into eighteen. There are also many different views on this, but according to the teacher Dulva Lha, as it is said: "Light protector, Dharma protector, the much-hearing, red-robed are disciples, Distinguishing and all-foundational, the Sarvastivadins are seven. East, west, mountain, and snow mountain dwellers, asserting conditioned phenomena as permanent, The Lokottaravadins are the Mahasanghika school, the Jeta Grove dweller and the Fearless Dweller, The Great Monastery are the Sthaviras three, Earth Roar Mountain and the Protector, The Matrka-putra schools are, universally revered, the three kinds." As it is said. The differences between these can be known in detail from the Vinaya, etc., and it is also necessary to know that there is a difference between a person of the Lesser Vehicle and a proponent of the Lesser Vehicle tenets. Fourth, the tenets' views are threefold: the basis, the path, and the result. First, if these four are divided in detail, there are the five aggregates of form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness; the five faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body; the five sense objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and non-revealing forms, all of which are conditioned phenomena, and space and cessation, both of which are unconditioned phenomena. They assert eighteen dhatus: from the form dhatu to the dharma dhatu are the six object dhatus; from the eye dhatu to the mind dhatu are the six support dhatus; from the eye consciousness dhatu to the mind consciousness dhatu are the six consciousness dhatus, thus six times three is eighteen dhatus. They also assert twelve ayatanas: form, sound, etc., are the six object ayatanas; eye, etc., are the six faculty ayatanas, so they assert twelve ayatanas. That is, the aggregates

Because of accumulation, it is skandha; because it is the gate of birth, it is āyatana; because it is the category of dharma, it is called dhātu. Know that all knowable things are contained in the eighteen dhātus and twelve āyatanas. This much is commonly accepted by all higher tenets. Moreover, they accept the five realms, the four types of birth, etc. The difference is that this school believes that there are two kinds of things: permanent things and impermanent things. The former is like the function of space allowing the wind to rely on it, while the latter is easy to understand. Therefore, they believe that function and knowable things are the same thing. Regarding the classification of knowable things or things, there are two truths. If one separates the various parts through decomposition or wisdom, then the dharmas that can abandon self-grasping are all conventional truths. If we use an example to illustrate, such as a clay pot, when it is not broken, the thought "this is a pot" arises, but when it is broken, the thought "this is a pot" does not arise. Therefore, clay pots and the water inside them are conventional truths. As it is said in the Abhidharmakośa: If one decomposes or uses wisdom, other, separates, then that thought will not arise, like a pot of water, it is a conventional truth. If one separates the various parts through decomposition or wisdom, then the dharmas that cannot abandon self-grasping are all ultimate truths. The meaning can be understood by the opposite of the previous one. Examples are form and feeling, etc. In addition, there are indivisible atoms, indivisible moments of consciousness, and indivisible conditioned phenomena. Conventional and imputed have the same meaning, and ultimate truth and real existence have the same meaning. Believing that a person is independent and self-sufficient, the emptiness of real existence is the subtle aspect of the selflessness of the person. Although the Vātsīputrīyas do not consider this kind of emptiness to be the subtle selflessness of the person, they believe that emptiness of permanence, oneness, and independence is the subtle selflessness, and they do not accept the term "selflessness of phenomena." They acknowledge the continuum of aggregates, collections, and some consciousnesses as persons, and they acknowledge direct perception and inference as valid cognitions, but they consider the tangible sense faculties to be valid cognitions. It is said that this school and some Sautrāntikas do not deny the Mahāyāna sūtras, but some do acknowledge them. Second, the path has two aspects: what is to be abandoned and the path.
