It's like eating. Like hearing a good letter, opening a precious box. Just because the Dharma is spoken here, it also generates supreme joy. That is the meaning shown. As for distinguishing the middle and the extremes: Extreme refers to the view of existence or non-existence, or annihilation. Middle refers to the Middle Way, which abandons those views. Because it distinguishes these, it is called Distinguishing the Middle and the Extremes. That is, it is only the obscuration of characteristics. The antidote and the meditation, And obtaining its place and fruit, Is the unsurpassed vehicle. This is what is shown by the seven meanings. As for distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata: Dharma refers to the Dharma of samsara, which is completely defiled by afflictions. Dharmata refers to the Dharma of Nirvana, which transcends suffering, showing the distinction between these two. Therefore, it is called Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata. Uttaratantra is the lineage of the Great Vehicle, or the master of the continuously existing dharmas. Because it has become the foremost of the dharmas, it is called that. Or, uttara means later. Because it explains the later intention of the Great Vehicle lineage, it is called that. That is, it shows the Three Jewels, its realm, the fruit of Bodhi, the sixty-four qualities of the Buddha, and the seven aspects of activity. Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, realm, and Bodhi, And qualities, Buddha activity are the last. If the body of all treatises is summarized, Then these are the seven vajra places. Like that. On top of that, adding the Ornament of Clear Realization, are the five dharmas of Maitreya. Following that are the extensive treatises, the Five Grounds, composed by the noble Asanga, and the condensed treatises, the two Compendiums, and the eight sections of Prakaranas composed by Vasubandhu, and so on. Among them, the Five Grounds are like the root. The actual substance of the ground is shown by summarizing it into the seventeen grounds. The Compendium is: The ground possessing the five consciousnesses, The mind ground and the other three, With investigation and analysis, And with and without samadhi, With mind and without mind, Possessing hearing, thought, and meditation, Likewise possessing the three vehicles, With aggregates and without aggregates, others. Like that. Those seventeen are also shown by making them dependent on the basis, examination, and fruit. Among them, there are also three, namely, the ground possessing the five consciousnesses and the two mind grounds.

It is the nature of dependence. The ground of with investigation and with examination, without investigation but with examination, and without investigation and without examination. The three are the ways of entering into dependence. The ground of with or without equipoise, and with or without mind, the four are the states of dependence. From the perspective of practice, there are three grounds of hearing, thinking, and meditating. From the perspective of results, the temporary results are the Hearer ground, the Bodhisattva ground, and the Self-realized ground. The ultimate results are with remainder and without remainder. Like its explanation, it is gathered into ascertainment, showing that both the words and meanings of the ground's essence are ascertained by gathering them into the fourfold possibilities, etc. Except for the ground of the Self-realized Buddha, there is ascertainment by gathering. These two show the meaning of all the scriptures. Gathering the base refers to the way those previous treatises are gathered into the three baskets. In the summary here, it is said that all three baskets are gathered, but in the detailed explanation, only the gathering of the Sutra Pitaka and the Vinaya Pitaka are explained. Because gathering the Mother Collection is the five sections of the Grounds themselves, it is not explained separately. In the ascertainment and gathering of the Ground of Hearing, it says: The gathering of its Mother Collection is the seventeen grounds and the four gatherings. This is the reason for saying so. Gathering the categories refers to showing the categories of expressive names, or explaining in detail the categories of pervasive defilements and pure pervasions. These two are the treatises. Gathering the doors of explanation refers to showing the ways of explaining those. Thus, from the perspective of the meaning of the scriptures, the treatises, and the ways of explanation, there are the five sections of the Grounds. The two summaries, the common vehicle's summary, the Compendium of Abhidharma, is the collection of characteristics, as well as the Truth Distinctions, the Dharma Distinctions, the Attainment Distinctions, and the Discourse Distinctions, showing them by gathering them into five. The Great Vehicle's summary, the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, is showing the Great Vehicle by gathering it with ten meanings such as the place of knowable things. Vasubandhu's eight treatises are: The Thirty Verses, which show that all phenomena are only mind; The Twenty Verses, which establish it with reasoning; The Five Skandhas, which show that its basis, the five aggregates, is reasonable; The Explanation of Reasoning, which shows that speaking and listening are reasonable even though it is so; The Treatise on the Accomplishment of Action, which shows that the actions of the three doors are reasonable. These are the five treatises composed by himself. And the vast conduct such as the six perfections, the twelve links of dependent origination, and the three characteristics are reasonable.
