The Ornament of Sutras by the Teacher Vasubandhu, the Sutra on Dependent Arising, and the commentaries on the three treatises of Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, plus the three treatises with other commentaries, making a total of eight. It is said that this is how it is. Some say that this teacher composed many treatises such as the commentary on the Ten Bhumis Sutra, so the statement of eight treatises is not definite, and the number of twenty dharmas related to Maitreya is also not definite. Those who assert a definite number consider the five treatises on the Bhumis, the two treatises on the Vinaya, the five dharmas of Maitreya, and the eight treatises such as the Ornament of Clear Realization to be the definite number. The second is the Twenty Verses on the Vinaya and so on. Fifth, if we categorize the types of treatises, there are two types: those that do not rely on the words of the Buddha and those that do. Among those that do not rely on the words of the Buddha, there are two types: those that provide commentaries on the words of the Buddha themselves and those that compose the meaning of the Buddha's words as their own system. In the first type, there are those that extensively explain both the words and the meaning, such as the commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, which is an extensive commentary like the fifty-fascicle version; those that explain the parts of the words with elaboration, such as the commentary on the Jataka Tales, which is a commentary on the words; those that distinguish difficult-to-understand meanings, such as the Compendium of Topics and the Compendium of Explanations, which are commentaries on difficult points; those that summarize the main points of the meaning and explain them, such as the commentary on the Compendium of Meanings composed by Vimalamitra, which is a commentary that summarizes the meaning; and those that summarize the meaning of the statements and explain them, such as the commentary that is only on the meaning of the statements, making a total of five. In the second type, there are three types: those that fully explain the meaning of one sutra, those that explain it in a scattered way, and those that explain the meaning of many sutras. The first type includes treatises such as the Ornament of Clear Realization or the Root Verses on Wisdom. The second type includes treatises such as the Shramanera Vinaya. The third type includes treatises such as the Compendium of Trainings or the Letter to a Friend. In general, commentaries have many names such as commentary, explanation, detailed explanation, combined explanation, summarized meaning, explanation of difficult points, extensive explanation, well-combined, and detailed distinction. Therefore, the classification of treatises is for the purpose of increasing intelligence, and it is only a classification of treatises. The previous definitions and meanings are for specific treatises, so they are not considered contradictory. Treatise.
