This etymology also applies to the Buddha's words. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it is said that the Buddha's words are suitable as the definition of a treatise. In terms of etymology, it is a treatise because it tames and protects. Whatever completely tames the enemies of afflictions and protects from bad migrations and existence, it is a treatise because of the qualities of taming and protecting; these two are not found in other systems.

O, there are three kinds of treatises: distinguishing and integrating confusion. The first is like the Vinaya Sutra, the second is like the Ornament of Clear Realization, and the third is like the Sutra Ornament or the Compendium of Trainings. The third has three aspects: teaching all that is knowable, teaching suchness, and teaching liberation and omniscience. The first is divided into two types: common and special. The first includes treatises on worldly customs and eighteen types of examinations, such as the "Hundred Wisdoms," "Nectar for Healing Beings," and "Treasury of Verses." These are also causes for higher rebirth and can serve as a basis for liberation. If one practices human laws well, the path to the heavenly realms is not far. On the ladder of gods and humans, if one climbs, liberation is near. This is stated in the "Hundred Wisdoms." Similar to this are examinations of horses, examinations of cattle, and so on. The second is primarily treatises on the fields of knowledge. As stated in the Sutra Ornament: Without diligence in the five fields of knowledge, even the supreme noble ones will not attain omniscience. Therefore, one should be diligent in these fields in order to subdue others, to take others as disciples, and to fully understand oneself. Thus, subduing others involves logic and grammar, taking others as disciples involves medicine and crafts, and fully understanding oneself involves inner knowledge. Logic includes direct perception, inference for oneself, inference for others, exclusion of others, example, valid proof, and examination. These are summarized into six aspects and taught, such as in the Pramana Sutra. Or its commentaries, such as the seven commentaries, or the seven examinations, or the eight accomplishments, or the seven followers, and so on. The seven commentaries are: the main three treatises like the body, and the four branch treatises like limbs. The first is: the method of easily understanding correct knowledge with sharp, medium, and dull faculties, teaching the three: "Drop of Reasoning," "Ascertainment of Validity," and "Commentary on Validity." Although the Kashmiri Jñanaśrī does not consider "Ascertainment of Validity" to be a commentary on the Pramana Sutra, his view should be clarified. It is reasonable that Acharya Dharmakirti composed it as a commentary on the Sutra. The four branch treatises are direct perception.
