Like saying "Yes, very good," and so on. The section on the basis of discussion (gleng gzhi'i sde) is the teaching spoken for the sake of certain individuals, including the precepts along with their origins and circumstances, such as the precept against taking what is not given for those with possessions. The section on accounts of realization (rtogs pa brjod pa'i sde) is taught with examples, because this clarifies the meaning. The section on such occurrences (de lta bu byung ba'i sde) is connected with previous actions, like the story of Kisa Gotami. The section on birth stories (skyes pa rabs kyi sde) shows the conduct of bodhisattvas, like the biography of Sarvatrata. The extensive section (shin tu rgyas pa'i sde) possesses the bodhisattva pitaka, because it teaches the Dharma in a way that benefits and brings happiness to all sentient beings, and in a manner that is extensive, vast, profound. Because it completely removes all obscurations, it is called "completely removing" (rnam par 'thag pa). Because it is incomparable to others, it is called "incomparable" (mtshungs bral). Because it possesses the seven greatnesses, it is called the "Great Vehicle" (theg pa chen po). The section on the marvelous (rmad du byung ba'i sde) teaches the wondrous and marvelous Dharma of the shravakas, bodhisattvas, and buddhas. The section on showing the established (gtan la phab par bstan pa'i sde) is where the characteristics of the Dharma are taught without error, explaining the meaning of the sutras and so forth. Fourth, the three pitakas: Here, the twelve branches are collected into the three pitakas, along with the definition of the pitakas, the reason for establishing the three pitakas, and the definition of each of the pitakas. First, the five—sutras, songs, prophecies, verses, and self-utterances—are the pitaka of the shravaka sutra pitaka. The section on the basis of discussion, which teaches the precepts including their origins, is the main part of the vinaya pitaka. The three—accounts of realization, such occurrences, and birth stories—are its retinue, so these four are the vinaya pitaka. The extensive section and the marvelous section are the pitaka of the bodhisattva sutra pitaka, because the extraordinary power of the bodhisattvas and buddhas is inconceivable and possesses vast qualities, so the marvelous is also included in the bodhisattva sutra pitaka. The section on showing the established is the abhidharma pitaka of both the Mahayana and the shravakas. This method of collection is according to the system of the Compendium of Topics (Kun las btus). Elsewhere,

There is also such a saying. Secondly, in Sanskrit, it is called "pitaka," and when translated as "pandita," it means "heap" or "collection." It means that many meanings are collected as the content to be expressed, or that all knowledge is collected as the content to be expressed, hence it is called "canon." Or, "pitaka" is the name of a large "bre" (a unit of measurement) in the central region. Just as many small "breu" are contained within a large "bre," these contain many things to be expressed and learned, hence they are called "canon." Thirdly, the three canons are established for nine reasons: three in relation to what should be abandoned, three in relation to what should be learned, and three in relation to what should be known. Firstly, the Sutra Pitaka is established as an antidote to the near afflictions of doubt, in order to cut off the doubts of those to be tamed regarding the truth and the Three Jewels, etc., and therefore the Sutra section, etc., is explained. The Vinaya Pitaka is established as an antidote to the near afflictions that possess two extremes, in order to counter the habit of indulging in desires and accumulating possessions, even a slight accumulation is prohibited. If one becomes free from attachment through pure discipline, then even a five-hundred-story building, or food with a hundred flavors, or clothes worth a hundred thousand karshapanas, etc., are allowed, thus avoiding the extreme of toil and fatigue. The Abhidhamma Pitaka is established as an antidote to the near affliction of holding one's own view as supreme, because there the definition of Dharma is extensively explained. Secondly, the Sutra Pitaka is established to explain the three trainings, because the three trainings are explained in detail from there, thereby making those to be tamed proficient in the three trainings. The Vinaya is established to accomplish the training of discipline and mind, relying on the precepts of individual liberation, actually practicing discipline completely, and because of the purity of discipline, gradually attaining freedom from regret, etc., thereby calming the mind. The Abhidhamma is established to accomplish the training of wisdom, because there the method of completely distinguishing Dharma is extensively explained. Thirdly, the Sutra Pitaka is established to explain Dharma and meaning, it makes one proficient in the meaning of words. The Vinaya is established as the basis for manifesting Dharma and meaning, therefore, the Vinaya Pitaka is completely distinguished by practicing the training, thereby attaining samadhi through pure discipline.
