Śa. The realm of Dharma is fully known. Relying on sound and ear, there are three completely pure wisdoms. The absence of characteristics is the realm of Dharma. Accompanied by thought, it becomes hearing. Relying on the nose and smell, various differences arise. That is an example of formlessness. Similarly, the consciousness of the nose contemplates the realm of Dharma. The nature of the tongue is emptiness. The realm of taste is also solitary. By the nature of the realm of Dharma, consciousness has nowhere to dwell. The nature of a pure body and the characteristics of the conditions of touch. Being liberated from pure conditions is called the realm of Dharma. For all phenomena that are primarily mental, having completely abandoned thought and permanence, all phenomena are without inherent existence, and should be meditated upon in the realm of Dharma. Seeing, hearing, and grossness, experiencing and being touched, the yogi, having thus known all phenomena, perfects their characteristics. Eyes, ears, and noses, tongues, bodies, and likewise minds, these six sources are all completely pure, this is that, it is its characteristic. Thus it is said. If the movement of conceptual thought, like fire, is extinguished, the illusion of attachment and aversion, like smoke, will cease. The yogi's experience, the six realms of clear light, and the emptiness of the six realms of attachment, appear as self-awareness separately. In the Sutra of Pure Thought, Manjushri asked: How is the experience of a monastic yogi practicing samadhi best? The Buddha replied: For example, if the fire in the stove is extinguished, just as the smoke from the window disappears. If one knows that mind and awareness are empty, then the appearance of form is empty, the arising of sound is empty, the sensation of smell is empty, the experience of taste is empty, and the experience of the sensation of touch will arise. If the sky is not obscured, it is clear. If the water is not turbid, it is clear. If the mind is not fabricated, it is blissful. Therefore, it should be said: The yogi who knows the nature of the mind, whatever he does, remains in a state of meditation. He abides in the original meaning. This is the explanation of the experience of samadhi. Thus it is said. The arising of the ground of the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu, and the faculties such as the eyes, and the consciousnesses such as eye consciousness, and all objects such as forms, although they are all the arising and the eighteen elements of the ultimate Dharmadhatu.

Moreover, the earth element is not the eighteen elements and sources accepted by conventional truth, because the characteristic of earth in conventional truth is hardness, and the characteristic of the eye is not seeing forms in conventional truth, etc. In short, it is not the characteristic of the eighteen elements of conventional truth. As stated in the sutra taught by the noble Incomparable Wisdom: 'Although the realm of phenomena is the earth element, the characteristic of the realm of phenomena is not hardness. Although the realm of phenomena is the water element, the characteristic of the realm of phenomena is not wetness. Although the realm of phenomena is the fire element, the characteristic of the realm of phenomena is not ripening. Although the realm of phenomena is the wind element, the characteristic of the realm of phenomena is not movement. Although the realm of phenomena is the eye element, the characteristic of the realm of phenomena is not seeing. Although the realm of phenomena is the elements of ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, and eye consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness, the characteristic of the realm of phenomena is not just hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and distinguishing, as well as distinguishing forms, distinguishing sounds, distinguishing smells, distinguishing tastes, distinguishing tactile objects, and distinguishing phenomena. Although the realm of phenomena is the form element, sound, smell, taste, tactile object, and phenomena elements, the characteristic of being distinguished by eye consciousness, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness is not.' Likewise, although it is the earth element of ultimate truth, because it does not have the characteristic of hardness of the earth element of conventional truth, it is not the earth element of conventional truth. Similarly, although it is the water, fire, and wind of ultimate truth, because it does not have the characteristics of wetness, burning, and movement of the water, fire, and wind of conventional truth, it is not the water, fire, and wind of conventional truth. Similarly, although the eighteen elements with sense faculties and objects are the wisdom of the realm of phenomena of ultimate truth, because it does not have the characteristic of substantiality of the eighteen elements with sense faculties and objects of conventional truth, it is not the eighteen elements with sense faculties and objects of conventional truth.
