Foxes, wolves, yaks, goats, sheep, and so on, all devour each other. Moreover, underground there are: worms, ants, beetles, scorpions, centipedes, and so on, each filling the earth. They also kill each other. In the water there are: fish, frogs, tadpoles, and so on, countless aquatic creatures, who also kill each other. In the sky there are also: vultures, crows, eagles, hawks, sparrows, ravens, pigeons, crows, wagtails, and so on, filling the sky. They also kill and eat each other. Even a single bee fills the sky and the earth. Everything is alive, devouring each other, with wails and terrible sounds. The sky, space, and earth are all trembling. Meditate that they are very numerous and vast. In the midst of them, on top of a high rocky mountain, I am alone, without friends. I alone have obtained a human body and am there. Then, I am about to fall off the cliff. I think: Alas! Among so many beings in hell, hungry ghosts, and animals, I alone have obtained a human body. This time it must be good luck, or it must have come from the power of virtue. Having obtained this difficult-to-obtain human body, if I return empty-handed, back to such great suffering, it is such a pity! Having obtained such a difficult-to-obtain human body, I have no power to remain for long. Now I am sure to fall into hell quickly. Now, what can I do to avoid falling into hell? Where is the way? Alas! Woe is me! Oh, how terrible! Thinking this, I utter such a lament: Alas, I am so afraid! Alas, I am so afraid! So many beings in the lower realms! So difficult to obtain a human body! So quick to fall into hell! Difficult to obtain and easy to lose! How can I be liberated from this? If there is a way, I will practice it! As I am lamenting, in the sky above me, as before, my root guru appears with the gesture of granting refuge, and I meditate that he says to me: Kye ma! Just hearing these words, my thought was: Alas, among so many sentient beings, it is difficult for me alone to obtain this rare human body. Now I myself must be liberated from the suffering of samsara, and I will liberate all sentient beings without exception. Now there is no time for negligence, I must quickly place them on the ground of Buddhahood. As soon as I had this thought, a ray of light essence pierced me from the heart of the Lama, and I immediately arrived in the Pure Land of Bliss. Again, from my heart, countless rays of light emanated, thinking of leading all those sentient beings to the place of great bliss without exception, and generating intense compassion for all sentient beings. Like this, constantly thinking about the difficulty of obtaining a human body, the Lama should also explain in detail the reasons for the difficulty of obtaining a human body. In short, it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: This leisure and opportunity is extremely difficult to obtain. Having obtained it, one can accomplish the benefit of beings. If one does not accomplish this beneficial deed, it will be difficult to obtain this perfect body again in the future. And it is said in the Sutra: Just like scattering beans separately, one might stick together, but all of them fall on the ground and scatter. Looking at the number of sentient beings, one knows how difficult it is to obtain a human body. Also, it is said in the Sutra: The Venerable Shariputra asked the Bhagavan: Venerable, how many hells are there? How many pretas are there? How many animals are there? How many asuras are there? How many gods and humans are there? The Bhagavan replied: Shariputra, hells are as many as the earth, pretas are as many as the grains of sand, animals are as many as the lees of wine, asuras are as many as a blizzard, and gods and humans are as many as the dust on a fingernail. Therefore, know that it is extremely difficult to obtain a human body.
