O! Like a prisoner being led to the slaughter, with each step drawing closer to death. As the great scholar Nagarjuna said: The causes of death are many, the causes of life are few. Even the causes of life can turn into causes of death. Therefore, one should constantly strive in the Dharma. As it says in the Jewel Peak Sutra: Friends, this life is impermanent, as swift as a torrent of water on a steep cliff. Because childish beings do not realize this, they are intoxicated by the arrogance of ignorant desires. As it says in the Sutra: The Lord of Death, the Mara, is like a lurking hunter, bird, and fish. Birth, old age, sickness, and death are like a self-grinding pattern. From this world, all, great and small, rich and poor, none can escape the grasp of the Lord of Death. Furthermore, in the Great Vehicle Yoga it says: All the elders who have died in the past, always hoping to accumulate sons and wealth, but sons and wealth are of little benefit to oneself in the next life. Thus it is said, because it is so impermanent, passing away without staying for even a moment, there is no time to be lazy. Thus, quoting many scriptural authorities, one should generate renunciation. Having practiced contemplating the faults of such death and impermanence, understanding that all worldly activities are impermanent, one's own mind becomes more peaceful, and experiences such as diligence in the Dharma arise. Even if one has meditated on impermanence, if the desires of this life become stronger, and if one does not become attached to solitary places, then one should meditate until experience arises. This is the essence of all Dharmas, if one does not gain benefit from this, then meditative experience will not arise, therefore diligence in this is very important. Whichever of the superior, middling, or inferior faculties, one will be liberated by this, therefore effort in this is very important. When seeing sentient beings who do not remember death, meditate until compassion arises with tears streaming down. Meditate on this for three nights. Having meditated in this way, one will temporarily obtain perfect happiness, and ultimately attain Buddhahood. Experience it! In the Quintessential Instructions on the Six Bardos - Self-Liberation of Intentions, meditating on death and impermanence is the third Dharma session. These three are the preliminaries for taming one's own mind, it is extremely important to first be diligent in these three. If one does not establish a firm foundation in these, then all other Dharmas will slip away, and those Dharmas will only increase afflictions.
