The group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir, rising in the early morning at night, having put on wooden sandals, walked in the open air, making loud noises, great noises, clattering noises, speaking various kinds of worldly talk. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Where, friends, was a dukkaṭa laid down by the Blessed One for one who travels by vehicle? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was laid down concerning the group of six bhikkhus. The group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir, traveled by vehicle. In that matter, venerable sir, enacted. Question – Friend, a vehicle for a sick person, by the Blessed One, where was it permitted? Concerning whom, in what matter was it permitted? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning a certain sick monk, it was permitted. A certain monk, venerable sir, going to Sāvatthī in the Kosala country to see the Blessed One, became sick on the way, and feeling remorse, did not ride in a vehicle. In that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question – Friend, for one using high and large beds/seats, where was a dukkaṭa prescribed by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter was it prescribed? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning the group of six monks, it was prescribed. The group of six monks, venerable sir, used high and large beds/seats. In that matter, venerable sir, it was prescribed. Question – Friend, for one using ox-hides, where was a dukkaṭa prescribed by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter was it prescribed? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning a certain evil monk, it was prescribed. A certain monk, venerable sir, encouraged the taking of life. In that matter, venerable sir, it was prescribed. Question – Friend, in the border regions, ordination by a group of five, with a Vinaya-holder as the fifth, and wearing sandals with multiple straps, and bathing regularly, and using hides as coverings, and giving robes to those who have gone beyond the boundary – these five things, by the Blessed One, where were they permitted? Concerning whom, in what matter were they permitted? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning the venerable Soṇa Kuṭikaṇṇa, they were permitted. The venerable Soṇa Kuṭikaṇṇa, venerable sir, these five matters, at the word of the venerable Mahākaccāna, requested of the Blessed One. In that matter, venerable sir, they were permitted. Question – I will ask about the section on hides, with its origin and explanation. Friend, for the elevated clauses, how many offenses are there? Answer – I will answer about the section on hides, with its origin and explanation. Venerable sir, for the elevated clauses, there are three offenses. iyo. 6. Chapter on Medicines Question – Friends, where did the Blessed One permit the five medicines to be consumed at the proper time and at the improper time? Concerning whom, and on what occasion, was it permitted? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning many monks, it was permitted. For many monks, venerable sir, afflicted with an autumn illness, even gruel did not digest properly, and even food eaten did not digest properly. They became thin, venerable sir, rough, discolored, jaundiced, with bodies covered in veins. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question – Friends, where did the Blessed One permit root and other medicines? Concerning whom, and on what occasion, were they permitted? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning many sick monks, they were permitted. Many sick monks, venerable sir, had need of root medicines. On that occasion, venerable sir, they were permitted. Question – Friends, where did the Blessed One prescribe an offense of wrong-doing for one who consumes what is cooked inside, or what is cooked inside by oneself, or what is cooked by oneself? Concerning whom, and on what occasion, was it prescribed? Answer – In Rājagaha, venerable sir, concerning the venerable Ānanda, it was prescribed. The venerable Ānanda, venerable sir, had sesame, rice, and mung beans requested, cooked them inside, and cooked them inside by himself. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was prescribed. The Story of Suppiyā Question – Friends, where did the Blessed One prescribe a serious offense for one who consumes human flesh, and an offense of wrong-doing for one who consumes flesh without reflection? Concerning whom, and on what occasion, was it prescribed? Answer – In Bārāṇasī, venerable sir, concerning a certain monk, it was prescribed. A certain monk, venerable sir, consumed human flesh without reflection. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was prescribed. Monks, human flesh should not be consumed. Whoever consumes it incurs a serious offense. And monks, Meat should not be eaten without reflection. Whoever eats it incurs an offense of wrong-doing. Question – Friend, where was the offense of wrong-doing for eating elephant meat or horse meat laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, on what occasion, was it laid down? Answer – In Bārāṇasī, venerable sir, it was laid down concerning many monks. Many venerable monks ate elephant meat and horse meat. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Friend, where was the offense of wrong-doing for eating dog meat or snake meat laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, on what occasion, was it laid down? Answer – In Bārāṇasī, venerable sir, it was laid down concerning many monks. Many venerable monks ate dog meat and snake meat. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Friend, where was the offense of wrong-doing for eating lion meat or tiger meat or leopard meat or bear meat or hyena meat laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, on what occasion, was it laid down? Answer – In Bārāṇasī itself, venerable sir, it was laid down concerning many monks. Many venerable monks ate lion meat and tiger meat and leopard meat and bear meat and hyena meat. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Friend, where was molasses for a sick person or molasses water for a not sick person permitted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, on what occasion, was it permitted? Answer – In Rājagaha, venerable sir, it was permitted concerning many monks. Many venerable monks, being scrupulous, did not eat molasses, thinking "molasses is permitted by the Blessed One only for the sick, not for the not sick." On that occasion, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question – Friend, having laid down an offense of wrong-doing for one knowingly eating meat prepared specifically for (them), where was meat pure in three respects permitted by the Blessed One? Answer Anā – in Vesāli, venerable sir, in the matter of Siha the general, it was permitted. The Mendaka matter Question – to seek provisions, friend, and to enjoy suitable requisites produced from money deposited in the hands of suitable attendants, where was it permitted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it permitted? Answer – Between Bhaddiya, venerable sir, and Anguttarāpa, it was permitted concerning Mendaka the householder. Mendaka the householder, venerable sir, requested the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, there are paths and wildernesses with little water, little food, not easy to travel without provisions. It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would permit provisions for the bhikkhus." In that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. The Keṇiya matter Question – The eight drinks, friend, where were they permitted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, were they permitted? Answer – In Āpaṇa, venerable sir, they were permitted concerning many bhikkhus. Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, feeling scruples, did not accept the drinks. In that matter, venerable sir, they were permitted. The Rojamallā matter Question – All kinds of cakes, friend, and all kinds of flour-foods, where were they permitted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, were they permitted? Answer – In Kusinārā, venerable sir, they were permitted concerning many bhikkhus. Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, feeling scruples, did not accept cakes and flour-foods. In that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question – The offense of wrong-doing, friend, for one who instructs in what is unsuitable, where was it laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Ātumā, venerable sir, it was laid down concerning a certain elder renunciant. A certain elder renunciant, venerable sir, instructed in what was unsuitable. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – Seeds belonging to the Sangha, friend, or belonging to individuals, planted on land belonging to individuals or to the Sangha, having given a share, Where was it permitted by the Blessed One to eat? In what matter was it permitted? Answer: In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was permitted. In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, when the Blessed One was dwelling, they planted communal seeds on private land, and private seeds on communal land. In that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. Question: Where, friend, were the four great references, which are the guidelines for what is allowable and unallowable, enacted by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, were they enacted? Answer: In Sāvatthī, venerable sir,
