Come now, friend, we shall go for alms. How indeed can a monk, in such a well-proclaimed Dhamma and Vinaya, go forth for the sake of his stomach? Question – Where, friends, did the Blessed One prescribe a dukkata offense for one who ordains a person under ten years old, concerning whom, in what matter was it prescribed? Answer – In Rājagaha, venerable sir, it was prescribed concerning the Venerable Upasena Vaṅgantaputta; the Venerable Upasena Vaṅgantaputta, venerable sir, ordained a co-resident when he himself had been a monk for one year; in that matter, venerable sir, it was prescribed. Question – Where, friends, did the Blessed One prescribe a dukkata offense for one who ordains a foolish, incompetent person, concerning whom, in what matter was it prescribed? Question – Where, friend, was the announcement for a quarrel allowed by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, and concerning what matter, was it allowed? Answer – In Rājagaha itself, venerable sir, it was allowed concerning a certain son of a quarrelsome artisan, A certain son of a quarrelsome artisan, venerable sir, having quarreled with his parents, had gone forth among the bhikkhus, It was allowed, venerable sir, concerning that matter. Question – Where, friend, was the full ordination of a person under twenty years of age forbidden by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, and concerning what matter, was it forbidden? Answer – In Rājagaha, venerable sir, it was forbidden concerning many bhikkhus, Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, had given full ordination to a person under twenty years of age, It was forbidden, venerable sir, concerning that matter. Bhikkhus, one who knows should not give full ordination to a person under twenty years of age, If one should give full ordination, he should be dealt with according to the Dhamma. Question – Where, friend, was the offense of wrong-doing laid down by the Blessed One for one who ordains a son not permitted by his parents? Concerning what matter, was it laid down? Answer – Among the Sakyans, venerable sir, it was laid down, King Suddhodana, venerable sir, the Blessed One... Having approached, he asked for a favor: "Good, Venerable Sir, may a son not permitted by his parents be ordained?" In that matter, Venerable Sir, it was laid down. Monks, a son not permitted by his parents should not be ordained. Whoever ordains him incurs an offense of wrong-doing. Question: Friends, where was ordination for a thief-dweller forbidden by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it forbidden? Answer: In Sāvatthī, Venerable Sir, it was forbidden concerning a certain old family son. A certain old family son, Venerable Sir, whose family was ruined, having himself prepared a bowl and robes, having shaved his hair and beard, having put on saffron robes, went to the monastery and lived with the monks. In that matter, Venerable Sir, it was forbidden. Question: Friends, where was ordination for an animal forbidden by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it forbidden? Answer: In Sāvatthī, Venerable Sir, it was forbidden concerning a certain Nāga. A certain Nāga, Venerable Sir, in the guise of a young man, approached the monks and asked for ordination. The monks ordained him and gave him higher ordination. In that matter, Venerable Sir, it was forbidden. Question: Friends, where was ordination for a matricide and for a parricide forbidden by the Blessed One? Concerning whom, in what matter, was it forbidden? Answer: In Sāvatthī itself, Venerable Sir, it was forbidden concerning a certain young man. A certain young man, Venerable Sir, yes, a certain young man, deprived his mother of life, deprived his father of life. In that matter, Venerable Sir, it was forbidden. Monks, a matricide, if not yet ordained, should not be ordained. If already ordained, he should be expelled. Monks, a parricide, if not yet ordained, should not be ordained. If already ordained, he should be expelled. Question: Friends, where was the offense of wrong-doing laid down by the Blessed One for ordaining one without a bowl and robes, or one who has begged for a bowl and robes? Concerning whom, in what matter? was laid down. Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, concerning many bhikkhus, it was laid down. Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, conferred ordination without a bowl and robe. They conferred ordination with a begged bowl and robe. Concerning that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. The Chapter on Uposatha Question – Friend, where was it permitted by the Blessed One to assemble on the fourteenth, and on the fifteenth, and on the eighth day of the fortnight, and to speak the Dhamma? Concerning what matter was it permitted? Answer – In Rājagaha, venerable sir, concerning many bhikkhus, it was permitted. Many bhikkhus, venerable sir, assembled on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight, and sat in silence. Concerning that matter, venerable sir, it was permitted. Bhikkhus, I permit you to assemble on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight. Should not the Dhamma be spoken by those who have assembled? Question – Friend, when was the recitation of the Pātimokkha permitted by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus? Answer – When, venerable sir, the Blessed One, having gone into seclusion, having retired, such a thought arose in his mind: "What if I were to permit the recitation of the Pātimokkha for them, concerning the training rules laid down by me for the bhikkhus? That would be their Uposatha act." Then, venerable sir, the recitation of the Pātimokkha was permitted by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus. Question – Friend, where was it permitted by the Blessed One to establish a boundary? And concerning what matter was it permitted? Answer – In Rājagaha, venerable sir, it was permitted. In Rājagaha, venerable sir, while the Blessed One was dwelling, it occurred to the bhikkhus: "The Blessed One has laid down that unity is as far as one dwelling place.
