does not fully understand the latent tendency of desire for existence, does he from that not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual desire, and the latent tendency of aversion, and the latent tendency of conceit? One endowed with the non-returner's path, in painful feeling, from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of desire for existence, and the latent tendency of sensual desire, and the latent tendency of conceit, but from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of aversion. That very person, in the sense-sphere, in two feelings, from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of desire for existence, and the latent tendency of aversion, and the latent tendency of conceit, but from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual desire. That very person, when not included in the form-sphere or the formless-sphere, from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of desire for existence, and the latent tendency of sensual desire, and the latent tendency of aversion, and the latent tendency of conceit. One endowed with the highest path, in the sense-sphere, in two feelings, from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of desire for existence, and the latent tendency of sensual desire, and the latent tendency of aversion, but from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit. That very person, when not included in painful feeling, from that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of desire for existence, and the latent tendency of sensual desire, and the latent tendency of aversion, and the latent tendency of conceit. Except for the two who are endowed with the path, the remaining individuals everywhere do not fully understand the latent tendency of craving for existence, and do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit. (A) Whoever, from wherever, does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit, does he, from there, not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance? One endowed with the highest path, in painful feeling, he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit, but it is not that he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance. That same individual, in the unincluded, he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit, and does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance. Except for the two who are endowed with the path, the remaining individuals everywhere do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit, and do not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance. (B) Or whoever, from wherever, does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance, does he, from there, not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit? One endowed with the Non-returner's path, in painful feeling, he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance, and does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, and does not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit, but it is not that he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of aversion. That same individual, in the sense-sphere, in two feelings, he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance, and does not fully understand the latent tendency of aversion, and does not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit, but it is not that he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving. That same individual, in the form-sphere, in the formless-sphere, in the unincluded, he, from there, does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance, and does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit. Except for the two who are endowed with the path, the remaining individuals everywhere do not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance, and do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, and of conceit. 261. (A) Whoever, from wherever, does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual craving, of aversion, of conceit, and of wrong view, does he, from there, not fully understand the latent tendency of doubt? Does he fully comprehend? Yes. (Kha) Or again, whoever from which (state/feeling) has not abandoned the underlying tendency of doubt, does he from that (state/feeling) also not abandon the underlying tendency of sensual lust, and aversion, and conceit, and views? One endowed with the non-returner's path, in painful feeling, he from that has not abandoned the underlying tendency of doubt, and sensual lust, and conceit, and views; but he has abandoned the underlying tendency of aversion from that. That same person, in the two feelings of the sense-sphere, he from that has not abandoned the underlying tendency of doubt, and aversion, and conceit, and views; but he has abandoned the underlying tendency of sensual lust from that. That same person, in the form-sphere, the formless-sphere, and not included (in any sphere), he from that has not abandoned the underlying tendency of doubt, and has not abandoned the underlying tendency of sensual lust, and aversion, and conceit, and views. One endowed with the highest path (Arahant), in the two feelings of the sense-sphere, in the form-sphere, in the formless-sphere, he from that has not abandoned the underlying tendency of doubt, and sensual lust, and aversion, and views; but he has abandoned the underlying tendency of conceit from that. That same person, in painful feeling, and not included (in any sphere), he from that has not abandoned the underlying tendency of doubt, and has not abandoned the underlying tendency of sensual lust, and aversion, and conceit, and views. Excluding those endowed with the two paths and the eighth (person, i.e., the Arahant), the remaining persons everywhere have not abandoned the underlying tendency of doubt, and have not abandoned the underlying tendency of sensual lust, and aversion, and conceit, and views. ...and so on... (Root of the Fourfold) 262. (Ka) Whoever from which (state/feeling) has not abandoned the underlying tendency of sensual lust, and aversion, and conceit, and views, and doubt, does he from that (state/feeling) not abandon the underlying tendency of lust for existence? Yes. (Kha) Or again, whoever from which (state/feeling) has not abandoned the underlying tendency of lust for existence, does he from that (state/feeling) also not abandon the underlying tendency of sensual lust, and aversion, and conceit, and views, and doubt? What? The eighth person, in the sense-sphere, in the three feelings, in the form-sphere, in the formless-sphere, does not abandon from that the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of sensual craving, the latent tendency of aversion, the latent tendency of conceit. But he does abandon from that the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. That very person, in the unconditioned, does not abandon from that the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of sensual craving, the latent tendency of aversion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. One endowed with the path of a Non-returner, in painful feeling, does not abandon from that the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of sensual craving, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. But he does abandon from that the latent tendency of aversion. That very person, in the sense-sphere, in the two feelings, does not abandon from that the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of aversion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. But he does abandon from that the latent tendency of sensual craving. That very person, in the form-sphere, in the formless-sphere, in the unconditioned, does not abandon from that the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of sensual craving, the latent tendency of aversion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. One endowed with the highest path, in the sense-sphere, in the two feelings, does not abandon from that the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of sensual craving, the latent tendency of aversion, the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. But he does abandon from that the latent tendency of conceit. That very person, in painful feeling, in the unconditioned, does not abandon from that the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of sensual craving, the latent tendency of aversion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. Excluding the two endowed with the path and the eighth person, the remaining individuals everywhere do not abandon the latent tendency of craving for becoming, the latent tendency of sensual craving, the latent tendency of aversion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of wrong view, the latent tendency of doubt. (Ka) Who, from where, the latent tendency of sensual craving and aversion... Does he not fully understand the underlying tendency of sensual desire, and the underlying tendency of conceit, and the underlying tendency of views, and the underlying tendency of doubt, and from that, does he not fully understand the underlying tendency of ignorance? One endowed with the highest path, in painful feeling, from that, does not fully understand the underlying tendency of sensual desire,
