It should not be said thus... Is he one who heard from others? Yes. Is not the Blessed One self-born? Yes. If the Blessed One is self-born, then it should not be said – "he is one who heard from others." Did the Bodhisatta, having entered the discipline of Kassapa the Blessed One, live the holy life? Yes. Did the Blessed One, at the root of the Bodhi tree, fully awaken to only three fruits of recluseship? It should not be said thus... and so on. Did not the Blessed One, at the root of the Bodhi tree, fully awaken to four fruits of recluseship? Yes. If the Blessed One, at the root of the Bodhi tree, fully awakened to four fruits of recluseship, then it should not be said – "the Bodhisatta, having entered the discipline of Kassapa the Blessed One, lived the holy life." Did the Bodhisatta, having entered the discipline of Kassapa the Blessed One, live the holy life? Yes. Did the Bodhisatta perform difficult deeds? Yes. Would a person endowed with right view perform difficult deeds? It should not be said thus... and so on. Did the Bodhisatta perform extreme asceticism, and dedicate himself to another teacher? Yes. Would a person endowed with right view dedicate himself to another teacher? It should not be said thus... and so on. Did Venerable Ānanda, having entered the discipline of the Blessed One, live the holy life, and is Venerable Ānanda a disciple of the Blessed One? Yes. Did the Bodhisatta, having entered the discipline of Kassapa the Blessed One, live the holy life, and is the Bodhisatta a disciple of Kassapa the Blessed One? It should not be said thus... and so on. Did Citta the householder, Hatthaka of Āḷavī, having entered the discipline of the Blessed One, live the holy life, and is Citta the householder, Hatthaka of Āḷavī, a disciple of the Blessed One? Yes. Did the Bodhisatta, having entered the discipline of Kassapa the Blessed One, live the holy life, and is the Bodhisatta a disciple of Kassapa the Blessed One? It should not be said thus... and so on. Did the Bodhisatta, having entered the discipline of Kassapa the Blessed One, live the holy life, but was not a disciple of Kassapa the Blessed One? Yes. The venerable Ānanda, in the teaching of the Blessed One, entered upon the discipline, lived the holy life, and is not a disciple of the Blessed One? It should not be said thus… The Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, entered upon the discipline, lived the holy life, and is not a disciple of Kassapa the Blessed One? Yes. Householder Citta, Hatthaka of Āḷavī, in the teaching of the Blessed One, entered upon the discipline, lived the holy life, and is not a disciple of the Blessed One? It should not be said thus… The Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, entered upon the discipline, lived the holy life, and is not a disciple of Kassapa the Blessed One? Yes. One who has overcome birth, is he not a disciple? It should not be said thus… 405. Should it not be said: “The Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, entered upon the discipline, lived the holy life”? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One: “In Kassapa the Blessed One, Ānanda, I lived the holy life for future full enlightenment”? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then it should not be said: “The Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, entered upon the discipline, lived the holy life.” The Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, entered upon the discipline, lived the holy life? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One: “All-conquering am I, all-knowing am I, unattached to all things. Having renounced all, freed by the destruction of craving, having understood by myself, whom should I point to as my teacher? “I have no teacher, one like me does not exist. In the world with its deities, there is no one equal to me. “For I am an Arahant in the world, I am the supreme teacher. I alone am a Fully Self-Enlightened One, calmed am I, extinguished. “To set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma, I go to the city of Kāsī. In this world blinded, I shall beat the drum of the Deathless.” “As you, friend, declare, you are worthy to be the infinite conqueror”? “Such indeed are the conquerors, who have reached the destruction of defilements…” Imperishable; Evil states have been conquered by me, Therefore, Upaka, I am the Victor. Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then it should not be said: “The Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, entered the fixed course and lived the holy life.” Did the Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, enter the fixed course and live the holy life? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One: “‘This is the noble truth of suffering’ – thus, monks, concerning doctrines unheard before, vision arose in me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose. ‘This noble truth of suffering should be fully understood’ – thus, monks... ...‘it has been fully understood’ – thus, monks, concerning doctrines unheard before, vision arose in me... ...light arose. ‘This is the noble truth of the origin of suffering’ – thus, monks... ...‘this noble truth of the origin of suffering should be abandoned’ – thus, monks... ...‘it has been abandoned’ – thus, monks... ...‘this is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering’ – thus, monks... ...‘this noble truth of the cessation of suffering should be realized’ – thus, monks... ...‘it has been realized’ – thus, monks... ...‘this is the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering’ – thus, monks... ...‘this noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering should be developed’ – thus, monks... ...‘it has been developed’ – thus, monks, concerning doctrines unheard before, vision arose in me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose.” Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then it should not be said: “The Bodhisatta, in the teaching of Kassapa the Blessed One, entered the fixed course and lived the holy life.” The discourse on entering the fixed course is concluded. 4. The Fourth Chapter (41) 9. Another discourse on being endowed 406. Of Arahantship A person practicing for realization is endowed with three fruits? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of Arahantship is endowed with four contacts, four feelings, four perceptions, four volitions, four consciousnesses, four faiths, four energies, four mindfulnesses, four concentrations, four wisdoms? It should not be said thus... A person practicing for the realization of the Non-returner's fruit is endowed with two fruits? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of the Non-returner's fruit is endowed with three contacts, three feelings... three wisdoms? It should not be said thus... A person practicing for the realization of the Once-returner's fruit is endowed with the Stream-enterer's fruit? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of the Once-returner's fruit is endowed with two contacts, two feelings... two wisdoms? It should not be said thus... A person practicing for the realization of Arahantship is endowed with the Stream-enterer's fruit? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of Arahantship is a Stream-enterer, one who will return at most seven times, one who goes from family to family, one with a single seed? It should not be said thus... A person practicing for the realization of Arahantship is endowed with the Once-returner's fruit? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of Arahantship is a Once-returner? It should not be said thus... A person practicing for the realization of Arahantship is endowed with the Non-returner's fruit? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of Arahantship is a Non-returner, one who attains Nibbāna in the interim, one who attains Nibbāna upon striking, one who attains Nibbāna without exertion, one who attains Nibbāna with exertion, one whose stream flows upwards to the Akaniṭṭha realm? It should not be said thus... A person practicing for the realization of the Non-returner's fruit is endowed with the Stream-enterer's fruit? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of the Non-returner's fruit is a Stream-enterer, one who will return at most seven times, one who goes from family to family, one with a single seed? It should not be said thus... A person practicing for the realization of the Non-returner's fruit A person who has attained, is he endowed with the fruit of once-returning? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of the fruit of non-returning, is he a once-returner? It should not be said thus. A person practicing for the realization of the fruit of once-returning, is he endowed with the fruit of stream-entry? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of the fruit of once-returning, is he a stream-enterer, one who will return at most seven times, a family-to-family goer, a one-seeder? It should not be said thus. 407. One endowed with the fruit of stream-entry, is he to be called a stream-enterer? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of arahantship, is he endowed with the fruit of stream-entry? Yes. That very person practicing for the realization of arahantship, is he a stream-enterer? It should not be said thus. One endowed with the fruit of once-returning, is he to be called a once-returner? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of arahantship, is he endowed with the fruit of once-returning? Yes. That very person practicing for the realization of arahantship, is he a once-returner? It should not be said thus. One endowed with the fruit of non-returning, is he to be called a non-returner? Yes. A person practicing for the realization of arahantship, is he endowed with the fruit of non-returning? Yes. That very person practicing for the realization of arahantship, is he a non-returner? It should not be said thus. One endowed with the fruit of stream-entry, is he to be called a stream-enterer? Yes.
