If an Arahant is possessed of six-limbed equanimity, then indeed it should be said, “An Arahant is endowed with six kinds of equanimity”… The discourse on being endowed with equanimity is finished. 4. It should not be said so… Is one awakened by awakening? Yes. Is one awakened by past awakening? It should not be said so… Is one awakened by past awakening? Yes. Does one perform the task of awakening by that awakening? It should not be said so… Does one perform the task of awakening by that awakening? Yes. By that awakening, does one fully understand suffering, abandon the origin, realize cessation, and develop the path? It should not be said so… Is one awakened by awakening? Yes. Is one awakened by future awakening? It should not be said so… Is one awakened by future awakening? Yes. By that awakening, the task of awakening… Does he do this? It should not be said thus... By means of that awakening, does he perform the work of awakening? Yes, that is so. By means of that awakening, does he understand suffering, abandon its origin, realize its cessation, develop the path? It should not be said thus... Is he awakened by means of present awakening, and by means of that awakening, does he perform the work of awakening? Yes, that is so. Is he awakened by means of past awakening, and by means of that awakening, does he perform the work of awakening? It should not be said thus... Is he awakened by means of present awakening, and by means of that awakening, does he understand suffering, abandon its origin, realize its cessation, develop the path? Yes, that is so. Is he a Buddha by past enlightenment, a Buddha by future enlightenment, a Buddha by present enlightenment? Yes. Is he a Buddha by three enlightenments? It should not be said thus... Is he a Buddha by three enlightenments? Yes. Is he constantly, continually, uninterruptedly endowed with, and concentrated on, three enlightenments, and are the three enlightenments present? It should not be said thus... Should it not be said – "a Buddha by enlightenment"? Yes. Is he not a Buddha by the attainment of enlightenment? Yes. If he is a Buddha by the attainment of enlightenment, then indeed it should be said – "a Buddha by enlightenment." Is he a Buddha by the attainment of enlightenment, or a Buddha by enlightenment? Yes. Is the attainment of enlightenment, enlightenment itself? It should not be said thus... The discussion on "a Buddha by enlightenment" is concluded. 4. The Fourth Chapter (39) 7. Is a Wheel-turning Monarch endowed with marks, is a Wheel-turning Monarch a Bodhisatta? Yes. Is the past practice, past conduct, teaching of the Dhamma, and exposition of the Dhamma of a Bodhisatta, the same as the past practice, past conduct, teaching of the Dhamma, and exposition of the Dhamma of a Wheel-turning Monarch? It should not be said thus... 401. Just as when a Bodhisatta is born, gods first receive him, then humans, so too for a Wheel-turning Monarch... When he is born, do gods first receive him, and then humans? It should not be said thus. Just as when the Bodhisatta is born, four gods receive him and place him before his mother, saying: "Be joyful, O Queen! A son of great power has been born to you," even so, when a Wheel-turning King is born, do four gods receive him and place him before his mother, saying: "Be joyful, O Queen! A son of great power has been born to you"? It should not be said thus. Just as when the Bodhisatta is born, two streams of water appear from the sky— one cold, one warm— with which they perform the water rites for the Bodhisatta and his mother, even so, when a Wheel-turning King is born, do two streams of water appear from the sky— one cold, one warm— with which they perform the water rites for the Wheel-turning King and his mother? It should not be said thus. Just as the newly born Bodhisatta, standing firmly on his feet, walks seven steps towards the north, with a white parasol held over him, looks in all directions, and utters a lion's roar: "I am the foremost in the world! I am the eldest in the world! I am the best in the world! This is my last birth! There is no more rebirth now!" even so, does the newly born Wheel-turning King, standing firmly on his feet, walk seven steps towards the north, with a white parasol held over him, look in all directions, and utter a lion's roar: "I am the foremost in the world! I am the eldest in the world! I am the best in the world! This is my last birth! There is no more rebirth now!"? It should not be said thus. Just as when the Bodhisatta is born, there is the appearance of a great light, a great radiance, and a great earthquake, even so, when a Wheel-turning King is born, is there the appearance of a great light, a great radiance, and a great earthquake? It should not be said thus... As the Bodhisatta's ordinary body shines all around for a fathom, even so, does the universal monarch's ordinary body shine all around for a fathom? It should not be said thus... As the Bodhisatta sees a great dream, even so, does the universal monarch see a great dream? It should not be said thus... 402. Should it not be said: "The Bodhisatta is endowed with the marks (of a great man)"? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: "Monks, there are these thirty-two marks of a great man, with which a great man, being endowed, has only two destinies, no other! If he dwells in a house, he becomes a universal monarch, a righteous king of righteousness, a conqueror of the four quarters, one who has attained stability in his country, endowed with the seven jewels. These seven jewels are his: namely, the wheel-jewel, the elephant-jewel, the horse-jewel, the gem-jewel, the woman-jewel, the householder-jewel, and the adviser-jewel as the seventh. Moreover, he has more than a thousand sons, who are brave, heroic in form, crushers of enemy armies. He conquers and dwells over this earth, bounded by the ocean, without rod, without weapon, by righteousness. But if he goes forth from the home life into homelessness, he becomes an Arahant, a Fully Self-Awakened One, one who has removed the veil from the world." Is there such a Sutta? Yes. Therefore, the Bodhisatta is endowed with the marks. The discourse on marks is concluded. 4. The Fourth Chapter (40) 8. Discourse on Entering the Fixed Course 403. Did the Bodhisatta, in the teaching of the Blessed One Kassapa, enter the fixed course and practice the holy life? Yes. Was the Bodhisatta a disciple of the Blessed One Kassapa? It should not be said thus... Was the Bodhisatta a disciple of the Blessed One Kassapa? Yes. Having been a disciple, does one become a Buddha? It should not be said thus... Having been a disciple, does one become a Buddha? Yes. Is it by hearsay?
