Are all fetters abandoned by the Arahantship path? Yes. Does one abandon gross sensual desire and gross ill-will by the Arahantship path? It should not be said thus... 415. Does one abandon gross sensual desire and gross ill-will by the Arahantship path? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One that the attenuation of sensual desire and ill-will is the fruit of Once-returning? Yes. If it has been said by the Blessed One that the attenuation of sensual desire and ill-will is the fruit of Once-returning, then it should certainly not be said: "All fetters are abandoned by the Arahantship path." Are all fetters abandoned by the Arahantship path? Yes. Does one abandon subtle sensual desire and subtle ill-will by the Arahantship path? It should not be said thus... 416. Does one abandon subtle sensual desire and subtle ill-will by the Arahantship path? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One that the complete abandoning of sensual desire and ill-will is the fruit of Non-returning? Yes. If it has been said by the Blessed One that the complete abandoning of sensual desire and ill-will is the fruit of Non-returning, then it should certainly not be said: "All fetters are abandoned by the Arahantship path." Are all fetters abandoned by the Arahantship path? Yes. Has it not been said that the complete abandoning of craving for form, craving for formlessness, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance... Is Arahantship declared by the Blessed One? Yes. If the complete abandonment of form-lust, formless-lust, conceit, agitation, and ignorance is declared as Arahantship by the Blessed One, then it should not be said – "By the path of Arahantship all fetters are abandoned." 417. Should it not be said – "The abandonment of all fetters is Arahantship"? Yes. But for an Arahant, are all fetters abandoned? Yes. If for an Arahant all fetters are abandoned, then it should be said – "The abandonment of all fetters is Arahantship." The discourse on the abandonment of all fetters is concluded. The Fourth Chapter. Its summary – A lay Arahant, an Arahant with rebirth, for an Arahant all phenomena are taintless, an Arahant endowed with four fruits, likewise with six equanimities, a Buddha by enlightenment, endowed with characteristics, a Bodhisatta entered on the fixed course, one who has practiced the holy life, one who has entered the path, endowed with the fruit, the abandonment of all fetters is Arahantship.
