Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. 257. Among these, what is ignorance? That unknowing, not seeing…and so on… the stain of ignorance, delusion, the root of unwholesome – this is called “ignorance.” Among these, what is volitional formation conditioned by ignorance, with ignorance as its cause? That volition, intending, the state of having intended – this is called “volitional formation conditioned by ignorance, with ignorance as its cause.” Among these, what is consciousness conditioned by volitional formation, with volitional formation as its cause? That mind, mentality, mental…and so on… the mind-consciousness element arising from that – this is called “consciousness conditioned by volitional formation, with volitional formation as its cause.” Among these, what is name conditioned by consciousness, with consciousness as its cause? The feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the volitional formations aggregate – this is called “name conditioned by consciousness, with consciousness as its cause.” Among these, what is the six sense-bases conditioned by name, with name as its cause? That mind, mentality, mental…and so on… the mind-consciousness element arising from that – this is called “the six sense-bases conditioned by name, with name as its cause.” Among these, What is contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base, rooted in the sixth sense-base? That which is contact, touching, full touching, the state of having fully touched – this is called "contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base, rooted in the sixth sense-base." Therein, what is feeling conditioned by contact, rooted in contact? That which is mental pleasantness, mental happiness, pleasantness born of mental contact, happiness born of mental contact, feeling born of mental contact, pleasant feeling born of mental contact, happy feeling born of mental contact – this is called "feeling conditioned by contact, rooted in contact." Therein, what is craving conditioned by feeling, rooted in feeling? That which is lust, passionate lust... ...passionate lust of the mind – this is called "craving conditioned by feeling, rooted in feeling." Therein, what is clinging conditioned by craving, rooted in craving? That which is view, wrong view... ...a wrong path, a perverted grasp – this is called "clinging conditioned by craving, rooted in craving"... ...by that it is said, "Thus there is the origin of this entire mass of suffering." 258. At that time, conditioned by ignorance, volitional formations rooted in ignorance; conditioned by volitional formations, consciousness rooted in volitional formations; conditioned by consciousness, mentality rooted in consciousness; conditioned by mentality, contact rooted in mentality; conditioned by contact, feeling rooted in contact; conditioned by feeling, craving rooted in feeling; conditioned by craving, clinging rooted in craving; conditioned by clinging, existence; conditioned by existence, birth; conditioned by birth, aging and death. Thus there is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. 259. Therein, what is ignorance? That which is unknowing, not seeing... ...the fetter of ignorance, delusion, the root of unwholesome states – this is called "ignorance." Therein, what are volitional formations conditioned by ignorance, rooted in ignorance? That which is volition, intending, the state of having intended – this is called "volitional formations conditioned by ignorance, rooted in ignorance." Therein, what is consciousness conditioned by volitional formations, rooted in volitional formations? That which is mind, mentality, mentation... ...the mind-consciousness element born thereof – this is called "consciousness conditioned by volitional formations, rooted in volitional formations." Therein, what is conditioned by consciousness... What is name, conditioned by consciousness? The feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the volitional formations aggregate – this is called "name, conditioned by consciousness". Contact, conditioned by name, is conditioned by name. Therein, what is name? Excluding contact, the feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the volitional formations aggregate, the consciousness aggregate – this is called "name". Therein, what is contact, conditioned by name, conditioned by name? That contact, touching, full touching, the state of having fully touched – this is called "contact, conditioned by name, conditioned by name". ...(and so on)... Therefore, it is said: "Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering." 260. At that time, Ignorance conditions volitional formations, volitional formations are conditioned by ignorance. Volitional formations condition consciousness, consciousness is conditioned by volitional formations. Consciousness conditions name-and-form, name-and-form is conditioned by consciousness. Name-and-form conditions the sixth sense-base, the sixth sense-base is conditioned by name-and-form. The sixth sense-base conditions contact, contact is conditioned by the sixth sense-base. Contact conditions feeling, feeling is conditioned by contact. Feeling conditions craving, craving is conditioned by feeling. Craving conditions clinging, clinging is conditioned by craving. Clinging conditions becoming, becoming conditions birth, birth conditions old age and death. Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. 261. Therein, what is ignorance? Thus, this is name, and this is form. This is called "name-and-form conditioned by consciousness, caused by consciousness". "The sixth sense-base is conditioned by name-and-form, caused by name-and-form." There is name, there is form. Among these, what is name? The aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations – this is called "name". Among these, what is form? That form on which the mind-consciousness element operates – this is called "form". Thus, this is name, and this is form. This is called "name-and-form". Among these, what is the sixth sense-base conditioned by name-and-form, caused by name-and-form? That mind, mentality, mental state... ...the mind-consciousness element born of that – this is called "the sixth sense-base conditioned by name-and-form, caused by name-and-form". Among these, what is contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base, caused by the sixth sense-base? That contact, touching, full touching, the state of having fully touched – this is called "contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base, caused by the sixth sense-base"... ...therefore it is said: "Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering." 262. At that time, formations conditioned by ignorance, caused by ignorance; consciousness conditioned by formations, caused by formations; name-and-form conditioned by consciousness, caused by consciousness; the six sense-bases conditioned by name-and-form, caused by name-and-form; contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base, caused by the sixth sense-base; feeling conditioned by contact, caused by contact; craving conditioned by feeling, caused by feeling; clinging conditioned by craving, caused by craving; existence conditioned by clinging; birth conditioned by existence; aging-and-death conditioned by birth. Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. 263. Among these, what is ignorance?
