The accumulation of the eye faculty, the accumulation of the ear faculty, the accumulation of the nose faculty, the accumulation of the tongue faculty, the accumulation of the body faculty, or whatever other form there is born of mind, caused by mind, originated by mind – this is called "form." Thus, this is name, and this is form. This is called "name-and-form conditioned by consciousness, caused by consciousness." Name-and-form conditions the six sense bases, caused by name-and-form. There is name, there is form. Therein, what is name? The feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the formations aggregate – this is called "name." Therein, what is form? The four great elements, and that form on which the mind-consciousness element depends – this is called "form." Thus, this is name, and this is form. This is called "name-and-form." Therein, what are the six sense bases conditioned by name-and-form, caused by name-and-form? The eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, the body faculty, the mind faculty – this is called "the six sense bases conditioned by name-and-form, caused by name-and-form." Therein, what is contact conditioned by the six sense bases, caused by the six sense bases? That contact, that touching, that full touching, that state of having fully touched – this is called "contact conditioned by the six sense bases, caused by the six sense bases." Therein, what is conditioned by contact Is feeling contact-caused? That mental pleasantness, mental happiness, pleasant and happy feeling born of mental contact, pleasant and happy feeling born of mental contact – this is called "feeling conditioned by contact, contact-caused." Therein, what is craving conditioned by feeling, feeling-caused? That passion, attachment…pe… attachment of mind – this is called "craving conditioned by feeling, feeling-caused." Therein, what is clinging conditioned by craving, craving-caused? That view, wrong view…pe… ground for views, perverted grasp – this is called "clinging conditioned by craving, craving-caused"…pe… therefore it is said "thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering." The Tetrad of Causes. 7. The Tetrad of Association. At that time: Ignorance-conditioned formations, associated with ignorance; Formations-conditioned consciousness, associated with formations; Consciousness-conditioned mentality, associated with consciousness; Mentality-conditioned sixth sense-base, associated with mentality; Sixth sense-base-conditioned contact, associated with the sixth sense-base; Contact-conditioned feeling, associated with contact; Feeling-conditioned craving, associated with feeling; Craving-conditioned clinging, associated with craving; Clinging-conditioned becoming; Becoming-conditioned birth; Birth-conditioned aging and death. Therein, what are formations conditioned by ignorance, associated with ignorance? That volition, intending, having intended – this is called "formations conditioned by ignorance, associated with ignorance." Therein, what is consciousness conditioned by formations, associated with formations? That mind, mentality, mental faculty…pe… that mind-consciousness element – this is called "consciousness conditioned by formations, associated with formations." Therein, what is mentality conditioned by consciousness, associated with consciousness? Therein, what is contact conjoined with the sixth sense-base, conditioned by the sixth sense-base? That which is contact, touching, full touching, the state of having fully touched – this is called 'contact conjoined with the sixth sense-base, conditioned by the sixth sense-base'. Therein, what is feeling conjoined with contact, conditioned by contact? That which is mental pleasantness, mental happiness, pleasantness and happiness born of mental contact, feeling born of mental contact, pleasant and happy feeling born of mental contact – this is called 'feeling conjoined with contact, conditioned by contact'. Therein, what is craving conjoined with feeling, conditioned by feeling? That which is passion, lust... ...the mind's lust – this is called 'craving conjoined with feeling, conditioned by feeling'. Therein, what is clinging conjoined with craving, conditioned by craving? That which is view, wrong view... ...a wrong grasp, a perverted grasp – this is called 'clinging conjoined with craving, conditioned by craving'... ...therefore it is said 'Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering'. 266. At that time, formations conjoined with ignorance, conditioned by ignorance; consciousness conjoined with formations, conditioned by formations; mentality conjoined with consciousness, conditioned by consciousness; contact conjoined with mentality, conditioned by mentality; feeling conjoined with contact, conditioned by contact; craving conjoined with feeling, conditioned by feeling; clinging conjoined with craving, conditioned by craving; becoming conditioned by clinging; birth conditioned by becoming; aging and death conditioned by birth. Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering. 267. Therein, what is ignorance? That which is not knowing, not seeing... ...the fetter of ignorance, delusion, the root of unwholesome states – this is called 'ignorance'. Therein, what What is the formation conditioned by ignorance, associated with ignorance? That volition, intending, the state of having intended – this is called 'the formation conditioned by ignorance, associated with ignorance'. Therein, what is consciousness conditioned by formations, associated with formations? That mind, mentality, mental state... and so on... the mind-consciousness element arising therefrom – this is called 'consciousness conditioned by formations, associated with formations'. Therein, what is mentality conditioned by consciousness, associated with consciousness? The aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations – this is called 'mentality conditioned by consciousness, associated with consciousness'. Contact conditioned by mentality, associated with mentality. Therein, what is mentality? Excluding contact, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations, the aggregate of consciousness – this is called 'mentality'. Therein, what is contact conditioned by mentality, associated with mentality? That contact, touching, complete touching, the state of having completely touched – this is called 'contact conditioned by mentality, associated with mentality'... and so on... therefore it is said: 'Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering'. 268. At that time, ignorance conditions formations, associated with ignorance; formations condition consciousness, associated with formations; consciousness conditions mentality-and-materiality, mentality associated with consciousness; mentality-and-materiality conditions the six sense bases, associated with mentality; the six sense bases condition contact, associated with the six sense bases; contact conditions feeling, associated with contact; feeling conditions craving, associated with feeling; craving conditions clinging, associated with craving; clinging conditions becoming; becoming conditions birth; birth conditions old age and death. Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. 269. Therein, what is ignorance?
