Thus there is the origination of this entire mass of suffering. 311. Which phenomena are indeterminate? Thus there is the origination of this entire mass of suffering. 312. Therein, what are formations? That volition, intention, the state of intending – this is called "formations"… …(similarly for) this is called "contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base". Therein, what is feeling conditioned by contact? That bodily pleasantness, bodily A pleasant feeling born of body-contact, agreeable, a pleasant feeling. An agreeable, pleasant feeling born of body-contact. This is called "feeling conditioned by contact." Therein, what is existence conditioned by feeling? Apart from feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations, the aggregate of consciousness. This is called "existence conditioned by feeling." ... Therefore it is said: "Thus arises this entire mass of suffering." 313. Which states are indeterminate? At the time when, as a result of having done and accumulated wholesome kamma in the sense-sphere, resultant mind-element has arisen, accompanied by equanimity, having as its object form, or sound, or smell, or taste, or tangible, or whatever else it may be, at that time, consciousness conditioned by formations, name conditioned by consciousness, the sixth sense-base conditioned by name, contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base, feeling conditioned by contact, determination conditioned by feeling, existence conditioned by determination, birth conditioned by existence, aging and death conditioned by birth. Thus arises this entire mass of suffering. 314. Therein, what are formations? That volition, intending, the state of having intended. This is called "formations." Therein, what is consciousness conditioned by formations? That mind, mentality, mentation... the mind-element born thereof. This is called "consciousness conditioned by formations." ... This is called "contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base." Therein, what is feeling conditioned by contact? That mental, neither agreeable nor disagreeable, feeling born of mind-contact, neither painful nor pleasant feeling. Neither painful nor pleasant feeling born of mind-contact. This is called "feeling conditioned by contact." Therein, what is determination conditioned by feeling? That determination of mind, resolution, the state of being resolved therein. This is called "determination conditioned by feeling." Therein, what is existence conditioned by determination? Apart from determination, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations, the aggregate of consciousness... ndho – this is called "existence conditioned by determination" (and so on) therefore it is said "thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering." 315. Which phenomena are indeterminate? At the time when, due to having done and accumulated wholesome kamma in the sense-sphere, the resultant mind-consciousness element has arisen, accompanied by joy, with a visible object, or with a sound object, or with an odor object, or with a taste object, or with a tangible object, or with a mind-object, or whatever else it may be based on, at that time: consciousness conditioned by formations, mentality conditioned by consciousness, the sixth sense-base conditioned by mentality, contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base, feeling conditioned by contact, determination conditioned by feeling, existence conditioned by determination, birth conditioned by existence, aging-and-death conditioned by birth. Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. 316. Therein, what is formation? That volition, intention, the state of having intended – this is called "formation." That mind, mentality, mental state (and so on) the mind-consciousness element arising therefrom – this is called "consciousness conditioned by formations" (and so on) this is called "contact conditioned by the sixth sense-base." That mental pleasantness, mental happiness, pleasant and happy feeling born of mental contact, pleasant and happy feeling born of mental contact – this is called "feeling conditioned by contact." Therein, what is determination conditioned by feeling? That determination of the mind, deciding, the state of being determined thereby – this is called "determination conditioned by feeling." Therein, what is existence conditioned by determination? Excluding determination, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations, the aggregate of consciousness – this is called "existence conditioned by determination" (and so on) therefore it is said "thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering." 317. Which phenomena are indeterminate? Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering. 318. Therein, what is volitional formation? That volition, that intending, that state of having intended – this is called "volitional formation." Therein, what is "dependent on volitional formations, consciousness"? That mind, mentality, mental state... (etc.) that mind-consciousness element born of that – this is called "dependent on volitional formations, consciousness"... (etc.) ... this is called "dependent on the sixth sense-base, contact." Therein, what is "dependent on contact, feeling"? That mental state which is neither pleasant nor unpleasant, born of mental contact, that neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, that neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling born of mental contact – this is called "dependent on contact, feeling." Therein, what is "dependent on feeling, decision"? That decision of the mind, that determining, that state of having determined – this is called "dependent on feeling, decision." Therein, what is "dependent on decision, existence"? Apart from decision, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of volitional formations, the aggregate of consciousness – this is called "dependent on decision, existence"... (etc.) ... Therefore it is said: "Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering." 319. Which phenomena are indeterminate? At the time when, due to the doing and accumulation of wholesome kamma in the sense-sphere, resultant mind-consciousness element arises, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge... (etc.) ... accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge... unaccompanied by knowledge… accompanied by joy, unaccompanied by knowledge, with prompting… accompanied by equanimity, accompanied by knowledge… accompanied by equanimity, accompanied by knowledge, with prompting… accompanied by equanimity, unaccompanied by knowledge… accompanied by equanimity, unaccompanied by knowledge, with prompting, having a visible object, or… having a mental object, or whatever object it may be, at that time, consciousness arises conditioned by volitional formations, name arises conditioned by consciousness, the sixth sense-base arises conditioned by name, contact arises conditioned by the sixth sense-base, feeling arises conditioned by contact, serenity arises conditioned by feeling, resolution arises conditioned by serenity, existence arises conditioned by resolution, birth arises conditioned by existence, aging and death arise conditioned by birth. Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. 320. What are volitional formations here? That volition, volitional activity, the state of having willed – this is called “volitional formations.” What is consciousness conditioned by volitional formations here? That mind, mentation, mental faculty… that mind-consciousness element pertaining thereto –
