are far from formations associated with painful feeling; Formations associated with pleasant feeling are far from formations associated with painful and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings; Formations associated with painful and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are far from formations associated with pleasant feeling; Formations associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling are far from formations associated with pleasant and painful feelings; Formations associated with pleasant and painful feelings are far from formations associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. Formations of one not in attainment are far from formations of one in attainment; Formations of one in attainment are far from formations of one not in attainment. Formations with taints are far from formations without taints; Formations without taints are far from formations with taints. These are called formations that are far. Among these, which are formations that are near? Unwholesome formations are near unwholesome formations; Wholesome formations are near wholesome formations; Indeterminate formations are near indeterminate formations. Formations associated with painful feeling are near formations associated with painful feeling; Formations associated with pleasant feeling are near formations associated with pleasant feeling; Formations associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling are near formations associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. Formations of one not in attainment are near formations of one not in attainment; Formations of one in attainment to one who has attained, the formations are near. Formations with taints are near to formations with taints; formations without taints are near to formations without taints. These are called formations that are near. Or, taking up those various formations, formations should be seen as far or near. 5. The Aggregate of Consciousness 26. Therein, what is the aggregate of consciousness? Whatever consciousness, past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, inferior or superior, that which is far or near, having gathered it all together, having collected it – this is called the aggregate of consciousness. 27. Therein, what is past consciousness? Whatever consciousness is past, ceased, gone, changed, set, utterly set, having arisen, gone, past, comprised in the past aspect, eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, mind-consciousness – this is called past consciousness. Therein, what is future consciousness? Whatever consciousness is unborn, unbecome, unproduced, unmanifested, unarisen, unappeared, unoriginated, unarisen, unestablished, unoriginated, future, comprised in the future aspect, eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, mind-consciousness – this is called future consciousness. Therein, what is present consciousness? Whatever consciousness is born, become, produced, manifested, arisen, appeared, originated, arisen, established, originated, present, comprised in the present aspect, eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, mind-consciousness – this is called present consciousness. 28. Therein, what is internal consciousness? Whatever consciousness, for those various beings, is internal, personal, belonging, individual, clung to, eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, mind- consciousness – this is called internal consciousness. Now, what is external consciousness? That consciousness of those other beings, other individuals, their own, personal, individual, grasped consciousness: eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, mind-consciousness – this is called external consciousness. 29. Now, what is gross and subtle consciousness? Unwholesome consciousness is gross; wholesome and indeterminate consciousnesses are subtle. Wholesome and unwholesome consciousnesses are gross; indeterminate consciousness is subtle. Consciousness associated with painful feeling is gross; consciousnesses associated with pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are subtle. Consciousnesses associated with pleasant and painful feelings are gross; consciousness associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is subtle. The consciousness of one not in absorption is gross; the consciousness of one in absorption is subtle. Consciousness with taints is gross; taintless consciousness is subtle. Or, taking this or that consciousness, consciousness should be seen as gross or subtle. 30. Now, what is inferior and superior consciousness? Unwholesome consciousness is inferior; wholesome and indeterminate consciousnesses are superior. Wholesome and unwholesome consciousnesses are inferior; indeterminate consciousness is superior. Consciousness associated with painful feeling is inferior; consciousnesses associated with pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are superior. Consciousnesses associated with pleasant and painful feelings are inferior; consciousness associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is superior. The consciousness of one not in absorption is inferior; the consciousness of one in absorption is superior. Consciousness with taints is inferior; taintless consciousness is superior. Or, taking this or that consciousness, consciousness should be seen as inferior or superior. 31. Now, what is distant consciousness? Unwholesome consciousness is distant from wholesome and indeterminate consciousnesses; wholesome and indeterminate consciousnesses are distant from unwholesome consciousness; wholesome consciousness is unwholesome Far from indeterminate consciousnesses. Unwholesome and indeterminate consciousnesses are far from wholesome consciousnesses. Indeterminate consciousness is far from wholesome and unwholesome consciousnesses. Wholesome and unwholesome consciousnesses are far from indeterminate consciousnesses. Consciousness associated with painful feeling is far from consciousnesses associated with pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings. Consciousnesses associated with pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are far from consciousnesses associated with painful feeling. Indeterminate consciousness is near indeterminate consciousness. Consciousness associated with painful feeling is near consciousness associated with painful feeling. Consciousness associated with pleasant feeling is near consciousness associated with pleasant feeling. Consciousness associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is near consciousness associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. The consciousness of one not attained is near the consciousness of one not attained. The consciousness of one attained is near the consciousness of one attained. Consciousness with defilements is near consciousness with defilements. it is near; cankerless consciousness is near cankerless consciousness – this is called consciousness being near. Or that consciousness, taking hold of consciousness again and again, should be seen as far or near. Division according to the Suttanta. 2. Division according to the Abhidhamma 32. The Five Aggregates – the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations, the aggregate of consciousness. 1. The Aggregate of Form 33. Among these, what is the aggregate of form? In one way, the aggregate of form – all form is not a root, rootless, dissociated from roots, with conditions, conditioned, form, mundane, with cankers, binding, tying, flooding, yoking, hindering, grasped, subject to clinging, defiling, indeterminate, without object, without mental factors, dissociated from consciousness, neither result nor of the nature of a result, undefiled but defiling, not with initial application and sustained application, not merely without initial application but with sustained application, without initial application and without sustained application, not accompanied by joy, not accompanied by pleasure, not accompanied by equanimity, not to be abandoned by insight nor by development, nor having a cause to be abandoned by insight nor by development, neither leading to accumulation nor to diminution, neither of a trainee nor of one beyond training, limited, belonging to the sense-sphere, not belonging to the form-sphere, not belonging to the formless-sphere, included, not excluded, undetermined, not leading to liberation, arisen, knowable by six consciousnesses, impermanent, overcome by decay. Thus, in one way, the aggregate of form. In two ways, the aggregate of form – there is form with clinging, there is form without clinging. There is form clung to,
