Homage to the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. In the Abhidhamma Piṭaka The Book of Analysis 1. Analysis of Aggregates 1. Discourse Method of Analysis 1. The five aggregates – the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations, the aggregate of consciousness. 1. The Aggregate of Form 2. Therein, what is the aggregate of form? Whatever form is past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, inferior or superior, that which is far or near, having gathered it all together, having compressed it – this is called the aggregate of form. 3. Therein, what is past form? Whatever form is past, ceased, gone, changed, set, completely set, having arisen, has vanished, past, included in the past, and the four great elements, and form derived from the four great elements – this is called past form. Therein, what is future form? Whatever form is unborn, unbecome, unproduced, unmanifested, unfully manifested, unappeared, unarisen, unoriginated, unestablished, unfully established, future, included in the future, and the four great elements, and form derived from the four great elements – this is called future form. Therein, what is present form? Whatever form is born, become, produced, manifested, fully manifested, appeared, arisen, originated, established, fully established, present, included in the present, and the four great elements, and form derived from the four great elements – this is called present form. 4. Therein, what is internal form? Whatever form of those various beings is internal, personal, belonging to oneself, individual, grasped, and the four great elements, and form derived from the four great elements – this is called internal form. Therein, what is external form? Whatever form of those various other beings, other individuals, is internal, personal, belonging to oneself, individual grasped, taken up, and the four great elements, and form derived from the four great elements – this is called external form. 5. Therein, what is gross form? The eye-base... (and so on)... the tangible-base – this is called gross form. Therein, what is subtle form? The female faculty... (and so on)... nutriment as edible food – this is called subtle form. 6. Therein, what is inferior form? That form which, for various beings, is despised, disdained, scorned, disparaged, not esteemed, inferior, considered inferior, agreed to be inferior, undesirable, unpleasant, disagreeable, (such as) visible forms, sounds, odors, tastes, tangibles – this is called inferior form. Therein, what is excellent form? That form which, for various beings, is approved, not disdained, not scorned, not disparaged, esteemed, excellent, considered excellent, agreed to be excellent, desirable, pleasant, agreeable, (such as) visible forms, sounds, odors, tastes, tangibles – this is called excellent form. Or, by taking this and that form, form should be seen as inferior or excellent. 7. Therein, what is distant form? The female faculty... (and so on)... nutriment as edible food, or whatever other form there is not near, not close, distant, not at hand – this is called distant form. Therein, what is near form? The eye-base... (and so on)... the tangible-base, or whatever other form there is near, close, not distant, at hand – this is called near form. Or, by taking this and that form, form should be seen as distant or near. 2. The Aggregate of Feeling 8. Therein, what is the aggregate of feeling? Whatever feeling there is, past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, inferior or excellent, or that which is distant or near, having gathered it all together, having compressed it – this is called the aggregate of feeling. 9. Therein, what is past feeling? That feeling which is past, ceased, gone, transformed, set, disappeared... That which has arisen and ceased, past, comprised in the aspect of the past: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling – this is called past feeling. Therein, what is future feeling? That feeling which is not born, not come into being, not arisen, not produced, not manifested, not appeared, not arisen, not fully arisen, not stood up, not fully stood up, future, comprised in the aspect of the future: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling – this is called future feeling. Therein, what is present feeling? That feeling which is born, come into being, arisen, produced, manifested, appeared, arisen, fully arisen, stood up, fully stood up, present, comprised in the aspect of the present: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling – this is called present feeling. 10. Therein, what is internal feeling? That feeling which is internal, personal, one's own, individual, grasped, of those various beings: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling – this is called internal feeling. Therein, what is external feeling? That feeling which is internal, personal, one's own, individual, grasped, of those various other beings, other individuals: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling – this is called external feeling. 11. Therein, what are gross and subtle feelings? Unwholesome feelings are gross, wholesome and indeterminate feelings are subtle. Wholesome and unwholesome feelings are gross, indeterminate feelings are subtle. Painful feelings are gross, pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are subtle. Pleasant and painful feelings are gross, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are subtle. Feelings of one not in absorption are gross, feelings of one in absorption are subtle. Tainted feelings are gross, untainted feelings are subtle. Or, taking this or that feeling, feelings are to be seen as gross or subtle. 12. Therein, what are inferior and superior feelings? Unwholesome feelings are inferior, wholesome and indeterminate feelings are superior. Wholesome and unwholesome feelings are inferior, indeterminate feelings are superior. Painful feelings are inferior, pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are superior. Pleasant-and-painful feelings are inferior, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are superior. Feelings of one not in attainment are inferior, feelings of one in attainment are superior. Feelings with influxes are inferior, feelings without influxes are superior. Or, taking each feeling in turn, feelings are to be seen as inferior or superior. 13. Therein, what feelings are far? Unwholesome feelings are far from wholesome and indeterminate feelings; wholesome and indeterminate feelings are far from unwholesome feelings; wholesome feelings are far from unwholesome and indeterminate feelings; unwholesome and indeterminate feelings are far from wholesome feelings; indeterminate feelings are far from wholesome and unwholesome feelings; wholesome and unwholesome feelings are far from indeterminate feelings. Painful feelings are far from pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings; pleasant and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are far from painful feelings; pleasant feelings are far from painful and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings; painful and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are far from pleasant feelings; neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are far from pleasant-and-painful feelings; pleasant-and-painful feelings are far from neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings. Feelings of one not in attainment are far from feelings of one in attainment; feelings of one in attainment are far from feelings of one not in attainment. Feelings with influxes are far from feelings without influxes; feelings without influxes are far from feelings with influxes – this is called feelings that are far. Therein, what feelings are near? Unwholesome feelings are near unwholesome feelings; wholesome feelings are near wholesome feelings; indeterminate feelings are near indeterminate feelings. Painful feelings are near painful feelings; pleasant feelings are near pleasant feelings; neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are near neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings. Feelings of one not in attainment are near feelings of one not in attainment; feelings of one in attainment are near feelings of one in attainment. Feelings with influxes are near feelings with influxes. This feeling is near to this feeling; Untainted feeling is near to untainted feeling. This is called feeling that is near. Or, taking this or that feeling, feeling should be seen as far or near. 3. The Aggregate of Perception 14. Therein, what is the aggregate of perception? Whatever perception, past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, inferior or superior, that which is far or near, having gathered it all together, having collected it all – this is called the aggregate of perception. 15. Therein, what is past perception? Whatever perception is past, ceased, gone, changed, set, completely set, having arisen and vanished, past, included in the past aspect, perception born of eye-contact, perception born of ear-contact, perception born of nose-contact, perception born of tongue-contact, perception born of body-contact, perception born of mind-contact – this is called past perception. Therein, what is future perception? Whatever perception is unborn, unbecome, unproduced, unmanifested, unappeared, unarisen, unoriginated, unestablished, unoriginated, future, included in the future aspect, perception born of eye-contact, perception born of ear-contact, perception born of nose-contact, perception born of tongue-contact, perception born of body-contact, perception born of mind-contact – this is called future perception.
