The Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death, this alone is true, anything else is foolish, or; The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death, this alone is true, anything else is foolish, or; whatever such a view, a view-gone, a view-thicket, a view-wilderness, a view-agitation, a view-struggle, a view-fetter, a grasping, a holding fast, an adherence, a clinging, a wrong path, a false path, a wrongness, a heretical ground, a perverted grasping – this is called the bodily knot of insistence on 'this is the truth'. Excluding the bodily knot of clinging to moral practices and vows, all wrong views are the bodily knot of insistence on 'this is the truth'. These phenomena are knots. 1145. Which phenomena are not knots? Excluding those phenomena, the remaining wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate phenomena, belonging to the sense-sphere, form-sphere, formless-sphere, and unincluded; the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations, the aggregate of consciousness; and all form, and the unconditioned element – these phenomena are not knots. 1146. Which phenomena are bound by knots? With taints, wholesome, unwholesome, indeterminate. The states that are of the sense-sphere, of the form-sphere, of the formless-sphere; the form aggregate… …the consciousness aggregate – these states are bound by fetters. 1147. Which states are not bound by fetters? The paths not included, and the fruits of the path, and the unconditioned element – these states are not bound by fetters. 1148. Which states are associated with fetters? Those states that are associated with these states: the feeling aggregate… …the consciousness aggregate – these states are associated with fetters. 1149. Which states are dissociated from fetters? Those states that are dissociated from these states: the feeling aggregate… …the consciousness aggregate, and all form, and the unconditioned element – these states are dissociated from fetters. 1150. Which states are fetters and also bound by fetters? Those very fetters are fetters and also bound by fetters. 1151. Which states are bound by fetters but are not fetters? Those states that are bound by fetters, excluding those states, the remaining defiled states, wholesome, unwholesome, indeterminate, of the sense-sphere, of the form-sphere, of the formless-sphere; the form aggregate… …the consciousness aggregate – these states are bound by fetters but are not fetters. 1152. Which states are fetters and also associated with fetters? The bodily fetter of attachment to rites and rituals is a fetter and associated with fetters through the bodily fetter of covetousness; the bodily fetter of covetousness is a fetter and associated with fetters through the bodily fetter of attachment to rites and rituals; the bodily fetter of adherence to "this is the truth" is a fetter and associated with fetters through the bodily fetter of covetousness; the bodily fetter of covetousness is a fetter and associated with fetters through the bodily fetter of adherence to "this is the truth" – these states are fetters and also associated with fetters. 1153. Which states are associated with fetters but are not fetters? Those states that are associated with these states, excluding those states: the feeling aggregate… …the consciousness aggregate – these states are associated with fetters but are not fetters. 1154. Which states are dissociated from fetters, yet bound by fetters? Those states that are dissociated from these states, Those defiled, wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate phenomena belonging to the sense-sphere, form-sphere, formless-sphere; the form aggregate... (and so on)... the consciousness aggregate – these phenomena are unbound by fetters, yet conducive to fetters. 1155. Which phenomena are unbound by fetters and not conducive to fetters? The paths not included (in the rounds of existence), and their fruits, and the unconditioned element – these phenomena are unbound by fetters and not conducive to fetters. Flood Cluster 1156. Which phenomena are floods? The four floods... (and so on)... these phenomena are unbound by floods, yet conducive to floods. Yoke Cluster 1157. Which phenomena are yokes? The four yokes... (and so on)... these phenomena are unbound by yokes, yet conducive to yokes. Hindrance Cluster 1158. Which phenomena are hindrances? The six hindrances – the hindrance of sensual desire, the hindrance of ill-will, the hindrance of sloth and torpor, the hindrance of restlessness and remorse, the hindrance of doubt, the hindrance of ignorance. 1159. Therein, what is the hindrance of sensual desire? That sensual desire for sense-objects, sensual lust, sensual delight, sensual craving, sensual affection, sensual fever, sensual infatuation, sensual clinging – this is called the hindrance of sensual desire. 1160. Therein, what is the hindrance of ill-will? 'He did me harm' – thus resentment arises; 'He is doing me harm' – thus resentment arises; 'He will do me harm' – thus resentment arises; 'He did harm to my dear and beloved one'... (and so on)... 'He is doing harm'... 'He will do harm' – thus resentment arises; 'He did good to my disliked and unpleasant one'... (and so on)... 'He is doing good'... 'He will do good' – thus resentment arises; or resentment arises without cause. Whatever such mental resentment, aversion, hostility, opposition, anger, intense anger, extreme anger, hatred, malice, intense malice, mental affliction, mental defilement, wrath, being enraged, the state of being enraged, malevolence, being hostile, the state of being hostile, ill-will, being malicious, the state of being malicious, antagonism, strong antagonism, ferocity, sourness, mental displeasure – this is called the hindrance of ill-will. 1161. Therein, what is sloth and torpor hindrance? There is sloth, there is torpor. 1162. Therein, what is sloth? That which is the mind's unfitness, unworkability, sinking, shrinking, inertness, inertness, being inert, sloth, slothfulness, being slothful of the mind – this is called sloth. 1163. Therein, what is torpor? That which is the body's unfitness, unworkability, sluggishness, enveloping sluggishness, internal obstruction, torpor, sleepiness, drowsiness, sleep, sleeping, being asleep – this is called torpor. Thus, this sloth, and this torpor – this is called the hindrance of sloth and torpor. 1164. Therein, what is the hindrance of restlessness and remorse? There is restlessness, there is remorse. 1165. Therein, what is restlessness? That which is the mind's restlessness, uncalmness, mental distraction, agitation of the mind – this is called restlessness. 1166. Therein, what is remorse? Perception of what is improper as proper, perception of what is proper as improper, perception of what is blameless as blameworthy, perception of what is blameworthy as blameless. That which is such remorse, regretting, being regretful, mental regret, mental vexation – this is called remorse. Thus, this restlessness, and this remorse – this is called the hindrance of restlessness and remorse. 1167. Therein, what is the hindrance of doubt? Doubt about the Teacher, wavering about the Teacher; doubt about the Dhamma, wavering about the Dhamma; doubt about the Saṅgha, wavering about the Saṅgha; doubt about the training, wavering about the training; doubt about the past, wavering about the past; doubt about the future, wavering about the future; doubt about the past and future, wavering about the past and future; doubt about dependent origination, wavering about dependently arisen phenomena. That which is such doubt, doubting, being doubtful, indecision, uncertainty, perplexity, a fork in the road, wavering, grasping at many sides, groping, wandering, not penetrating, mental stiffness, mental vexation – this is called the hindrance of doubt. 1168. Therein, what is the hindrance of ignorance? Ignorance of suffering, ignorance of the origin of suffering, igno Ignorance concerning the cessation of suffering, Ignorance concerning the path leading to the cessation of suffering, Ignorance concerning the past, Ignorance concerning the future, Ignorance concerning both past and future, Ignorance concerning dependent origination, the states arisen from specific conditions: Such ignorance, not seeing, not understanding, not comprehending, not awakening, not penetrating, not grasping, not pervading, not observing, not reviewing, not realizing, dullness, foolishness, lack of clear comprehension, delusion, great delusion, utter delusion, ignorance, the flood of ignorance, the yoke of ignorance, the latent tendency of ignorance, the obsession of ignorance, the fetter of ignorance, delusion, the root of unwholesome states – this is called the hindrance of ignorance. These states are hindrances. 1169. Which states are not hindrances? Apart from those states, the remaining wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate states belonging to the sense-sphere, form-sphere, formless-sphere, and transcendent; the aggregate of feeling... up to... the aggregate of consciousness; and all form, and the unconditioned element – these states are not hindrances. 1170. Which states are subject to hindrances? The defiled wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate states belonging to the sense-sphere, form-sphere, formless-sphere; the aggregate of form... up to... the aggregate of consciousness – these states are subject to hindrances. 1171. Which states are not subject to hindrances? The transcendent paths, and their fruits, and the unconditioned element – these states are not subject to hindrances. 1172. Which states are associated with hindrances?
