These are the three wholesome roots. 1077. Therein, which are the three indeterminate roots? Non-greed, non-hatred, non-delusion, as the result of wholesome phenomena – these are the three indeterminate roots. These are the six unincluded roots – these phenomena are roots. 1078. Which phenomena are not roots? Apart from those phenomena, the remaining wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate phenomena, belonging to the sense-sphere, belonging to the form-sphere, belonging to the formless-sphere, and unincluded; the aggregate of feeling... ...the aggregate of consciousness; and all r All form, and the unconditioned element – these phenomena are not roots. Greed is a root and rooted with delusion, delusion is a root and rooted with greed, hatred is a root and rooted with delusion, delusion is a root and rooted with hatred; non-greed, non-hatred, non-delusion, they are mutually roots and rooted – these phenomena are both roots and rooted. Those phenomena which are rooted, excluding those phenomena (which are roots): the feeling aggregate... and so on... the consciousness aggregate – these phenomena are rooted but not roots. Those very phenomena which are conditioned, those very phenomena are formed. 1092. Which phenomena are unformed? That very phenomenon which is unconditioned, that very phenomenon is unformed. 1093. Which phenomena are visible? The visible form base – these phenomena are visible. 1094. Which phenomena are invisible? Which phenomena are supramundane? The paths not included, and their fruits, and the unconditioned element – these phenomena are supramundane. 1101. Which phenomena are knowable by some, and not knowable by others? Those phenomena knowable by the eye, are not knowable by the ear; or those phenomena knowable by the ear, are not knowable by the eye. Those phenomena knowable by the eye, are not knowable by the nose; or those phenomena knowable by the nose, are not knowable by the eye. Those phenomena knowable by the eye, are not knowable by the tongue; or those phenomena knowable by the tongue, are not knowable by the eye. There are four taints: the taint of sensual desire, the taint of existence, the taint of views, the taint of ignorance. 1103. Among these, what is the taint of sensual desire? That which is sensual desire for sensual pleasures, sensual passion, delight in sensual pleasures, craving for sensual pleasures, attachment to sensual pleasures, burning with sensual pleasures, infatuation with sensual pleasures, obsession with sensual pleasures— this is called the taint of sensual desire. 1104. Among these, what is the taint of existence? That which is desire for existence, passion for existence, delight in existence, craving for existence, attachment to existence, burning with existence, infatuation with existence, obsession with existence— this is called the taint of existence. 1105.
