That which at that time is mental pleasantness, mental happiness, pleasantness born of mental contact, happiness felt, pleasant and happy feeling born of mental contact— this is the faculty of joy at that time. 482. What is the life-faculty at that time? That which at that time is the life, stability, maintenance, sustenance, movement, continuance, preservation, vitality, life-faculty of those immaterial phenomena— this is the life-faculty at that time. there is the faculty of life; or whatever other formless states are dependently arisen at that time— these states are indeterminate. At that time, there are four aggregates, there are two bases, there are two elements, there are three nutriments, there are three faculties, there is one contact… and so on… there is one mind-consciousness element, there is one mind-object base, there is one mind-object element; or whatever other formless states are dependently arisen at that time— these states are indeterminate… and so on…. 483. What is the aggregate of formations at that time? Contact, volition, initial application, sustained application, joy, one-pointedness of mind, faculty of life; or whatever other formless states are dependently arisen at that time, excluding the aggregate of feeling, excluding the aggregate of perception, excluding the aggregate of consciousness— this is the aggregate of formations at that time… and so on… these states are indeterminate. The mind-consciousness element, the result of wholesome kamma, accompanied by joy. The mind-consciousness element, the result of wholesome kamma, accompanied by equanimity. 484. Which states are indeterminate? When, due to the performance and accumulation of wholesome kamma in the sense-sphere, a mind-consciousness element, the result of kamma, has arisen, accompanied by equanimity, having a visible object… and so on… or having a mind-object… or having whatever other object, at that time there is contact, there is feeling, there is perception, there is volition, there is mind, there is initial application, there is sustained application, there is equanimity, there is one-pointedness of mind, there is the faculty of mind, there is the faculty of equanimity, there is the faculty of life; or whatever other formless states are dependently arisen at that time— these states are indeterminate. 485. What is contact at that time? Whatever contact, touching, complete touching, the state of having completely touched at that time— this is contact at that time. 486. What is feeling at that time? Whatever mental feeling, born of the contact of that mind-consciousness element, which is neither pleasant nor unplea that feeling born of mental contact, neither painful nor pleasant, the neither painful nor pleasant feeling born of mental contact— this is the feeling at that time. 487. What is perception at that time? That perception at that time, cognition, the state of having cognized, born of contact with the corresponding mind-consciousness element— this is perception at that time. 488. What is volition at that time? That volition at that time, intention, the state of having intended, born of contact with the corresponding mind-consciousness element— this is volition at that time. 489. What is consciousness at that time? That consciousness at that time, mind, mentality, heart, purity, mind, mind-base, mind-faculty, consciousness, the aggregate of consciousness, the corresponding mind-consciousness element— this is consciousness at that time. 490. What is initial application at that time? That initial application at that time, thought, conception, fixation, application, the directing of the mind onto— this is initial application at that time. 491. What is sustained application at that time? That sustained application at that time, reflection, investigation, repeated investigation, close investigation, the continued pondering of the mind, the continued observation— this is sustained application at that time. 492. What is equanimity at that time? That mental state at that time, neither agreeable nor disagreeable, the neither painful nor pleasant feeling born of mental contact, the neither painful nor pleasant feeling born of mental contact— this is equanimity at that time. 493. What is one-pointedness of mind at that time? That steadfastness of mind at that time— this is one-pointedness of mind at that time. 494. What is the mind-faculty at that time? That consciousness at that time, mind, mentality, heart, purity, mind, mind-base, mind-faculty, consciousness, the aggregate of consciousness, the corresponding mind-consciousness element— this is the mind-faculty at that time. 495. What is the faculty of equanimity at that time? That mental state at that time, neither agreeable nor disagreeable, born of mental contact, Feeling that is neither pain nor pleasure, the neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling born of mental contact— this is the faculty of equanimity at that time. 496. What is the faculty of life at that time? The life, duration, maintenance, sustenance, activity, continuance, preservation, vitality, and faculty of life of those formless phenomena— this is the faculty of life at that time; or whatever other formless phenomena, dependently arisen, exist at that time— these phenomena are indeterminate. At that time, there are four aggregates, there are two sense bases, there are two elements, there are three nutriments, there are three faculties, there is one contact…and so on… there is one mind-consciousness element, there is one mind-object base, there is one mind-object element; or whatever other formless phenomena, dependently arisen, exist at that time— these phenomena are indeterminate…and so on…. 497. What is the aggregate of volitional formations at that time? Contact, volition, initial application, sustained application, one-pointedness of mind, the faculty of life; or whatever other formless phenomena, dependently arisen, exist at that time, apart from the aggregate of feeling, apart from the aggregate of perception, apart from the aggregate of consciousness— this is the aggregate of volitional formations at that time…and so on… these phenomena are indeterminate. The mind-consciousness element, result of wholesome kamma, accompanied by equanimity. Eight Great Results 498. What phenomena are indeterminate? When, as a result of having done and accumulated wholesome kamma in the sense-sphere, a mind-consciousness element has arisen, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge…and so on… accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, with prompting…and so on… accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge…and so on… accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting…and so on… accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge…and so on… accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge, with prompting…and so on… accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge…and so on… accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting, having a form-object or…and so on… having a mind-object, whatever or with reference to which, at that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are indeterminate, ... non-greed is an indeterminate root, ... non-hatred is an indeterminate root, ... these phenomena are indeterminate. Eight Great Results. Form-sphere Results 499. Which phenomena are indeterminate? At the time when one develops the path to rebirth in the form-sphere, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, ... having entered and dwells in the first jhāna, with the earth kasina, at that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are wholesome. As a result of that very wholesome kamma of the form-sphere, having been done and accumulated, the result is: quite secluded from sensual pleasures, ... having entered and dwells in the first jhāna, with the earth kasina, at that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are indeterminate. 500. Which phenomena are indeterminate? At the time when one develops the path to rebirth in the form-sphere, with the fading away of initial and sustained application, ... the second jhāna, ... the third jhāna, ... the fourth jhāna, ... the first jhāna, ... having entered and dwells in the fifth jhāna, with the earth kasina, at that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are wholesome. As a result of that very wholesome kamma of the form-sphere, having been done and accumulated, the result is: with the abandoning of pleasure, ... having entered and dwells in the fifth jhāna, with the earth kasina, at that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are indeterminate. Form-sphere Results. Formless-sphere Results 501. Which phenomena are indeterminate? At the time when one develops the path to rebirth in the formless-sphere, by completely transcending perceptions of form, by the disappearance of perceptions of sensory impact, by not attending to perceptions of diversity, accompanied by the perception of the infinitude of space, with the abandoning of pleasure, ... having entered and dwells in the fourth jhāna, at that time there is contact, ... there is non-distraction, ... these phenomena are wholesome. As a result of that very wholesome kamma of the formless-sphere, having been done and accumulated, the result is: by completely transcending perceptions of form... by the gradual fading of perception of resistance, by the non-attention to perceptions of diversity, he enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna, accompanied by the perception of the infinitude of space, and by the abandoning of pleasure…pe… at that time there is contact…pe… there is non-distraction…pe… these phenomena are indeterminate. 502.
