He is shameless, and foolish, and unreformed, and he is quarrelsome, a stirrer of disputes, and he is not a fulfiller of the training. Indeed, Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities should not give admonition to bhikkhunīs. 453. “By how many qualities, venerable sir, should a bhikkhunī not accept admonition from a bhikkhu?” “Upāli, a bhikkhunī should not accept admonition from a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities. Which five? He is endowed with bodily misconduct, he is endowed with verbal misconduct, he is endowed with bodily and verbal misconduct, he is an abuser and reviler of bhikkhunīs, he dwells in improper association with bhikkhunīs. Indeed, Upāli, a bhikkhunī should not accept admonition from a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities. Again, Upāli, Upāli, a monk endowed with five qualities should not give advice to bhikkhunis. Which five? He is shameless, and foolish, and not well-behaved, or he is a traveler, or he is sick – With these five qualities, Upāli, a monk should not give advice to bhikkhunis. 454. “With how many qualities, venerable sir, should one not converse with a monk?” “With five qualities, Upāli, one should not converse with a monk. Which five? He is not endowed with the perfected segment of virtue, not endowed with the perfected segment of concentration, not endowed with the perfected segment of wisdom, not endowed with the perfected segment of liberation, not endowed with the perfected segment of knowledge and vision of liberation – With these five qualities, Upāli, one should not converse with a monk. With five qualities, Upāli, one should converse with a monk. Which five? He is endowed with the perfected segment of virtue, endowed with the perfected segment of concentration, endowed with the perfected segment of wisdom, endowed with the perfected segment of liberation, endowed with the perfected segment of knowledge and vision of liberation – With these five qualities, Upāli, one should converse with a monk. “Furthermore, Upāli, with five other qualities, one should not converse with a monk. He has not attained analytical knowledge of meaning, not attained analytical knowledge of phenomena, not attained analytical knowledge of language, not attained analytical knowledge of ready wit, and does not review his mind as it is liberated – With these five qualities, Upāli, one should not converse with a monk. He has attained analytical knowledge of meaning, he has attained analytical knowledge of Dhamma, he has attained analytical knowledge of language, he has attained analytical knowledge of ready wit, he reviews his mind as it is liberated – With a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities, Upāli, one should converse.” The Chapter on Admonishing Bhikkhunis, the eighth, is finished. He is angry, overcome by anger, he is resentful, overcome by resentment, he is envious, overcome by envy, he is jealous, overcome by jealousy, he clings to his own views, is obstinate, and difficult to let go – With these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not be appointed to the committee for decisions. He is not angry, not overcome by anger, he is not resentful, not overcome by resent... called upon, he is not envious, not overwhelmed by envy, he is not jealous, not overwhelmed by jealousy, he does not cling to views, he does not grasp at what is laid down, he readily relinquishes – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities should be appointed to the Ubbāhikā. He gets angry, he becomes ill-willed, he becomes obstinate, he generates anger, he is not patient, he takes instruction in the wrong way – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities should not be appointed to the Ubbāhikā. Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities should be appointed to the Ubbāhikā. Which five? He does not get angry, he does not become ill-willed, he does not become obstinate, he does not generate anger, he is patient, he takes instruction in the right way – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities should be appointed to the Ubbāhikā. And further, Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities should not be appointed to the Ubbāhikā. Which five? He goes on the path of desire, ill-will... goes by partiality, goes by delusion, goes by fear, and is shameless – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities should not be appointed to the Ubbāhikā. He does not go by desire, he does not go by hatred, he does not go by delusion, he does not go by fear, and he is conscientious – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities should be appointed to the Ubbāhikā. He does not know the Sutta, he does not know what accords with the Sutta, he does not know the Vinaya, he does not know what accords with the Vinaya, and he is not skilled in what is proper and improper – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities is reckoned as a fool. Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities is reckoned as a wise person. Which five? He knows the Sutta, he knows what accords with the Sutta, he knows the Vinaya, he knows what accords with the Vinaya, and he is skilled in what is proper and improper – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities that bhikkhu is reckoned as wise. ‘‘Again, Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities is reckoned as foolish. Which five? He does not know the Dhamma, he knows what accords with the Dhamma, he does not know the Vinaya, he does not know what accords with the Vinaya, and he is not skilled in sequence and consequence – with these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu is reckoned as foolish. With five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu is reckoned as wise. Which five? He knows the Dhamma, he knows what accords with the Dhamma, he knows the Vinaya, he knows what accords with the Vinaya, and he is skilled in sequence and consequence – with these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu is reckoned as wise. ‘‘Again, Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities is reckoned as foolish. Which five? He does not know the case, he does not know the origin, he does not know the designation, he does not know the re-application of terms, he does not know the connected discourse – with these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu is reckoned as foolish.
