Upāli's Fives 1. The Chapter on Not Being Dependent 417. At that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Then indeed, the venerable Upāli approached the Blessed One; having approached, and having saluted the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the venerable Upāli said this to the Blessed One: "By how many factors, Venerable Sir, should a bhikkhu, endowed with them, dwell not dependent for life?" "Upāli, by five factors should a bhikkhu, endowed with them, dwell not dependent for life. Which five? He does not know the Uposatha, he does not know the Uposatha ceremony, he does not know the Pātimokkha, he does not know the recitation of the Pātimokkha, he is less than five years ordained – By these five factors, Upāli, should a bhikkhu, endowed with them, dwell not dependent for life. Upāli, by five factors should a bhikkhu, endowed with them, dwell independent for life. Which five? He knows the Uposatha, he knows the Uposatha ceremony, he knows the Pātimokkha, he knows the recitation of the Pātimokkha, he is five years ordained or more than five years ordained – By these five factors, Upāli, should a bhikkhu, endowed with them, dwell independent for life. "Again, Upāli, by five factors should a bhikkhu, endowed with them, dwell not dependent for life. Which five? He does not know offense and non-offense, he does not know light and heavy offense, he does not know remaining and non-remaining offense, he does not know gross and not gross offense, he is less than five years (ordained) – With these five qualities, Upāli, a monk should not dwell independently for as long as he lives. Upāli, a monk endowed with five qualities should dwell independently for as long as he lives. Which five? He knows offense and non-offense, he knows light and heavy offense, he knows remaining and non-remaining offense, he knows gross and not gross offense, he is five years (ordained) or more than five years – With these five qualities, Upāli, a monk should dwell independently for as long as he lives. 418. "By how many qualities, indeed, Venerable Sir, should a monk not give ordination, not give dependence, not have a novice attend him?" Upāli, a monk endowed with five qualities should not give ordination, not give dependence, not have a novice attend him. Which five? He is not capable of attending or having attended a sick pupil or co-resident, of settling or having settled one who is discontent, of dispelling an arisen remorse according to the Dhamma, of training in the higher Dhamma, of training in the higher Discipline – With these five qualities, Upāli, a monk should not give ordination, not give dependence, not have a novice attend him. Upāli, a monk endowed with five qualities should give ordination, should give dependence, should have a novice attend him. Which f... What five? He is capable of attending to or having attended to a sick pupil or co-resident, of settling or having settled one who is discontent, of dispelling by Dhamma any arisen remorse, of training in the higher Dhamma, of training in the higher Discipline— with these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu should give ordination, should give reliance, should have a novice attended to. And with these other five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not give ordination, should not give reliance, should not have a novice attended to. What five? He is not capable of training a pupil or co-resident in the training of good conduct, of training in the training of the beginning of the holy life, of training in higher virtue, of training in higher mind, of training in higher wisdom— with these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not give ordination, should not give reliance, should not have a novice attended to. With five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu should give ordination, should give reliance, should have a novice attended to. What five? He is capable of training a pupil or co-resident in the training of good conduct, of training in the training of the beginning of the holy life, of training in higher virtue, of training in higher mind, of training in higher wisdom— with these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu should give ordination, should give reliance, should have a novice attended to. “With how many qualities, venerable sir, should an act be performed for a bhikkhu?” With five qualities, Upāli, should an act be performed for a bhikkhu. What five? He is shameless, and foolish, and unrepentant, and holds wrong view, and is corrupt in livelihood— with these five qualities, Upāli, should an act be performed for a bhikkhu. And with these other five qualities, Upāli, should an act be performed for a bhikkhu. By which five? He is deficient in higher virtue, he is deficient in conduct, he is deficient in view, and he has wrong view, and he is deficient in livelihood – With these five factors, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu. And again, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu endowed with five factors. By which five? He is endowed with bodily violence, he is endowed with verbal violence, he is endowed with bodily and verbal violence, and he has wrong view, and he is deficient in livelihood – With these five factors, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu. And again, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu endowed with five factors. By which five? He is endowed with bodily misconduct, he is endowed with verbal misconduct, he is endowed with bodily and verbal misconduct, and he has wrong view, and he is deficient in livelihood – With these five factors, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu. And again, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu endowed with five factors. By which five? He is endowed with bodily harm, he is endowed with verbal harm, he is endowed with bodily and verbal harm, and he has wrong view, and he is deficient in livelihood – With these five factors, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu. And again, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu endowed with five factors. By which five? He is endowed with bodily wrong livelihood, he is endowed with verbal wrong livelihood, he is endowed with bodily and verbal wrong livelihood, and he has wrong view, and he is deficient in livelihood – With these five factors, Upāli, action should be taken against a bhikkhu. And again, Upāli, endowed with five factors A bhikkhu should be subjected to a disciplinary act. By which five? Having fallen into an offense, being subject to a disciplinary act, he gives ordination, he gives dependence, he attends to a novice, he accepts the appointment to admonish bhikkhunīs, and even when appointed, he admonishes bhikkhunīs – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five factors should be subjected to a disciplinary act. "Again, Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with five factors should be subjected to a disciplinary act. By which five? He commits the offense for which the Saṅgha has performed a disciplinary act, or another similar one, or one worse than that, he disparages the disciplinary act, he disparages those who performed the act – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five factors should be subjected to a disciplinary act. "Again, Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with five factors should be subjected to a disciplinary act. By which five? He speaks dispraise of the Buddha, he speaks dispraise of the Dhamma, he speaks dispraise of the Saṅgha, and he holds wrong view, and he is corrupt in livelihood – Upāli, a bhikkhu endowed with these five factors should be subjected to a disciplinary act." The first chapter on Non-Dependence is finished. Its summary – Uposatha, Pavāraṇā, and offense, and sickness; Proper conduct, shame, and in higher morality, with dispute. Misconduct, harming, wrong, and offense itself; By which offense, of the Buddha, is the first collection of chapters. 2. The Chapter on Not Being Revoked 420. "By how many factors, venerable sir, should a disciplinary act performed on a bhikkhu not be revoked?" "Upāli, a disciplinary act performed on a bhikkhu endowed with five factors should not be revoked. By which five? Having fallen into an offense, being subject to a disciplinary act, he gives ordination, he gives dependence, he attends to a novice, he accepts the appointment to admonish bhikkhunīs, and even when appointed, he admonishes bhikkhunīs – Upāli, a disciplinary act performed on a bhikkhu endowed with these five factors should not be revoked. "Again, Also, Upāli, for a bhikkhu endowed with five factors, his act should not be revoked. Which five?
