They conveyed the message slowly to those who were arrogant, thus subduing them. The one hundred and nineteenth section, concerning the cremation of the relics: Afterwards, when dawn arrived, Mahakashyapa urged Ananda to go to Kushinagara, gathering about five hundred strong men, saying, "Last night at midnight, the Teacher has passed into Nirvana. You should complete the tasks to be done and make offerings." The strong men fell into sorrow, holding flowers and incense and other various offerings, and came to offer to the relics. The strong men asked, "How should we offer to the Tathagata's relics with cremation and so on?" Ananda replied, "It should be done as the body of a Chakravartin King is treated, and it must be done in this and that way." The strong men said, "Since it cannot be completed in two or three days, let's do it after seven days." So, the strong men made many offerings each day. Other gods and humans also made immeasurable offerings. After seven days, various implements were also prepared. From the Sala Grove to the city of Kushinagara, and all the streets of Kushinagara, from Kushinagara to the stupa where the strong men hung their headdresses, all the roads were swept clean. Decorated with banners, streamers, and various flags, flowers and incense and other various offerings were displayed. Just as the body of a Chakravartin King is treated, the relics were placed on a precious throne with great reverence, and decorated with umbrellas and garlands and so on. The wives of the strong men held up the curtains, the young men lifted the throne, and the strong men walked holding garlands and other offerings. When the relic throne was lifted, it could not be moved even slightly. Mahakashyapa, after observing, understood the thoughts of the gods, and said, "Do as the gods wish." So, the wives of the strong men held up the curtains, the young men lifted the throne, and the gods made offerings from above and below the relics. The main strong men completed all these preparations, lifting the relics from the Sala Grove, entering from the west gate of the city of Kushinagara, passing through the center of the street, and exiting from the east gate.

He was invited to the stupa adorned with the crown of the chief of giants. There, the gods rained down Mandarava flowers, and the scattered flowers piled up from the twin Sala trees to the stupa, reaching a height that submerged the knees. There, the giants, wishing to make offerings to the Tathagata's relics, covered the relics with cottonwood leaves, wrapped them with five hundred pieces of the finest cloth, placed them in an iron box, filled it with fragrant sesame oil, placed it on top of a pile of fragrant wood, and began to light a fire, but were unable to ignite it. Because it could not be ignited, they investigated with clairvoyance, and the gods also said: No one can light the Buddha's relics until the Venerable Kashyapa has seen them. They informed the giants and waited a little while. At that time, the Venerable Kashyapa, accompanied by a retinue of five hundred monks, came to see the relics of the Blessed One. When they arrived in the sinful land, they met a resident who was holding a heavenly flower. When asked, he said: The ascetic Gautama has passed away into Nirvana for seven days, and this is a flower offered to his relics. Hearing this, an old man said: Ascetics, what should I do? What should not be done? Be liberated from what can be done, do what can be done, and do not do what cannot be done. When he said this, the gods obscured the sound so that no one except Kashyapa could hear it. Kashyapa subdued and disciplined the old man with the Dharma, and guided the five hundred monks to the Dharma with the teaching of impermanence. At the time when the giants were unable to light the fire, the Venerable Kashyapa and his retinue also came to the place of the stupa adorned with the crown of the chief of giants. There, they opened the relic box, gazed intently at the undamaged relics, and prostrated themselves. At that time, there were four great Shravakas near the relics: Kaundinya, Erka, Kashyapa with the ten powers, and the Venerable Kashyapa. At that time, because the Venerable Kashyapa had the power of merit, five hundred more pieces of the finest cloth arrived, joining the previous ones.

After being wrapped in a thousand silk cloths and a thousand Dharma robes, it was still placed in the reliquary. When the people retreated slightly, the fire ignited by itself. Not long after, it was known that the remains had been cremated. The giants poured milk and perfume from precious vases, extinguished the embers of the fire, and opened the reliquary. It is said that except for the four teeth, all the relics had turned into a pile like mustard seeds. All the other things wrapped in a thousand silk cloths and about a thousand Dharma robes were burned, and there was not even ash. The Dharma robes wrapped inside the body, and the Dharma robes covering everything outside, were not burned at all, nor were they soaked in oil, nor were they stained, but remained as they were. At the moment when the fire was extinguished with milk, four trees with many flowers grew instantly from the ashes of the remains: the golden acacia, the horse chestnut, the yellow flower, and the udumbara. There, Ananda also specifically recited verses. The relics were placed in golden vases, placed on precious palanquins, and placed on a high platform in a very spacious place in the center of the city of Kushinagar, where people offered many offerings. The one hundred and twentieth division of the relics into eight parts was when the giants of the sinful land, seven days after the passing of the Buddha, and after the cremation of the remains, fully armed, came near the city of Kushinagar and said to the giants of Kushinagar: The Blessed One has long been a source of sorrow and regret for us. He passed into Nirvana near your city. Now, please give us a share of the relics (Tibetan: གདུང་ཤཱ་རི་རཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: śarīra, Sanskrit Romanization: sharira, Chinese literal meaning: body). We will build a stupa in our country and hold festivals. The people of Kushinagar did not agree. If you do not give it, we will seize it by war. Thus, the dispute became intense. Furthermore, the royal family of Uluka, residing in the land of shaking thought, and the royal family of Rantaka, residing in the land of sound, as well as the Brahmins of the realm of Vishnu, and the Shakyas of Kapilavastu, and the Licchavis of Vaishali, also came with armies, as before.

In the past, just as the great protector of light had taught, the Brahmin Summer Maker also did so, and thus the king awoke from his faint and felt somewhat comfortable. When he heard that others had gone to collect the relics, he said, "I will also go," and deployed his troops. When he mounted an elephant and prepared to leave, he remembered the Blessed One and fainted again, falling to the ground. When he awoke again, he mounted a horse and prepared to leave, but the same thing happened. The king was unable to go, so he sent the Brahmin Summer Maker and his army, saying the same words as before. They saw many armies gathered on the way, and even the wives, young men, and girls of the giants in the grasslands were learning archery and other skills. At that time, there was a Brahmin named "Equal to a Measure," who was virtuous, had dignified speech, always had a virtuous nature, was upright, and wise. He realized that if they fought each other, many people would be killed, so he went to each of the eight tribes, including the giants in the grasslands, and said, "Listen, wise ones. The Blessed One has long been endowed with patience and praised patience, so it is not appropriate to kill each other for his relics. I will divide the relics into eight parts. Please give me the container in which the relics are kept, and I will build a stupa in the city and make offerings." He said this to each of them separately. Everyone calmed their hatred, reached a consensus, and agreed. Then, the Brahmin divided the relics equally into eight parts and gave them to each of them. The relic box or vase was taken by the Brahmin Equal to a Measure. The relic ashes were taken by the Brahmin of Nyagrodha, and they each invited the relics with great respect and built stupas in their respective lands. The first tooth is in the land of the Thirty-Three Gods, the second is in the land of Dhritarashtra, and the third is in Kalinga. The fourth tooth and one relic were obtained by the Sounder, but were stolen by the Nagas and are now in the land of the Nagas. The other seven parts are in their respective lands. Thus: Of the eight measures of relics of the one with eyes, seven were obtained by the people of Jambudvipa for offering. One measure of that supreme being
