If they cannot, I will do it myself, thinking thus, he himself also held a sharp sword, stayed in one place, and observed and patrolled in all directions. At that time, the five hundred teachers of illusion wheels asked, 'To whom shall we throw?' They replied, 'Throw at Gautama.' They thought, 'It is easier to die that way.' Devadatta sought a path that could not be seen. Although the other side of the mountain was a cliff, the Teacher conjured a ladder or steps there, allowing the five hundred people to escape. The teacher of illusion wheels also carried a pearl necklace and followed after them. When they came before the Teacher, the Teacher taught them the Dharma, and all saw the truth, and were placed on the foundation of refuge and precepts. Devadatta waited and looked again and again, but did not throw the stone. He himself led the five hundred people up the mountain and arrived at the place where the stone was placed, but the teacher of illusion wheels had also fled. He saw that the five hundred people were listening to the Dharma, and he was even more disturbed. The Teacher ordered the five hundred people to flee, and they fled elsewhere. The Bhagavan, without concealment, went to a mountain cave and stayed there. Devadatta himself, with his five hundred attendants, pulled the stone and threw a huge, unbearable stone. The Vajrapani Yaksha struck the stone with his vajra, smashing it into powder. However, when a large fragment was about to fall on the Buddha's body, the Yaksha Kumara of Rajagriha intended to catch it, but that stone struck that Yaksha, causing him to die and be reborn in the Thirty-Three Heavens. At that time, a tiny piece of stone struck the Bhagavan's toe, causing a wound, and blood flowed. The Yaksha Kumbhira, who was reborn as a deva, came before the Teacher to listen to the Dharma and saw the truth. In order to examine the Bhagavan's illness, the young physician Jivaka went to the Buddha's residence three times a day. The people of Rajagriha discussed, 'This medicine is good, that medicine is good.' Jivaka said, 'There is a medicine that can heal wounds, but it is difficult to find.' 'What is it? It is excellent sandalwood earth.' Formerly, a merchant had a lot of excellent sandalwood earth, but it had already been sold, and there was still

Having saved a little butter, the king happened to need it. Thinking that if I couldn't offer it, I would be beheaded, so I hid it. Also thinking that if I offered it to the Teacher (Buddha) and Ajatasatru found out, I would be killed, but even if I was killed, I would be willing. So I thought, I will offer it to the Tathagata, and went and offered it. When the Buddha accepted it, that person rejoiced and made a wish and left. That merchant was prophesied to be the Sandalwood Buddha. But the bleeding still didn't stop. Some said that it would be beneficial to apply the milk of the first woman who gave birth to a child. In Rajagriha, there was such a woman with little milk, not even enough for her own child. When she heard about this, she thought, if I offer milk, my child will die. If Ajatasatru and Devadatta find out, I will also be killed, rather than that, I would rather die or be killed, so she milked milk into a new container and offered it. That girl who offered milk was prophesied to be the Milk-giving Buddha. However, the bleeding still didn't stop. Some applied medicine, some recited mantras, but none of them worked, so the Ten-Powered Light Protector asked the Buddha to tell the truth, and the Blessed One agreed. Then he said this: Blessed One, in your heart, are son and enemy the same? By this truth, may the bleeding of the wound stop! As soon as he spoke the truth, the bleeding stopped immediately. After that, Devadatta and his five hundred followers, everyone except Ajatasatru, were very happy. When the monks told about Devadatta throwing stones, Kokalika said: Are you talking nonsense? Devadatta is under a certain tree, abiding in the samadhi of the fourth dhyana, how could the great one do such a thing? The people on the border of Magadha also heard that Devadatta had done such a thing, and came with weapons to kill Devadatta. In the world, the arising of love, hatred, and neutrality is the law of things, so Devadatta was attacked, and he thought: Now I can neither escape nor fight, this method is good, so he stayed under the tree in a peaceful manner as if he was abiding in samadhi. When the people came, they saw him like that.

Therefore, if (Devadatta) abides in taming, (people) will think that the previous words are not true and return. (In the sutras) starting from Devadatta turning his skin into gold, every story in between also tells of similar causes and conditions from the past. There, Devadatta was oppressed by suffering, thinking that my throwing stones was a very meaningless thing, and I couldn't kill Gautama, and everyone felt it, listing me among the evil ones. Eighty-first, Taming the Mad Elephant: The Blessed One was dwelling in the Light Garden of Rajagriha (Rajgir, Bihar). King Ajatasatru had an elephant named Dhanapala, who was the son of a Naga elephant, very strong and difficult to tame, and often came out to kill many people and livestock. It was not released every day, and if it was to be released the next day, it would be announced to everyone that night. A wealthy householder of Rajagriha (Rajgir, Bihar) invited the Buddha and the Sangha to receive offerings the next day. The Buddha accepted. Devadatta heard this and gave the elephant trainer a pearl necklace worth a hundred thousand gold coins, saying: Tomorrow when the Shramana Gautama comes, release the elephant Dhanapala. The elephant trainer said: I am willing to do so, but please let the god know. Devadatta also informed King Ajatasatru, who said: Have I not heard that the Blessed One can tame the untamed? Devadatta said: If so, then he should tame me first, not tame the untamed, but release the elephant Dhanapala. He also agreed and informed the elephant trainer, announcing: Tomorrow the elephant Dhanapala will be released, everyone be careful to protect yourselves. That householder thought: I am really unlucky, inviting the Buddha once and encountering this kind of thing. But he still prepared food and took it up to offer. The next morning, he went to tell the Teacher, who said that the Tathagata has no fear of elephants, and he left very happily. At that time, when the Blessed One was traveling to Rajagriha (Rajgir, Bihar) with five hundred monks, the elephant Dhanapala was released. It also

Roaring loudly and running with all its might towards the Buddha. Devadatta and Ajatashatru were watching from the top of a high building. Devadatta rejoiced and said, "Look at the elephant Nalakiri, you are crushed by the power of the elephant. Shakya's son, you and your Shravakas have no hope today!" As he said this, the Blessed One said, "Now look at the wondrous power of the one with the ten powers!" Having said this, he transformed five lions with manes from the five fingers of his right hand. Just by smelling that scent, Nalakiri was terrified and fled in all directions. Seeing flames blazing in all directions, it could not find a place to escape. Knowing that only the place where the Blessed One was staying was peaceful, it slowly went to his feet. There, the other five hundred monks, seeing the enraged elephant, fled in four directions. Only the venerable Ananda remained alone before the Teacher. Then, the Blessed One stroked the elephant Nalakiri with his hand and said, "You acted improperly in the past, so you were born as an animal. Now, by killing other lives, what will you become?" And so on, he taught the Dharma and said, "Have faith in me, and you will be liberated from the birth of an animal." So he spoke. After that, the elephant developed great faith in the Buddha and followed the Blessed One with great joy. When the Teacher went to the house of that householder, it also stood at the door. Because it did not see the Teacher, it began to destroy the house. The Teacher transformed the house into the nature of crystal, and it clearly saw its own body and happily looked at it. There, he received offerings with the Sangha. After dedicating the merit and returning, the elephant Nalakiri also followed the Teacher. There, Ajatashatru said, "In the past, the kings of other countries could not harm me because of the power of this elephant. Now you have made it disappear." Thus he rebuked Devadatta. After that, the king said, "For the special needs of the city walls, turn the elephant into a gate!" Having done so, the elephant Nalakiri, not seeing the Buddha, wrapped its trunk around its own feet and crushed itself to death. Immediately after death, it was born as a god of the race of the Four Great Kings, at the
