The king, not believing, handed a vessel filled to the brim with oil to a man facing execution for a violation, threatening that even a single drop would result in death. He then made him walk past the dancing people. Afterward, the king had him asked what kind of songs and music he had seen. The man replied, "I was afraid of being executed, so I saw nothing." Thereupon, the Blessed One said, "If even fear of a single lifetime's suffering makes one so mindful, what need is there to mention that monks, fearing the suffering of many lifetimes, should always guard their mindfulness?" After that, the king became even more faithful and made great offerings to the Blessed One and his retinue. Then he asked, "Is there any offering greater than this offering to the Blessed One?" The Blessed One replied, "This is not so remarkable. A girl had no other possessions, so she sold her five hundred hairs to make this offering." The Blessed One spoke thus. The king thought that possessing hair worth five hundred 'panas' was rare even among the gods. So he sent people to beg from those who lived on sour porridge and, with great wealth, took the Brahmin girl with the hair as his queen. He also gave five hundred hidden ornaments and other things to the Brahmin mother. When the hair-woman arrived in the Holy Kingdom, the remnants of the plague quickly subsided, so she was named Queen 'Ba'. Here, the interspersed story is: Although not immediately following, at another time long after that, the king also killed many women. He pretended to offer a feast to many Brahmins, having arranged beforehand that an executioner would stand behind each Brahmin, and when he said, "Some sour porridge!" all were beheaded and killed at once. That night, the king dreamed that he heard: "Sixty thousand eons, sixty hundred thousand eons, beings tormented in hell, when will they ever end?" and so on, six sounds of the earth, and "Only a little essence remains, all has been dug out, the demon king is displeased with the essence, he has given up hope," and so on, six sounds of the sky. He also saw his body being smeared with white sandalwood, sprinkled with red powder, burned by fire, cut by swords, pierced by spears, dragged by iron hooks, eaten by worms, devoured by dogs and vultures, poisoned, covered with flowers, wrapped in silk, adorned with jewels, singing, dancing, playing music, experiencing joy, experiencing suffering, experiencing happiness, being tormented by non-humans, and so on. Afterward, he asked the Blessed Buddha. The Blessed One replied, "King, the beings you saw tormented in hell are the result of your killing many Brahmins. What you heard, 'Only a little essence remains,' is that only a remnant of your life remains. What you heard, 'The demon is displeased with the essence, he has given up hope,' is that your life will soon end. What you saw, your body being smeared with white sandalwood, is the result of your honoring monks. What you saw, being sprinkled with red powder, is the result of your shedding much blood. What you saw, being burned by fire, is the result of your being burned by fire in hell. What you saw, being cut by swords, is the result of your being cut by swords in hell. What you saw, being pierced by spears, is the result of your being pierced by spears in hell. What you saw, being dragged by iron hooks, is the result of your being dragged by iron hooks in hell. What you saw, being eaten by worms, is the result of your being eaten by worms in hell. What you saw, being devoured by dogs and vultures, is the result of your being devoured by dogs and vultures in hell. What you saw, being poisoned, is the result of your being poisoned in hell. What you saw, being covered with flowers, is the result of your offering flowers to monks. What you saw, being wrapped in silk, is the result of your offering silk to monks. What you saw, being adorned with jewels, is the result of your adorning monks with jewels. What you saw, singing, is the result of your singing for monks. What you saw, dancing, is the result of your dancing for monks. What you saw, playing music, is the result of your playing music for monks. What you saw, experiencing joy, is the result of your causing monks to experience joy. What you saw, experiencing suffering, is the result of your causing much suffering. What you saw, experiencing happiness, is the result of your causing monks to experience happiness. What you saw, being tormented by non-humans, is the result of your killing many non-humans. King, the deeds you have done in the past, you are now experiencing their results. Therefore, you must not take life again." The Blessed One said thus. After that, the king was terrified and took refuge in the Buddha.

A fireball was burning, a snake was hanging from each of the two armpits, a conch shell was licking each of the two legs, two swans were flying in the sky, a black mountain was coming from the front, and impure things were scattered on the heads of water birds. These were the eight dreams he had. The next morning, when he asked the Brahmins, they knew it was a good omen, but they thought they should interpret it wrongly. So they said that he had to bathe in the blood of killing the five supreme ones, etc. The king was not satisfied with these words, so after being urged by Zhiwa (Peace), he asked Katyayana. Katyayana comforted him, saying, "It is a good dream, do not be afraid." Then he explained: The six sounds of the earth deity are: King, your ancestors for about six generations ruled the country by mixing Dharma and non-Dharma. Those born in hell, suffering greatly, regretted their previous actions and uttered these sounds. The first of the six sounds in the sky is: The pillars of your house, except for the core, have been mostly eaten by insects, so replace the pillars. The second is: After the horseman married, he took out all the crow's eggs, so don't let anyone destroy the nests in the future. The third is: The water in the garden pond has dried up, and the water birds are sad, so fill the pond with water. The fourth is: A young elephant was captured from the violent mountain. It remembered its blind parents, did not eat grass or drink water, and wailed, so release it. The fifth is: You captured a deer, and it uttered sounds remembering its mate, so release it too. The sixth is: You captured a swan, and it felt sad seeing other swans flying away, so release it too. The first of the eight dream omens is: The king with a tall body will send you calfskin as a gift. The second is: The king of the earth will send you a red precious garment. The third is: The king of Yavana will send you a gold necklace. The fourth is: The king of China will send you a pair of swords. The fifth is: The king of Simhala will send you a pair of jeweled shoes. The sixth is: The king of Vanga will send you two horses. The seventh is: The king of Kalinga will send you an elephant king as a gift. These gifts will arrive within seven days. The eighth dream omen is known only to you and Zhiwa (Peace). However, do not harbor ill will towards the Brahmins.

Having spoken thus, the king was overjoyed as if he had regained his life, and carried out all that was said. Within seven days, the gifts also arrived. The king, with great devotion, offered the first gift, a large piece of fine cloth, to the venerable Katyayana. As for the other five precious items, he allowed them to choose as they wished. The queen Shanti chose a gold necklace, the queen Kyaseng and her daughter Dolma chose a robe, the young prince Balang Kyong chose two horses, the minister Sospe chose a sword, and the Brahmin priest chose shoes. The elephant belonged to the king himself. Then, King Rabnang offered the kingdom to the venerable Katyayana and his Sangha, but it was not accepted. He then offered half of the kingdom, which could be used with power for all desires, but it was also not accepted. When he requested to offer the best of enjoyments and utensils, Katyayana's son inquired of the Teacher from the Jetavana Monastery. The Teacher generated worldly compassion and issued a decree from Shravasti. Katyayana heard with divine ears and made requests and responses. For the sake of compassion for future generations and for the increase of the patron's enjoyments, such offerings are made to the Sangha, not to individuals. Enjoyments are towns and fields. The best of enjoyments are cattle, buffaloes, and goats, sheep, and so on. Thus, and so on, he spoke, and the king offered many monasteries complete with utensils, and offered enjoyments and the best of enjoyments to the Sangha of the four directions. At that time, the Bhagavan prophesied, saying: Among my lay followers, the foremost who first empowers the Sangha with all desires is Rabnang. The foremost in offering food is Gzugs can snying po (Rūpavatī, Essence of Form). The foremost in offering lodging is Gonme Zes Jin (Anāthapiṇḍada, Giver of Food to the Helpless). The foremost in building monasteries is Khyimdag Bzangdan (Sudatta, Good Giver). Thus, he also said. The five precious items possessed by the tyrannical King Rabnang are those mentioned above. The five nearby precious items are: the elephant named Lotus Mountain, which can travel a hundred yojanas in one day; the female elephant named Good Fortune, which can travel eighty yojanas in one day; the camel named Ocean Foot, which can travel seventy yojanas in one day; the horse named Cloth Neck, which can trave
