When the large crowd saw this, they said, "This woman is able to control the heart of the young man." King Śuddhodana heard these words and took the goddess Sapa Satso Ma and her twenty thousand attendants as the Bodhisattva's consort. Fourteenth, the cause of renunciation: Then, at another time, the Bodhisattva said to the charioteer, "Hey, charioteer, quickly prepare the good chariot! We are going to the garden." The charioteer replied, "As you command," and prepared as instructed. When the time came, he boarded the chariot and set off, and on the way he saw an old and frail man walking with a cane. He asked the charioteer, "What is this?" The charioteer replied, "God, this is called old age, and soon after he will die." "Oh, then can I not escape the law of old age?" "God cannot escape the law of old age either." The Bodhisattva ordered, "Turn the chariot around and go back to the palace." So he returned to the palace and thought, "Look, I cannot escape old age either." After that, King Śuddhodana asked the charioteer, "Does the young man like the garden?" The charioteer told in detail what had happened before, and the king thought, "Will the words of the diviners not come true? This young man may become a renunciate. Then, the gods of the Pure Abodes thought: Although this Bodhisattva has the power of cause, even if the power of cause is great, it still needs to rely on conditions, so he should be encouraged to renounce. Go to the farmer's village and see the end of labor." When he said this, the Bodhisattva was disgusted by the three things of old age, sickness, and death, and although he longed for renunciation, he listened to the words of his father, King Suddhodana, and rode in a chariot to the farmer's village. Seeing that the farmers' hands and feet had turned yellow, and the oxen were tired and plowing, etc., great compassion arose in his heart. He said, "May you experience happiness!" He also dismissed the farmers and untied the plows. Afterwards, seeing the farmers suffering, his heart was even more saddened. He sat in the shade of a Jambu tree and naturally entered the Samadhi of the First Dhyana, and manifested it. While the Bodhisattva was dwelling in that Samadhi, the great assembly of people did not abandon the Bodhisattva, but stayed near other trees. At that time, the king thought, "Now I should take the young man to see if we have missed the harvest time." So he rode in a chariot and went to where the Bodhisattva was. The sun had passed noon, and the shadows of the other trees were leaning eastward, but the shadow of the Jambu tree did not leave the Bodhisattva's body, and the shadow did not move eastward. The king saw this. The king prostrated at the feet of the Bodhisattva. "Just as the earth shook at your birth, and the shadow of the Jambu tree does not leave your body, O wise one, these two are wonders. O all-seeing one, I prostrate at your feet." Thus he praised. In the upper palace where the Bodhisattva resided, he was surrounded by all the supreme women, and they were made to perform various songs, dances, and music. The assembly of ministers, together with the four divisions of the army, patrolled the surroundings outside the walls.
