Through activities such as holding feasts, offering Torma (Tibetan: གཏོར་མ་) to Dharma protectors, giving Torma to spirits, and hosting banquets for neighbors and relatives, may this root of virtue become the supreme generosity, the ornament of the mind, the resources for yogic practice, and through this supreme meaning, for the benefit of all limitless sentient beings, with Khenpo (abbot) and Acharya (teacher), father and mother at the forefront, may we attain the state of complete enlightenment of Buddhahood! Recite this three times, and at the end, recite: Until that is attained, may we in all lifetimes attain a human body with leisure and endowments! Having attained a human body, may we meet with a virtuous friend of the Great Vehicle! May they grant instructions and guidance, so that in practicing it, all outer and inner obstacles are absent and do not arise, and may we attain the supreme Siddhi (attainment) of Mahamudra (Great Seal)! May it be just so! Recite this three times. If one wishes to dedicate merit for the deceased, contemplate the root of virtue accumulated by them in the three times, and whatever root of virtue their relatives and friends remaining have done for their sake, may all sentient beings, beginning with the deceased, be separated from all the sufferings of Samsara (cyclic existence), and dedicate it for the sake of attaining unsurpassed Bodhi (enlightenment). The one making the dedication should repeat after the reciter: May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions heed, the deceased, named so-and-so, etc. May the Sangha (community) of monks heed, the deceased, named so-and-so. May the deceased, named so-and-so, with the root of virtue accumulated in the three times, the root of virtue arising from generosity, the root of virtue arising from ethical conduct, and the root of virtue arising from meditation, and the root of virtue of what was done, what will be done, and what was rejoiced in, and with the offerings to the Three Jewels, the veneration of the Sangha, the proclamation of the Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom), the offering of Torma to Dharma protectors, the giving of Torma to spirits, and the hosting of banquets for neighbors and relatives, etc., done by us relatives and friends remaining for the sake of the deceased, named so-and-so, may the deceased, if due to the power of Karma (action), they are born in any of the six realms of existence, may that root of virtue enter and follow after that and that, and may the beings of the six realms each… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May he be free from all suffering and attain the perfect leisure and endowment of a human body. Having obtained a human body, may he hear the name of the Three Jewels. Having heard the name of the Three Jewels, may he develop faith in the Three Jewels. Having developed faith in the Three Jewels, may he take refuge, generate Bodhicitta, study all the precepts, and ultimately attain the state of complete enlightenment of a Buddha.' Recite this three times. The Sangha present should also recite: 'May it be so!' Recite this three times. Thus, performing virtuous deeds for his (the deceased's) sake and dedicating the roots of virtue to him will itself make the roots of virtue vast. Therefore, one should also dedicate the roots of virtue (done for) the living. The ritual for dedicating (merit) for the living and the dead, recorded from the oral teachings of Lama Rinpoche, is now complete. Homage to the Lamas! This is the instruction on how to undertake the Nyungne (fasting practice). It is said that there is no other lineage than the one from the great Geshe Naljorpa (Yogic Scholar). It is said that when Jowo Atisha (Lord Atisha) was alive, the great Geshe Naljorpa would request Atisha to bestow the Nyungne upon those who came to take it, and Atisha would bestow it himself. When Atisha was not present, the faithful men and women would request (Geshe Naljorpa) to bestow the Nyungne, but (Geshe Naljorpa) did not have the instructions on how to bestow it, so he asked (Atisha). Jowo (Lord) was very pleased and said, 'That is how Maha Yogic Bodhi does it.' Then he taught how to bestow the Nyungne. The great Geshe Naljorpa asked, 'Isn't this the custom of the Mahasanghika (Great Assembly) school? What would happen if we did this in Tibet?' Jowo's face turned dark, and with a reproachful expression, he said, 'No benefit! No benefit! You only do things your own way.' (Jowo) said, 'This is quoted from the ceremony of bestowing the monastic vows in the Vinaya (Book of Discipline). Where do you, who adhere to the Sarvastivada (Doctrine That Everything Exists) school, get the authority of the Mahasanghika school?' (Jowo) also said, 'This was said by Lama Serlingpa (Lama from the Golden Isle).' It is said that there are two lineages for the Nyungne practitioner: the teaching lineage and the practice lineage. The scriptures say: 'Renouncing vows, death, the simultaneous appearance of two genders, breaking the root vows, and the expiration of the vows all require abandoning the Pratimoksha vows.' Here, the abandoning of the vows because the night has passed refers to the teaching lineage. The custom of the practice lineage is that one does not abandon it until the end of life.' It is said that (Jowo) granted permission in this way. Therefore, in the above instruction, it says: 'The nature of Samsara (cyclic existence) in the three realms is suffering, and the nature of suffering is...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
