There is not a single moment without suffering. Having abandoned all faults and possessing all qualities, is the complete Buddha. This does not arise from no cause, not from a mistaken cause, not from an incomplete cause, not from being interrupted by opposing conditions. The only cause for attaining Buddhahood is the three precious trainings. That is, the higher training in discipline, like a completely pure vessel; the higher training in mind, like water collected within it; the higher training in wisdom, like the reflection of the sun and moon within it. Among these, the higher training in discipline is the most important. For laypeople, this eight-precept observance is especially important. The Buddha said to King Clear Victory (藏文:གསལ་རྒྱལ་,meaning: Clear Victory): 'Great King, you are too busy with affairs to train in the six perfections, so you should train in the eight-limbed observance.' The noble Nāgārjuna also said to King Good Conduct (藏文:བདེ་སྤྱོད་བཟང་པོ,meaning: Good and Auspicious Conduct): 'Your discipline, though not broken, should not be inferior; rely on that which is unmixed and undefiled. Discipline is like the earth, the foundation of all qualities.' Therefore, Great King, you should abide in the eight-limbed observance. This observance is very important, please imitate me.' Then say: 'Please listen, Teacher. I, so-and-so (name), from this time until the end of my life, take refuge in the best of bipeds—the Buddha, take refuge in the best of the passionless—the Dharma, take refuge in the best of assemblies—the Sangha.' Recite three times. 'Please listen, Teacher. I, so-and-so (name), from this time until the end of my life, on the eighth, fifteenth, and thirtieth days of every month, request the Teacher to grant me the observance.' Recite three times, and answer 'It is possible' or 'Good.' Thus, one obtains the precepts. Merely obtaining the precepts is not enough; one must also protect them. If one does not protect them, it is like picking up a stone from the ground and hitting oneself on the head. In order to recognize what should be protected, I will now explain the precepts, please imitate me. 'Please listen, Teacher. How did the past noble Arhats abandon killing, taking what is not given...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abstaining from unchaste conduct, false speech, grain alcohol, prepared alcohol, and intoxicants, places of negligence, singing, dancing, musical sounds, garlands, applying perfumes, wearing ornaments and colors, high beds, large seats, and abstaining from afternoon meals, refraining from eating after noon. Likewise, I (recite your name here) will, from this time until the end of my life, observe these on the first, second, eighth, and fifteenth of every month. Unchaste conduct, stealing, unchaste conduct, false speech, grain alcohol, prepared alcohol, intoxicating liquids, places of negligence, singing, dancing, musical sounds, garlands, applying perfumes, wearing ornaments and colors, high beds, large seats, abstaining from afternoon meals, and refraining from eating after noon. With these eight branches, I will follow the training of the noble Arhats (Arhat, अरिहन्त, arihant, 'Worthy One'), follow, practice, and do. This is the method, saying 'Good'. These are to be protected. In the morning, bathe early, and then visualize countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, बोधिसत्त्व, bodhisattva, 'Enlightenment Being') in the space before you, prostrating as much as possible. Do not harm sentient beings on that day. If you kill a person on that day, the precepts (Śīla, शील, śīla, 'Virtue') will be lost from the root. You must not even kill ants or small insects. Stealing, even stealing something worth one Bre (a unit of measurement), will cause the precepts to be lost. You must not even steal a sesame seed. Engaging in unchaste conduct will cause the precepts to be lost from the root. You must not even look at a woman with lustful thoughts. False speech, saying you have seen a deity when you have not, or saying you have attained Arhatship when you have not, will cause the precepts to be lost from the root. Do not even lie for the sake of joking. The antidote to abandoning these is the precepts. These four are the root. For example, if a tree is cut from the root, the branches and leaves will wither. Drinking grain alcohol, etc., will not cause the precepts to be lost from the root, but it will become a cause of decline, so you cannot protect the precepts and must protect them well. If you do not protect them, it is said that you will drink boiling iron water in the next life. Indulging in worldly singing, dancing, musical sounds, wearing garlands, applying perfumes, ornaments, using high beds and large seats. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is said that even in the absence (of monks), merit can be obtained through the mind of renunciation. Afternoon food refers to food that can be eaten from after noon until before dawn. If one is not ill, it is not allowed to be eaten. The so-called 'snying po ‘bogs pa' (meaning unclear) and 'la le ma zer ba' (meaning unclear) are all Tibetan-made, so one should only take refuge (in the Three Jewels).' The Nyenchené ritual is based on the oral teachings of Lama Rinpoche, and this concludes it. This concludes the བསྙེན་གནས་ཀྱི་ཆོ་ག་(Nyenchené kyi choga, The ritual of Nyenchené). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
