If one merely contemplates, one will pursue the heavens and happy realms. Just that much is like extinguishing a fire with the obstacles of the three lower realms. Furthermore, even practicing the ten virtues without having entered the path will lead to rebirth in the three heavenly realms. Even if born there, there are no joyful companions, and one only enjoys the causes of suffering. It is like being on the edge of a precipice of the lower realms. Even if born as a god, there is death and falling, gods abandoning goddesses, goddesses abandoning gods, and other immeasurable sufferings such as losing a drumstick or being born in fish eggs. Even if born as an Asura (demigod), there is always the immeasurable suffering of fighting and strife. Throwing precious mountains back and forth, full of anger, hatred, jealousy, killing, cutting, and immeasurable suffering like that of a revivification hell. Even if born as a human, there are three or eight sufferings, and so on. Among these, first are the four fundamental sufferings: birth, aging, sickness, and death, these four great rivers. First, the suffering of birth includes: in the mother's womb, when the mother eats too much, it is like being pressed under a heavy weight; when the mother is hungry, it is like being hung up; at the time of birth, it is like being squeezed between huge rocks, or like being skinned; when falling to the ground, it is like falling into a pit of fire or thorns, and so on, there are countless sufferings. Then, in old age, the hair turns white, the teeth fall out, the eyesight becomes blurred, the hearing declines, the back becomes hunched, standing requires support, sitting is prone to falling, the feet cannot support the body, and so on, there are countless sufferings. Third, the suffering of sickness, even now, just a toothache is unbearable, what more to say of other sicknesses? Fourth, the suffering of death, at the time of death, lying on the bed, the last food is only a drop of water, relatives and friends surrounding are of no help, the suffering of severing life is only experienced alone. When the appearance of Yama (Lord of Death) arises, feces and urine are discharged like arrows. Relatives and friends cannot help, food and wealth cannot prevent death. As Master Shantideva said: 'When lying on one's own bed, even though relatives and friends surround, the feeling of cutting off life, only oneself experiences alone. The messengers of Yama appear' (Tibetan: གཤིན་རྗེ, Sanskrit Devanagari: यम, Sanskrit Romanization: yama, Literal meaning: Yama) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He said, 'What use are relatives? What use are friends? What merit was accumulated at that time? I couldn't rely on it!' Therefore, the suffering of death is unbearable. Furthermore, there is the suffering of having but not being able to maintain, the suffering of not having but not being able to find, the fear of encountering enemies, the fear of separating from loved ones, the worry of not having a son, the worry of not having a dowry for a daughter, and the suffering of regional biases, factional biases, the fear of losing reputation, and so on, there are countless sufferings. As it is said, 'There is no happiness for those in samsara, there is no fragrance in impurity.' Therefore, just contemplating the faults of the three realms of samsara, it's like a person falling into a deep pit of prison, not wanting to stay there for even a moment, thinking, 'When can I escape?' 'How can I escape from here?' Just like that, I realize that the nature of the three realms of samsara is suffering, and there is not a single moment of happiness that is not suffering. I should generate the thought of 'How can I escape from this great ocean of suffering of the three realms of samsara?' Then, one will pursue personal peace and nirvana. Only then can one get rid of the bonds of the three realms of samsara. Moreover, even if I alone am liberated from samsara, there are no happy companions. There is no sentient being in the three realms who has not been my parent, because samsara has no beginning or end. As the scripture says, 'The ashes of mothers are piled up like mustard seeds, even if piled into a mountain, it cannot be exhausted.' It means that even if the ashes of one sentient being who has been a mother are piled up into a mountain the size of a small bean, it cannot be exhausted. The number of times a sentient being has been a mother cannot be counted even with that. Therefore, the kindness of mothers is the greatest. As it is said, giving food like Mount Meru, wearing clothes like clouds, the milk that was drunk is more than the water of the four great oceans.' Therefore, the kindness of mothers is the greatest. Because all the food that one does not eat, the drinks that one does not drink, the things that one does not use, are all given to the child. One sleeps in the damp place, and lets the child sleep in the dry place. Warming the child with one's own body temperature, wiping away all the impurities. Not daring to let the child go where the eyes cannot see. Always thinking, 'My child is the happiest and most joyful in the world, what if others are better than my child?' Always thinking like this, so the kindness of mothers is the greatest! Since mothers are so kind and virtuous, now we should repay their kindness. So, are mothers happy or unhappy now? Please answer with scripture. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
