The nature of the five is, I have explained, you should understand. The great elements, the Bhagavan, naturally exist in all beings. All sentient beings in the three realms abide in the realm of the five elements. Before the elements arose, there were no names of Buddhas or sentient beings. The five elements themselves are the realm of the mother. There is not a single living being or sentient being that is not made up of the five elements. The elements of the sentient beings who dwell therein are shown to be of two kinds: outer elements and inner elements. The outer elements are as follows: earth is solid, water is cohesive, fire burns, and wind moves, like the outer wind, the inner wind, and the secret wind, and space is vast. The characteristics of the five elements are: the cause of the elements is earth, the wisdom of the elements is fire, the manifestation of the elements is wind, the lord of the elements is water, and the nature of the elements is space. Thus, the five great elements are considered the outer great elements. Then he asked again: "O Bhagavan, Lord of the Great Elements, please tell me the definition of the elements." Thus he asked. The Lord of the Great Elements replied: "Ah, listen, Lord of Secrets. The definition of the elements is as follows: not made by action, the elements are spontaneously accomplished. Because it creates all, it is the great element. Because it pervades all beings, it is the great element. Because it arises simultaneously, it is the great element. Because it exists in itself, it is the great element. Because it does not change, it is the great element. Because it appears harmonious, it is the great element. Because it is able to accomplish deeds, it is the great element. The definition of the elements is just so." Again he asked: "O Bhagavan, possessor of self, if the definition of the great elements is such, please tell me the meaning and combination of the elements." Thus he asked. Vajradhara replied: "O assembly of gatherings, listen. The meaning and combination of the elements is as follows: in the nature of the Dharmakaya, which is pure from the beginning, because the essence does not change, the element is also earth. Because the wisdom of awareness acts in meaning, the element is also fire. Because the wisdom of awareness knows in the immovable realm, the element is also wind. Because the wisdom of awareness, the knots of the body also abide, the three are combined into one, the element is also water. Emptiness and clarity, two

Since it dissolves without a place, the origin is the sky. The meaning of origin is just like that. The great nature of origin is what appears to everyone in that way. Unceasing appearance is the miracle of origin. Immutable awareness is the essence of origin. Thus, the great origin itself, even the Buddhas, came before me. The five great origins are those that arise from themselves and are perfected in themselves. The logic of origin is just like that. The compassion of the Buddhas appears as the five elements. In the center of the mandala of the great origin, self-born wisdom is hidden as a treasure. In the palace of emptiness, pure appearance is hidden as a treasure. In the center of the mandala of the wisdom realm, the five immutable bodies are hidden as a treasure. In the appearance of the bardo of reality, the wisdom of awareness is hidden as a treasure. In the depths of the five poisons, unceasing awareness is hidden as a treasure. In the center of the mandala of habitual confusion, clear wisdom is hidden as a treasure. Thus, in the burial ground of the Buddhas, it is hidden in the center of one's own heart. May these great treasures be realized. Thus, from the Great Tantra of Self-Arisen Awareness, the nineteenth chapter, which teaches the five outer elements. Then the assembled retinue requested as follows: Kye Kye, Blessed One, endowed with great compassion, since the outer elements are such, please speak of the inner elements. Thus they requested. Again, he said: Emaho! I will teach a wonderful Dharma, listen well. The five great elements are complete in one's own body. That is, the five kinds of wind make the sound of wisdom. The five kinds of fire perform the activity of wisdom. The five kinds of earth make the essence of wisdom. The five kinds of water make the realm of wisdom. The five kinds of space make the place of wisdom. What is the definite number of the five kinds of wind? The life-sustaining wind dwells in the life-force channel, the wind that generates radiance and splendor dwells in the eyebrows, the wind that dwells together with fire dwells in the stomach, the wind that pervades all pervades the entire body, and the wind of the kalpa of merciless karma, these are the five. These winds dwell in the beginning and end of the bodies of all sentient beings. The definite number of fire is shown to be five, the fire that illuminates all inside and outside dwells in the eyes and limbs,
