Sa! For the Dharma nature that is without cause and effect, there is no cause and effect of things. Realizing that there is no cause and effect in the ultimate sense, one cannot deny various causes and effects. Thus it was said. Vajrasattva again asked: What is the object of practice, the very essence of the definitive vehicle? What is the object of non-practice? What is the manner of practice? Please, all-knowing one, speak. The All-Knowing Teacher replied: The objects of practice are of three kinds: requesting again and again with faith, praying for refuge when there is no refuge, and being threatened by intense suffering. The objects of non-practice are of three kinds: being powerless and lacking strength, straying from the meaning due to wrong practice, and being defiled by the stains of youth. The manner of practice is of three kinds: the practice manner of condensed instructions, the practice manner of forceful means, and the practice manner of manifest preparation. By symbolizing with that manner of practice, the reality of the uncreated essence is that, although it is not a pervasive, formed thing, there is no coming and going in all places. Because the primordial Buddha has no beginning or end, by realizing it through symbols or methods, one pacifies the diseases of afflictions. With the great medicine of unattached self-arising, one eliminates the diseases of clinging to samsara. From the Tantra of the Arrangement of the Precious Noble Path, the first chapter, the introduction. Vajrasattva again asked: Teacher, Dharma King, All-Knowing One, King of Equality, after one's own mind has become a demon, cutting off the life-force of Bodhi, please speak of the method of taming it. Samantabhadra replied: Gathered assembly, listen to me. Turn the mind's faculty to the ear. Listen to the sound with the ear faculty. After one's own mind has become a demon, if one cuts off the life-force of Bodhi, one will not do other harm. The method of taming it is explained: to grasp what has not been grasped, the sequence of taking it into hand is, the body making mudras, the outer and inner breaths harmonizing, placing the object in front, and by focusing the mind on it, one does not follow after desires. Do not hold two thoughts in going. If it does not remain there and scatters elsewhere, then focus intensely on the two graspers. By that, one's own mind will be grasped. If one thinks of remaining and thinks of scattering, conceptual thoughts will increase.

E Beh! One should know how to train in the winds. When the lower wind is gently filled, and the upper wind is held strongly, the nature of awareness is bound by the wind. The body's wheel should be done as before. Bless the offerings and dissolve them within. Generate effort and engage in practice. Divide the duration of practice into three levels: high, medium, and low. If one masters the sixty-four, forty, and twenty channels, one should diligently practice and generate effort. By doing so, one will become stable. If a male, female, or hermaphrodite experiences Tögal (direct crossing), etc., the measure should be determined by a wise lama. Do not exert effort; rest in the natural state. There is no need to rely on subsequent remedies. By resting in one's own place, one becomes stable. By not meditating but being introduced to experience, naked awareness is free from extremes. Being free from extremes, it arises as the Dharmakaya (Body of Truth). Thus it was said. Vajrasattva then asked again: "O Incomparable Vajradhara (Diamond Holder), I rejoice in the practice you have spoken of with faith, and I bow to you with reverence. I ask again about the true meaning. In order to dispel unfavorable obstacles, please explain their distinctions." The Lord of Secrets replied: "To the meaning you have asked, I will give a good answer. Listen with reverence. There are four kinds of obstacles to meditation: sinking, agitation, reversed winds, and doubt and hesitation about meditative appearances. These are said to be obstacles to meditation. There are four aspects to a sinking mind: essence, cause, distinction, and the means of remedy should be known. The essence is when awareness is unclear, and the mind is obstructed in the direction of qualities. The cause is the great earth element and what is produced by phlegm. There are three kinds of distinctions: intentionally caused sinking, sinking due to circumstances, and sinking arising from the force of nature. Although there are countless means of remedy, in this treatise there are three: the key point of wind, the key point of object of focus, and the key point of conduct should be known. Agitation is also the same: essence, cause, distinction, and the means of remedy are explained as four. The essence is connected to objects and circumstances. The cause is the great wind element and what is produced by desire. There are three kinds of distinctions: intentionally caused agitation, agitation due to circumstances, and agitation arising from the force of nature. Although there are many means of remedy, the essence of the teachings is considered to be three: first, the door of entry is also blocked, in the middle,
