After generating the mind of enlightenment, train the continuum, do not forget the mind of enlightenment, and adopt or abandon the eight black and white dharmas, these are five. Among them, the first is not abandoning sentient beings, such as saying to someone, 'I am of no benefit to you, and I cannot protect you from harm.' Abandoning in this way is no different from abandoning all sentient beings pervading the sky, and the vow of aspirational bodhicitta is severed from the root, like the knot of a bundle of firewood being untied. Therefore, do not abandon sentient beings, and strive to repay harm with benefit. Second, remember the benefits of the mind of enlightenment, all the Buddhas abiding in the infinite realms of the ten directions and all the bodhisattvas abiding on the great earth have no other path than generating the precious mind of enlightenment. Therefore, the merits of generating the mind of enlightenment are as shown by the bodhisattva Maitreya to the youth Sudhana with two hundred and fifty examples. Third, the accumulation of merit is divided into two types: meritorious accumulation with focus and wisdom accumulation without focus. Meritorious accumulation with focus, such as giving, no matter how much the giver gives, as long as it is held by the mind of enlightenment, it is a meritorious accumulation. All of these are held by wisdom without focus, which is the completion of the wisdom accumulation. The benefits of the two accumulations held by the mind of enlightenment can be known from the Great Secret Skillful Means Sutra and others. Fourth, there are three ways to tame the continuum with the mind of enlightenment: learning the cause of generating the mind of enlightenment, learning the actual mind of enlightenment, and finally learning to increase the mind of enlightenment, exchanging self and others, these are three. First, learning the cause, compassion is also needed, focusing on sentient beings, focusing on dharma, and compassion without focus, all three are needed. For the initial practitioner, because they have not practiced beforehand, it is difficult to generate compassion for immeasurable sentient beings, so first it is for one's own beloved parents or friends, then for intermediate sentient beings, and finally for enemies who cause harm to oneself, etc., gradually practice and make them accustomed, and then make them all have happiness.

Generating the thought, "How wonderful it would be to be free from suffering!" and continuing to meditate in that state as tears flow unconsciously. That non-discrimination is the meditation of loving-kindness. The merits of the meditation of loving-kindness are stories such as the power of the loving-kindness of the king. In the post-meditation period, practice the mind of exchanging happiness and suffering, and dedicate the merit to perfect enlightenment. Second, to train in the actual mind of enlightenment, recite the root downfalls of the Bodhisattva three times in the morning, noon, and evening, and confess the root downfalls that have been committed. After completing the preliminary practice of taking refuge and the seven branches of the mandala, take the Bodhisattva vows. Meditate on the joy of self and others, and make aspirations. Transform the mind with the four: sleep, regret, discrimination, and observation, on the path of the Bodhisattva. Third, in the end, strive to practice exchanging happiness and suffering, etc., for the sake of increasing the mind of enlightenment. Fifth, the cause of not forgetting the Bodhisattva mind, forgetting the precious mind of enlightenment from life to life are the four black dharmas, therefore, reverse from those four black dharmas and rely on the four white dharmas that do not forget the mind of enlightenment from life to life. Abandon deceiving the worthy lamas and Bodhisattvas with falsehood, causing unpleasant regret in those who are on the path to enlightenment where there is no regret, slandering the Bodhisattvas who strive to benefit sentient beings, and abandoning the deceitful and deceptive harm like deceiving others. By striving to practice the four white dharmas that are the opposite of this, one will not forget the mind of enlightenment, this is the training of the aspiration mind. Second, there are two trainings of the action mind: the four root downfalls and the forty-six transgressions. The first is, clinging especially with a mind of greed for gain and honor, the root downfall of praising oneself and disparaging others. Caused by stinginess, not giving wealth etc. to the objects of generosity, and not teaching the Dharma to the objects of Dharma. Caused by hatred, harming others with anger, such as beating, etc., the object of anger is purified by the other party with scolding, even if I have done such a wrong, words like it has not harmed you.

Even if scolded, not pacifying his anger, but becoming angry again, that is the second. Regarding the Mahayana Dharma, allowing others to be influenced by ignorance and abandon the Dharma, and concealing all one's own negative aspects, and disguising them with a false image of the Dharma, thereby propagating false Dharma, that is the fourth. All of these depend on motivation, so there are four. From the perspective of action, they are considered eight. Here, the eighteen root downfalls listed above are according to the Nagarjuna school. The eighteen root downfalls of Bodhisattva Goodness do not exist, they are merely fabricated. Acharya Abhayakara considers all eighteen root downfalls and the four to be actual root downfalls. Aryadeva considers both of these to be necessary to protect. Previously, based on the twenty root downfalls of the Nagarjuna school, adding stinginess and not giving wealth, not accepting punishment due to anger, propagating the Dharma with a false image of the Dharma, disguising it as the Dharma, these three, in total, are considered twenty-three. The Ancient Translation school also holds the same view as the latter. The preliminary training for these are the four root downfalls. The forty-six branch offenses can be understood from the Vinaya-vimsaka, etc. Auspiciousness. Explanation of the verses on the precepts of offenses in the Bodhisattva chapter of the Definitive Treatise on the Three Vows.
