The Clear Elucidation of the Two Truths in the Mahayana View. The Clear Elucidation of the Two Truths in the Mahayana View. This is the treatise called "The Clear Elucidation of the Two Truths in the Mahayana View." For those who desire liberation, there are two types of dharma to be understood and practiced. The first type includes both the general nature of knowable things and the nature of consciousness itself. The first of these also includes the two truths: conventional truth and ultimate truth. The first of these is that all appearances, from the Naraka hell up to the post-attainment of the tenth bhumi, are conventional truth. This includes both false and true conventional truths. For beginners and those below, all appearances are false conventional truth. For those with faith and practice, when the calculation of realization is complete, all appearances are true conventional truth. When it is not complete, it is false conventional truth. Once the bhumis are attained, all appearances in the mind are true conventional truth. Because appearance has not ceased, it is conventional truth, and because it is seen directly as false. The appearances from the first to the tenth bhumi are produced by the unabandoned habit of long-standing clinging to reality, like the scent of a musk container. For the Buddha, who has completely abandoned habits, there are no appearances, and he abides in the ultimate truth of non-proliferation. Clinging to the ordinary world of beings and environment as real is false conventional truth. As an antidote to this, meditating on pure deities and palaces as illusions is true conventional truth. Secondly, the nature of ultimate truth is the dharmadhatu free from elaboration. Although its nature is undifferentiated, it can be divided according to whether it is manifest or not. There is the ultimate truth of inherent nature, and the ultimate truth of realizing that nature. Or, there is the ultimate truth of cutting off the imputations of hearing and thinking, and the ultimate truth experienced by yogis. Or, there is the ultimate truth inferred by ordinary beings through generalities, and the ultimate truth seen directly by noble ones through self-awareness. This is also said to be the ultimate truth of names and the ultimate truth without names. These two truths have three ways of appearing: appearing as self-existent and with attachment is the ground of ordinary beings, which is called false conventional truth. Realizing that appearances are false and without attachment is the ground of noble ones, which is called true conventional truth. There is neither appearance nor non-appearance, and it is free from the calculation of attachment and non-attachment, which is the ground of the Buddha.

It is called ultimate truth. Among them, the first has both appearance and attachment, the middle has only appearance without attachment, and the last has neither appearance nor attachment. These three are the consciousness of delusion, the consciousness of conventional consciousness, and the consciousness of ultimate consciousness. The wisdom of ordinary people's conventional consciousness relies on analysis and research, while that of noble ones is direct perception. In the realm of ultimate reality, there is no talk of knowing or not knowing, but the realization of it is called knowing or realization, etc. Ultimately, one must realize the inseparability of the two truths. If one regards conventional truth as truly existent and ultimate truth as completely non-existent, then it will not become the view of the Middle Way. Because at the moment of realizing the true conventional truth, one will naturally be free from all extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, and thus integrate the two truths. As the Mother Sutra says: What is the suchness of conventional truth is the suchness of ultimate truth. The division into two truths is only a temporary establishment for the sake of easy understanding, based on both the knower and the known. That is to say, the appearance of various things on the deluded knower is called conventional truth; on the deluded knower where delusion has ceased, there is not even a particle of things, and even non-existence itself cannot be determined, therefore it is called ultimate truth. As it is said: When existence and non-existence, do not abide before the mind, at that time there is no other aspect, without aspect, it is completely pacified. In reality, for the ultimate nature of the knowable, the realm of reality of great emptiness free from elaboration, there is no basis for establishing the distinction between the two truths, therefore there is no distinction. For the intention of the Buddha who has reached the ultimate, there is also no distinction between the two truths. Even in the current illusory appearance, the two truths are not established as independent of each other, but abide in the inseparability of appearance and emptiness, and the inseparability of awareness and emptiness. Such realization or understanding is the intention of the Buddha, the wisdom of the non-duality of Dharma nature. Correctly knowing the respective characteristics of the two truths and integrating them into one is called the non-dual wisdom of union and non-abiding Nirvana, etc. Thus, even if one understands the overall reality of the knowable object, if one does not understand the self-reality of the knowing consciousness, then all phenomena will remain in the realm of the knowable.
