If there is no harm to oneself and others, one should do one's best to be a protector and so on for sentient beings. Furthermore, examining the different inclinations of sentient beings, in general, the types, faculties, and inclinations of sentient beings are inconceivable, but in short, they can be summarized into eight

If the obstacles to hearing, thinking, and meditating do not arise for the sake of benefiting immeasurable sentient beings, then one should actually do as much as one can to benefit sentient beings. If, by actually benefiting some sentient beings, the path of hearing, thinking, and meditating becomes an obstacle to being able to benefit immeasurable sentient beings in the future, then one should not do it. This should also be measured and decided according to the magnitude of the actual benefit to sentient beings and the magnitude of the harm to one's own hearing, thinking, and meditating. If the two are equal, then one should mainly do what benefits others. Do not abandon the great for the sake of the small. Mainly consider the benefit of others. Thus it is said. Thus, the result of these nine types of examination is that whatever parts are to be done should be done, and whatever parts are not to be done should be abandoned. Then, a Bodhisattva will be without downfalls and will possess benefits. If the parts that should be done are not done, and the parts that should not be done are done, then one will have faults and downfalls. Furthermore, in order to accomplish the great benefit of sentient beings, one can set aside some of one's own small benefits and some minor transgressions of the precepts, and go on to benefit sentient beings. This is called the image of a downfall. To foolish people, it seems as if one has incurred some downfall of the precepts, but in reality, its own nature has no fault or downfall at all. Also, although one sees the great benefit of sentient beings, one abandons the opportunity to benefit sentient beings because one is concerned about one's own small benefits and minor precepts. This is called the image of no downfall. To foolish people, it seems as if there is no downfall, but in reality, its own nature has a downfall. Therefore, one should abandon the two images of downfall and no downfall, and train in the two images of no downfall and downfall. These are the methods of training in the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. These three disciplines are the same in essence, but different in emphasis. The three disciplines of a Bodhisattva are all wisdom that aims at benefiting sentient beings, and are the same in essence. The different emphases in the order are that in the Pratimoksha discipline, one accomplishes one's own benefit for the sake of sentient beings. In the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, one accomplishes the benefit of both oneself and others. In the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, one accomplishes the benefit of others. The Pratimoksha discipline is mainly practiced by beginners. The discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas is mainly practiced by those who have faith and practice. The discipline of benefi

Therefore, those who have attained fruition should prioritize (discipline). Furthermore, the first discipline is to abandon all discordant things that obscure the benefit of oneself and others; the second is to perfect the qualities that fully accomplish the benefit of oneself and others; the third is to completely accomplish all that perfects the activity of benefiting others. If these three disciplines lack the wisdom that realizes selflessness as a companion, then because the realm of sentient beings is inexhaustible, the time is long, and even the Buddhas of the past were unable to liberate them, and because sentient beings, with their evil deeds, repay kindness with harm, it is easy to become weary of the affairs of sentient beings and to generate the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer. If, with the wisdom that realizes selflessness, one knows that all phenomena are without substance like the sky in the ultimate sense, then weariness will not arise. All virtuous actions are gathered into the two accumulations, therefore gather virtuous Dharma. The supreme thought, the complete mind of enlightenment, is to cherish others by realizing that both oneself and others equally desire happiness and do not desire suffering, and thereby transforming the self-grasping, deluded sentient being into one who cherishes others. The state of these three vows is that, from the perspective of their essence, they exist in a state of alternating manifestation and latency. From the perspective of the individual, for the beginner, all three vows exist in the mode of definitive meaning. For those who follow faith and those who follow Dharma, both the straight meaning of individual liberation and the two exist in the mode of definitive meaning. For those who have attained the ground, the three vows exist in the mode of straight meaning, because in the ultimate sense there is nothing to be guarded. From the perspective of time, individual liberation exists for as long as one lives, and the latter two exist until one attains enlightenment. In the ultimate sense, there is nothing in the sentient being's own continuum that wanders in samsara. Merely in the conventional truth, the sudden actions and afflictions, which are like illusions, lead the sentient being's illusory conceptual mind, and thus one experiences the illusory suffering of samsara, like the mind in the dream realm of a person oppressed by sleep. If one engages in generosity and other actions while being embraced by emptiness and compassion, it will become the cause or path of omniscience. First, a Bodhisattva should cultivate the path of omniscience, such as generosity, through the gateway of the three supreme dharmas, which is to generate the mind.
