Notes on the Nine Examinations for Benefiting Sentient Beings Notes on the Nine Examinations for Benefiting Sentient Beings Notes on the Nine Examinations for Benefiting Sentient Beings, Presented. The way a Bodhisattva benefits sentient beings: Any Bodhisattva who has properly taken the vows of a Bodhisattva has no other task than to directly or indirectly benefit sentient beings. However, if one is not skilled in benefiting sentient beings, everything done will not become a benefit to sentient beings, and may even become a cause of harm, directly or indirectly. Therefore, one must examine nine aspects before benefiting sentient beings. First, examine oneself and others: If something directly or indirectly benefits both oneself and others, then do it. If it benefits neither oneself nor others and is harmful, then do nothing. If it benefits oneself but harms other sentient beings, then do not do it. If it harms oneself but benefits others, then it should be combined with the specific situation. In the initial stage of practice, one should mainly protect oneself from harm. For example, just like the sprout of a medicinal tree, protecting oneself from harm is the root of benefiting sentient beings. In the stage of faith and practice, it should be like a covering. Bodhisattvas who have attained the bhumis and above should only focus on benefiting others. Furthermore, one must examine the magnitude of benefit and harm: If the benefit to sentient beings is great and the harm to oneself is small, then do the work of benefiting sentient beings. If the benefit to sentient beings is small and the harm to oneself is great, then do not do it. If the benefit and harm are equal, then it should be combined with the specific situation. In the initial stage of practice, one should mainly protect oneself from harm. In the stage of faith and practice and above, one should mainly accomplish the benefit of others. Examining the high and low of sentient beings: If something benefits lower sentient beings such as animals, but harms higher sentient beings such as humans, then do not do the work of benefiting lower sentient beings. If it benefits sentient beings such as humans, even if it harms some animals, one should do the work of benefiting humans. The same applies to ordinary people and practitioners. If they are both practitioners, the same applies to Shravakas and Bodhisattvas. Examining the number of sentient beings: If something benefits many sentient beings but harms a few, then do the work of benefiting many. If it harms many,

It is not done even if it is of little benefit. If the benefits and harms of large and small matters are equal, then rely on the wise teacher who is skilled in protecting against harm and accomplish benefits. Examining this life and the next: If it can be transformed into the benefit of both this life and the next, then do your best to accomplish the benefit of others. If it cannot be transformed into the benefit of both, then do nothing at all. If it benefits this life but harms the next, then do not do it. If it harms this life but benefits the next, then be skilled in the method of protecting against the harm of this life and accomplish the affairs of the next life. Examining vows and non-virtue: Even though one abides in the pure conduct of vows, if one's own non-virtue is practiced solely for the sake of some sentient beings, if it can be transformed into great benefit, then it is permissible to practice all ten non-virtues for the sake of others, and it is a teaching to be accomplished, so it can be done. If one sees or hears that many Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas are killed for the sake of slight wealth, and thinks of committing many deeds of uninterrupted karma, even though one is wary of the ripening result, killing that sentient being with a compassionate heart is not a fault, and one will again increase much merit. Furthermore, if a Bodhisattva with ability sees thieves and others plundering the many possessions of the Sangha and stupas, then with a compassionate heart, he should take back the possessions and return them to the Sangha and stupas in their original places. In this way, even if a Bodhisattva takes what is not given, there is no fault. Furthermore, if a householder Bodhisattva sees a woman without a household who is tormented by the lust of sexual desire, then with compassion, he should rely on the Dharma of sexual union and lead her into virtue. Furthermore, in order to save the lives of many sentient beings, or as a means of liberation from imprisonment, amputation, etc., one should speak various false words. Furthermore, for sentient beings who are controlled by non-virtuous friends and evil companions, one should speak divisive words with a compassionate heart and create separation. Furthermore, if sentient beings who have entered the wrong path and are engaging in evil conduct cannot be dissuaded with gentle words, then one should speak harsh and severe words with a compassionate heart and rebuke and degrade them. Furthermore, for sentient beings who are tormented by sorrow, or who delight in songs, dances, the sounds of musical instruments, and joking words, etc., one should perform various songs, dances, and musical instruments with a compassionate heart.
