Abridged Instructions on the Bodhisattva's Conduct. Abridged Instructions on the Bodhisattva's Conduct. The Abridged Instructions on the Bodhisattva's Conduct is complete. Abridged Bodhisattva Conduct. Om. I prostrate to all true spiritual friends and to the venerable Manjushri. Here, regarding the practice of the bodhisattvas' conduct, in general, as it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: There is nothing that the bodhisattvas do not study; there is no such thing. For the wise who abide thus, there is no merit that does not increase. Thus, the activities of the great bodhisattvas have no limit or end, are immeasurable, and are of the nature of limitless liberation. However, here, as heard from the lineage's instructions and the words of the lamas, for those who aspire to become bodhisattvas and wish to study the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior, the condensed essence of practice is threefold: the discipline of abstaining from negative actions, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. First, the discipline of abstaining from negative actions is: one must abandon the root and branch downfalls. Here, following the noble Shantideva, one must abandon the eighteen root downfalls: Images and stupas, etc., utensils and offerings are the property of the Buddha. Scriptures and writing materials, offerings, etc., and the utensils of the dharma teachers, etc., are the property of the Dharma. Bhikshus, shramaneras, upasakas, etc., four or more who commonly own utensils and offerings, etc., are the property of the Sangha. Taking even a tiny object like a needlepoint from the property of the Three Jewels without permission is called stealing the property of the Three Jewels, which is the first root downfall. Denying the authentic sutras of the Buddha's teachings, saying that this is not the Buddha's teaching, is the act of abandoning the Dharma, which is the second root downfall. Whether ordained and upholding the precepts or having broken the precepts, punishing them, imprisoning them, taking away their monastic robes, or causing them to return to lay life, etc., is the third root downfall. Committing any of the five heinous crimes is the fourth root downfall. If one develops the wrong view of not believing in cause and effect, it is the fifth root downfall.

Destroying towns and other places is the sixth root downfall. Initially, without taming one's mind with cause and effect, bodhicitta, etc., teaching the meaning of emptiness is the seventh root downfall. Abandoning the generation of perfect bodhicitta and teaching the path of the lesser vehicle of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas is the eighth root downfall. Causing those of the lineage who delight in prātimokṣa to abandon prātimokṣa is the ninth root downfall. Holding that the vehicle of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas does not have the power to completely abandon afflictions such as desire, and teaching others in this way, is the tenth root downfall. Due to the power of jealousy, praising oneself or denigrating others is the eleventh root downfall. For the sake of gain and respect, even though one has not realized the meaning of emptiness, saying, "I have realized emptiness," and speaking this false claim of superior human qualities, is the twelfth root downfall. Causing other monks to be punished, and then threatening them and taking secret provisions, etc., from them, is the thirteenth root downfall. Doing things that harm the meditation of a monk who is meditating, and diverting his gains, etc., to other directions, is the fourteenth root downfall. The mind that desires to attain the state of perfect enlightenment for the sake of others is the aspiring mind, so abandoning it is the fifteenth root downfall. Due to the motivation of desire and miserliness, not giving dharma and wealth to those who ask for them is the sixteenth root downfall. Even though another person who has enmity with oneself apologizes and confesses with words, still not abandoning anger towards them, or beating others due to anger, is the seventeenth root downfall. Due to the motivation of ignorance, pretending that what is not dharma is dharma and teaching it, is the eighteenth root downfall. Although there are eighty branch transgressions, if summarized briefly, there is nothing that is not included in taking upon oneself all methods for accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others. Secondly, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas is divided into the precepts of aspiring bodhicitta and the precepts of engaging bodhicitta. First, there are five for aspiring bodhicitta. First, in order not to lose the aspiring mind, not abandoning sentient beings means that no matter which sentient being, due to causing one's mind to be displeased, even if a time comes when one can eliminate harm to them, one does not eliminate it, and if a time comes when one can benefit them, one does not benefit them.
