Posadha. Posadha. Oh! May all sentient beings, equal to the sky, attain the state of unsurpassed, perfectly complete Buddha. For that purpose, with the supreme aspiration for enlightenment, resolving to take and keep the Mahayana Posadha, please listen. That is, keeping the precepts of the eight-branch time discipline, in the time of the Lesser Vehicle, it is called the eight-branch fast, which is what laypeople should keep at certain times. Likewise, in the Great Vehicle, if it is practiced with the mind of enlightenment, it becomes the moral discipline of restraining misconduct. Here, if it is practiced in connection with the generation stage deity yoga of the noble Avalokiteshvara, it becomes an ascetic practice and a branch of vows of the tantra of action. That is, whatever the conduct of the previous Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, that is established as a rule in one's own mind, and not transgressing it, it is called the moral discipline or vows. Therefore, how the previous ones, etc., are gradually explained a little. That is, the perfect Buddhas, having gone in accordance with the suchness of reality, are therefore called Tathagatas. Having separated from the enemies of the four maras, they are therefore called Arhats. The qualities of abandonment and realization are perfectly complete, and like awakening from the thick sleep of ignorance, intelligence expands in all knowable things, therefore they are called perfectly complete Buddhas. For example, just as the horse of a wheel-turning king, when engaging in the enemy's battlefield, etc., engages from where there is no harm, even abandoning its own life to protect the king himself. Similarly, showing all sentient beings the path of liberation and omniscience without error, and only focusing on the benefit of others, therefore like a horse. For all sentient beings equal to the sky, carrying the burden of great compassion, benefiting without being asked, and showing the meaning of the unsurpassed Great Vehicle, therefore like a great elephant. Having accomplished one's own purpose, therefore done; focusing on the benefit of others, therefore doing; abandoning the obscurations of karma and affliction, therefore abandoned; having attained the state of nirvana, therefore having attained one's own benefit; from the place of samsara, the wrong views and afflictions that do not allow liberation

Not to mention seeking the pleasure of sexual union by offering each other, not even looking at each other with lustful thoughts is the third of abstaining from improper sexual conduct. Not to mention the great lie of claiming to have superior human qualities when one does not have the qualities of the paths and grounds, one should not even tell lies to deceive others for the sake of jokes and play, this is the fourth. One of the branches of mindfulness is to abstain from alcohol. If one does not abstain from this, one's own mind will become unrestrained, and being intoxicated by alcohol, one will not know all the places of what to take and what to leave, and even forget that one has taken vows, and because one engages in non-virtuous deeds, one will not be able to keep any vows, therefore one must abstain from grain alcohol such as barley, and honey and flowers and other dipped and mixed concocted alcohol. Furthermore, one must abstain from all intoxicating foods and drinks such as fruits and roots. There are three branches of asceticism: in order to revive the memory that one is a holder of vows, one imitates the behavior of those who remain at home, and follows the good deeds of the sons of the conquerors, which is asceticism. Abandoning coquetry and adorning the body with fragrant substances such as camphor and sandalwood with the intention of beautification, adorning the body with garlands of flowers and jewels, and abandoning earrings and bracelets that are not such, these are the three types of ornaments. Abandoning moving the limbs of the body for the sake of play and laughter, and speaking various kinds of words, etc., this is playing the form of dance. Similarly, abandoning singing with intonation and raising and lowering of the voice, and playing musical instruments such as the lute and flute, these are the three types of play. Not at the proper time, that is, after noon, one should only drink water and tea, etc. to relieve thirst, but not consume foods such as roasted barley flour, fried noodles, and fruits that relieve hunger. One should not use high beds and cushions that are more than one cubit high, and large beds and cushions such as silk clothes and tiger and leopard skin cushions that are not suitable for ordinary people. The three types of play such as dance, and the three types of ornaments such as garlands, are counted as one, these are the three branches of asceticism. These eight branches should be guarded without deterioration until the sun of enlightenment rises.
