Collected Teachings of Master Tsongkhapa JTs88: Notes on the Spike of Instructions, Personally Given by Je Rinpoche Notes on the Spike of Instructions, Personally Given by Je Rinpoche Notes on the Spike of Instructions, Personally Given by Je Rinpoche From the Fifth Spike of the Spike of Instructions: 'Therefore, the four joys endowed with the nature of Bodhicitta should be elaborated,' which are joy, etc. A hero is a practitioner who strives diligently for the benefit of himself and others to cross over to the other shore, and that itself is joy. Because there is no other means of enjoying bliss apart from joy. Supreme joy, Yogini, means seeking the joy of perfect play as the goal. The characteristic of the most secret supreme joy is that it is extremely clear. 'All' means the nature of wisdom and means, because here, the thoughts of men and women are the same. The nature of supreme joy is like the union of heroes and yoginis. 'The means of its bliss' means that the means of the bliss of its extreme joy is its immediate cause. Therefore, through 'its', all the means of bliss are known. The All-Knowing One is the nature of co-emergent joy, hence the Bhagavan. Desiring to express the essence of these, it is said 'first', etc. Mere joy is not supreme, because small pleasures arise from various grasping and apprehending thoughts, such as embracing, kissing, etc., and the repeated contact of the lotus and the vajra, ultimately leading to the vajra sliding into the lotus, which is a characteristic of extreme desire for pleasure. 'Sixteen-year-old wisdom, embraced by two arms, the union of bell and vajra, is the best description of the master's empowerment.' This is said in the second chapter. Supreme joy refers to the characteristic of desiring bliss more and more, and also eliminating attachment to bliss through the supremacy of joy, enjoying with the wisdom of bliss, the grasping and apprehending thoughts become thin and unobscured. Saying 'exceeding joy' refers to enjoying the essence of pleasure in a special way, and enjoying with completely purified desire, the discernment of not being overly attached, here, enjoying through those pleasures. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is superior because it is free from the conceptual thought that perceives its nature as being attached to the happiness of the state of perfect bliss. As stated in the 'Second Examination': 'Third, for the sake of being free from desire.' Fourth, 'co-emergent' refers to: experiencing the great bliss of emptiness, the nature of one's own being, with the co-emergent joy, the nature of conventional Bodhicitta, thereby being non-conceptual. Therefore, abandoning the happiness of attachment, and abandoning the attachment that is the opposite of it. Regarding this, it is said: 'Apart from the three characteristics, completely abandon attachment and non-attachment.' Then, is this the path of seeing? It is not. It is obtaining the ground of the difference of means, and the ground of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and obtaining the ground of the blessings of the Guru, thereby becoming one's own ground. Here, it is referred to as two breaths. The great bliss wisdom and the nature of emptiness being pure, mutually enhancing, generating joy, and in the manner of Vajradhara, it will definitely manifest as the Tathagata and Vajradhara.' And, obtaining that path refers to the breath of the Tathagata, and the breath and generation of Vajradhara. As it is said: 'By the difference of means and what arises from means, the meaning of the fourth is considered as two. One is accomplished by the Tathagata, the other is considered as Vajradhara.' Then, after the co-emergent joy, should there be the joy of separation from joy? As it is said in the 'Second Examination': 'The nature of co-emergent joy, the supreme separation from joy is considered first.' It is not so. The end of supreme joy is separation from joy. Who begins first from supreme joy? After that is separation from joy, after that is co-emergent joy, which is obtained through meaning. In the beginning of the supreme separation from joy, between the supreme and separation. The meaning that is spoken is not reasonable, because separation from joy should be presented first, because it is said: 'That is abandoning the three joys.' Therefore, 'the first of separation' refers to what is said at the time of separation, 'the co-emergent should be presented first,' this is determined through reasoning. Because of the arising of co-emergent joy, conceptual thought disappears, therefore it will become more and more apparent.' And, that itself is the great yoga of the wisdom Vajra Samucchaya. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
