The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Requested by the Tigress The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Requested by the Tigress ༄༅། །The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Requested by the Tigress is recorded. In Indian language: Ārya Suvabuvarmigi-nāma-sūtra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Great Vehicle, called "Requested by the Noble Tigress." Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the great charnel ground forest called Tigress Grove, together with a great assembly of monks consisting of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, and a great many Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. At that time, the Blessed One spoke thus to the tigresses dwelling in the thorny tiger forest: Tigresses, listen! Do you see beings abiding in patience? Do you see beings abiding in love? Have you attained samadhi? Are you abiding in mindfulness? Are you without arrogance? After speaking thus, the tigresses said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, from where does birth come? From where does aging come? From where does sickness come, and where does it go? From where does the eye come? From where does form come? From where does feeling come? From where does perception come? From where does formation come? From where does consciousness come? The Blessed One replied: Birth does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Aging does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Death does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. The eye does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Form does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Feeling does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Perception does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Formation does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. Consciousness does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, for the sake of benefiting others, with a body that is immaculate, virtues that are exceedingly vast like the ocean, wisdom that shines forth in the heavenly realms and is unobstructed, the Blessed One, who subdues others with power, was surrounded by one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, and having traveled through the realm of the five aggregates, went to a certain forest.

Behold these lands adorned with various fragrant scents. Having beheld them, the Blessed One spoke thus to the venerable Ananda: 'This land is exceedingly beautiful and fills the mind with joy; spread out a seat for the Thus-Gone-One.' Then, according to the Blessed One's command, a seat was spread. Having spread the seat, they then entreated the Blessed One thus: 'The seat has been spread. Blessed One, supreme lord! Bestow upon beings the supreme, liberate the holy ones from the bonds of existence. Please reside here to benefit beings and lead them to liberation. We request you to speak words of nectar.' Then, the Blessed One sat upon that seat and addressed the monks: 'Monks, I shall speak of the essence of the holy ones who perform deeds, the essence of sentient beings, which is patience, diligence, wisdom, and immeasurable qualities.' Then, the Blessed One pressed the ground with the soles of his feet, which bore the marks of a thousand-spoked wheel, as soft as a newly opened lotus flower, and this earth shook in six ways. It shook universally. It shook exceedingly. There was thunder and lightning. Rain fell heavily. Likewise, light radiated intensely, and within a covering of nets of jewels, gold, turquoise, and pearls, there was a golden zamatog (Tibetan: ornament, treasure chest). At the door of that ornament, there was an aged tigress, with long eyebrows, whiskers, and mane, teeth and claws white and long, tongue and gums red, mouth open and fangs bared, radiating rainbows and light, whiskers twitching, stripes and spots distinct, tail curled up to her back, her right flank resting on the ground, stretched out, smiling slightly, and she entreated the Blessed One thus: 'Blessed One, what kind of zamatog (Tibetan: ornament, treasure chest) is this? What is it?' Having entreated thus, the Blessed One spoke thus to that tigress: 'Tigress, this zamatog (Tibetan: ornament, treasure chest) is the body of the Thus-Gone-One. Therefore, it should be understood in an unmanifest way. It should be understood in a supreme way. It should be understood in a meaningful way. It should be understood in a correct way. It should be understood in an unerring way. It should be understood in an abundant way. It should be understood in an unsurpassed way. It should be understood in a complete way.' Having spoken thus, the Blessed One, the tigress again entreated the Blessed One thus.
